Most people never know what theyre watching. They all think they can do it because the guys doing it makes it look easy. I'm a boxing trainer & I get guys getting out of the military at age 27-30 say to me that they want to become a professional boxer. After one training session, they say, "Man. I had no clue of all the things you have to do & think about just to throw a punch & the kind of shape you have to be in to do it for 30 seconds." They change their minds about trying to become a pro boxer that same day. When people ask, "How long do you think it'll take before you think I'll be ready to spar or fight?" I say, 3-6 months before you spar seriously & 1 year before taking a fight, to try to win. If you don't care about whether you win or lose, you can fight within 3 months." The guys who stick around realize that I wasn't kidding.

I agree with JJ; Amin is wrong. I think a lot of people want real basketball analysis and get frustrated by how ESPN covers basketball. However, there is a difference between educating people & thinking people are stupid because they aren't as educated on the subject, and it sounds like Amin's problem is he thinks the latter -- why else would he call the fans of the sport "stupid" just for failing to understand the sort of action an NBA team is running? I think people would welcome being educated on basically & better basketball analysis, but you don't have to insult them to do that.

Amin is wrong? Name one successful podcast/show that breaks down plays and coaching decisions!
@Steven-lg3zk
@Steven-lg3zk 5 ай бұрын
It is going to depend on what you mean by "successful"@@DrPhill96. If by "successful" you mean some show on ESPN or FS1, then that show simply doesn't exist -- and that seems to be part of the criticism. However, you might think that shows like BBallBreakDown, Coach Daniel, the Lakers Film Room, or Thinking Basketball are all shows/podcasts that have been "successful," and at least show there is a market for this sort of coverage -- independently of whether you like any of those particular shows/podcasts. However, as Amin rightly points out, there is a difference in how the NFL & the NBA are covered on ESPN. There is no NFL Live equivalent on ESPN (NBA Today doesn't break down film the way NFL Live does). You occasionally get glimpses of this from Tim Legler or Chiney Ogwumike, but much of the coverage is "such-and-such play just isn't a winner; he just doesn't want it." I would imagine part of the reason for this is because they have reporters & ex-football players discussing basketball more often than having ex-basketball players/coaches discussing basketball -- in addition to either some preconceived notion that fans don't want better basketball coverage or from decisions made by the executives that they shouldn't focus on this sort of coverage.
@Steven-lg3zk

Basketball analytics isn't really that interesting is the real problem. Basketball is the most talent dependent team sport. It's rare in the history of basketball that you just can out scheme a more talented team and win consistently. The last "under-talented" team to win consistently was the Pistons of the 00s.
@shotarokaneda7525
@shotarokaneda7525 5 ай бұрын
People think they understand basketball. Then have takes like this. Basketball is more talent dependent because there's far fewer players. There are still plays and infact recovery plays that lead into another play because of how far more fluid the game is. It is the type of talking point that American viewers say about world football...you do not understand what you are looking at and simplify it.
@MalikEKC
@MalikEKC 5 ай бұрын
@shotarokaneda7525 I never said there weren't plays. I said they weren't interesting because of how talent dependent basketball is. If you're facing a superior team you're going to lose regardless of your tactics. It's why the Pistons have consistently been terrible. They have no talent

Your opinion about JJ Redick being the smartest of anyone on ESPN about basketball is very questionable if you're consciously putting him ahead of Tim Legler. I think Legler is a better analyst and commentator on NBA. But Redick certainly has some positive traits. I think you're grossly overstating Redick's uniqueness or the strength of his "brand". Pump the brakes and try to put this in more perspective. Redick is not the shining star in the galaxy.

Jj has a lot of stugotz in him, I just saw the clip of him saying that fans don't wanna be educated because his video about zion being a primary ballhandler "only" got 54k views. Like when did the viewership on his videos become the barometer of what nba fans want? There's multiple channels who breakdown basketball in a way that is more entertaining and educational than i've ever seen jj do who consistently get hundreds of thousands of views on their videos.

@@reasedogable thinking basketball, kenny for real, bballbreakdown, rusty buckets. I don't understand why jj thinks his analysis is the center of the universe when it comes to basketball when the popularity of his channel largely comes from his interviews with nba players and his proximity to them and the league as a former player and when he's probably not even the 2nd best basketball analyst at espn.

The dan le batard show needs to learn how to edit their clips . Who's in charge of editing? Is frustrating how I see the title of the video , I'm hooked , I play it . The video is 10 minutes long , while I'm listening to the podcast , I find out they talk about the subject I'm interested in for about 6 minutes and the rest of the video is about some random stuff.

J.J. started his post basketball playing career the way he did because he wants to stay in the business, while being at home raising his young children. Once they are in high school, he's going to become either a coach or he'll be a fulltime analyst.

Joe Rogan got 500 million in within 5 years. Howard Stern got a billion for his show (not all his money but still got two 500 million dollar deals for his show) so why couldn't JJ get 1/5 of Rogan over the next 20 years?

JJ’s looking to improve his brand. He’s purposefully saying crazy things for clicks, likes, and subscribes to his shows. He knows people are going to come at him when he says certain things. Now he’s made it a point to do that. None of his well know points have been particularly insightful or original; just highly opinionated. So he’s probably more popular now than he was as a player. And that’s what he wants. That get’s him paid in a more competitive podcast market now.

I can’t stand grown adults that complain about the world being unfair. That’s something we all learn as kids. It is what it is. JJ is great at what he does, but you joined the sports media world knowing how this works. While he was right with what he’s saying, it just is what it is. That’s how life works bruh. So either conform to what’s successful or keep doin what you want to do regardless of views. Get with it or get lost, simple.
