Onstage, Grey delivers his songs with compassion and a relentless honesty, but perhaps not until Ol’ Glory has a studio record captured the fierceness and intimacy that defines a Grey live performance. “I wanted that crucial lived-in feel,” Grey says of Ol’ Glory, and here he hits his mark. On the new album, Grey and his current Mofro lineup offer grace and groove in equal measure, with an easygoing quality to the production that makes those beautiful muscular drum-breaks sound as though the band has set up in your living room.

By God I’m a tough, hardened, stuck in my ways kind of man and I’ll admit it that this version of this song has me in tears every time I watch it. I lost my Grandpa unexpectedly during a heart surgery in 2006 and he was The Man I looked up to and aspired to be like. And I start to think about my tough old grandmother living all these years without my grandpa after 50 years of being together and seeing how tough she is and how she picked herself up by her bootstraps and trudged on. It’s inspiring, man!! And when I see JJ break down crying during the outro and knowing that this song is about a conversation between his grandfather and his grandmother and knowing how much he meant to JJ, man it just tears me up and reaches down and tears a chunk out of this old battle hardened heart of mine. I saw someone's post about JJ being better live and I thought that was a bold statement. Well I just saw him at Knuckleheads in KC MO last night and that comment was right on. Do your self a favor and if he comes anywhere near you GO SEE HIM! I loved the way he interacted with his band and his songs SLOW and SWEATYYYY and Seminole Wind. He is the MAN!

my my...can't remember the last time a song brought a tear...i believe it was amazing grace. This man has heart and soul...not afraid to show some real emotion. My first night listening to him and watching his video's. All I can say is genuine, you can feel the love. This world needs more of this...much more! God bless.

@@jmcd1974able I don’t think JJ is interested in being on the radio. He’s doing just fine without it and he still has total control over his music and his career. He’s done it his way and it’s paid off. Radio and mainstream steals musicians souls.

I've been a musician since 1977 when I was taught the Blues by a Shipmate in the US Navy while stationed at the Naval Air Station Keflavik Iceland. The first time I heard this song by JJ and Mofro It just pegged me. Need to learn how to play this song. Great song JJ.. awesome work brother!

This is artistry of this song is truly remarkable. The whole song walks us through getting to the end of our lives and being able to reflect on how we spent that life. Then, at 7:00, JJ's guitar solo represents the dying process: soft, gentle, and soothing. Then, at 7:48, the trumpets begin to softly play as his grandfather (or anyone) goes through Heaven's gates. Finally, at 8:10, his grandfather had entered through the gates and was rejoicing in Heaven. Watch JJ's face during each of those sections. You can see his pain through the death phase, then see him begin to feel at peace as the trumpets sound. Yes, JJ Grey is a remarkable musician. Yes, he is an amazing vocalist. Yes, his band is remarkably talented. But, the combination of all that talent plus the artistry and coordination of so many different concepts shows TRUE musical genius. There are very few artists on JJ's level, and I am honored to have been able to see him live. I sat in the front row and wept the entire time he sang this. And, I mean wept. His trumpet player saw me crying and during a brief intercession, he came to check on me. "Are you okay?" I smiled and nodded. He hugged me after the show as well. Amazing people.
