Point Forward (with Andre Iguodala & Evan Turner)

THE Jonathan Clay Redick joins us this week on Point Forward. Even while retired from the game, JJ Redick still continues to be one of the most prominent voices on the hardwood and in media as he was one of the first athletes to build his own platform that is still so beloved to this day. A true father and coach, JJ hands out gem after gem on the story of his success and what’s next.
And just before we talk game, we had to step back and take a look at the Detroit Pistons approaching a new historic record as they continue to inch closer to one of the longest losing streaks in NBA history. Is this the most bizarre streak the guys have witnessed? And wait - but this ain’t a tank though?!
Tune in for the latest hoops insights and engaging sports talk with your hosts, former NBA teammates and lifelong friends, Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner.

I don't know what a foul is. The offense has the advantage. The defender can be in great position...did everything correctly such as: staying vertical, don't reach, stay in front of offensive player, and still get called for the foul when the offensive player initiated the contact.

I wouldn't mind seeing JJ get a chance at coaching a team but I'd selfishly miss him in the space he is currently in. The same thing goes for missing the opportunity to get to see the completely candid Andre Iguodala. Definitely understand some responsibilities require a specific demeanor and caution. Evan is just all around solid with bringing realness, being able to lighten the mood, and asking things fans would want to know.

I used to be a soccer referee when i was 18/19. In my opinion a referees job is to be a robot/cyborg and correctly enforce rules of the game with zero emotional ties. Then after implementing the robot part you hsve to be sble to communicate well and clearly with players to manage the game properly. It is extremely difficult and refs genuinely miss calls. I think a problem for NBA is that previous players aren't refs. If previous players reffed they'd be way more understanding and not handing out techs. I think players have responsibilities to stop flopping and complaining so much as well especially on youth levels

For the fan, the annoyance is spending the first 5 minutes of a game to see what will or won't be called. Then see that subjective standard violated. We watch someone get a small bump and the foul is called. Thirty seconds later the other team executes the same scenario and gets bumped with no call. That inconsistency kills the fans willingness to participate. To "fix" the league, the rules need to be taken back to the old ways: 1) Traveling is traveling (no gathers, no three-step spin moves, no double step back, no sliding your feet) 2) Carrying is carrying (so many carry the ball on every dribble) 3) Charging into the defender is not a blocking foul (enable defense, call the foul on the initiator) 4) If the post player can dislodge the defender, the defender can dislodge the post player (equal the playing field, aka Shaq rule) 5) No preference or seniority (all players are the same and call what's there) These five officiating changes will restore 25% of the basketball audience.

Iggy what do you think the logic is behind not starting Moody? I love PD and his impact but isn't it strange Moody has been consistent for a few years now with limited mistakes and steadily getting better to still be fighting for minutes? Again this is no knock on podz but I feel like Kerr was quick to throw him out there in the starting line up as a rookie but has been very hesitant to get Moody and Kuminga off the leash. I see him trusting Kuminga more but just want an idea of what more Moody has to do to show his coach he's ready.

Would be interesting if there would be a third arbitrator...like ai... to aid referees in calls...fouls are a harder one to call but for travels, out of bounds etc.. obvious violations that go uncalled and can affect game. Also the way rules are set up that any ref can call a tech for feeling offended is worded poorly. If they have this power then there should be more than 2 techs to an ejection.

Note to AI: kindergarten teachers don't get paid $30k. I'm in SoCal, so it's high here, but around here kindergarten teachers and other elementary teachers get the same pay, which is more like $70k, depending on district of course _(and there's a lot of variance between districts)._ Not to say that teachers are paid too much, by any means, but they're not starving like they would be on $30k. Edit: I should say that I'm talking about averages here. There apparently _are_ some districts in which elementary teachers _do_ get under 40k, so my bad there. I didn't think that was still the case, but I guess AI might have something with his random estimate.
@jgray2718

The thing I want to see for refs is specific plays. "On this play the defensive player was moving, so even though the offensive player initiated the contact by lowering his shoulder directly into the defender's chest, the blocking call was correct." Something like that. You get the absolute most ticky-tack fouls on one trip and the exact same play with way more contact not called on the next. There just doesn't seem to be much consistency, except for the heavy *_heavy_* favoritism for the offense. It's not even specific teams or specific players so much as it is that the NBA has essentially legislated defense out of the game in favor of a parade to the free throw line, and it's also very hard to tell what gets called a foul and what doesn't. Also the techs are getting awfully quick.

@pointforward The Denver game was a fun one. Wigs got a little predatory. Only missed one free throw. TJD was a deterrent and a problem. JK's dunk on Murray signaled the pendulum swing back in the Dubs direction. BP was dynamic. 3P's shot is back. Now here are real issues. Steph was irritated by Joker's antics; the human tank getting knocked around by toy race cars. Laughable. But Steph loves to kick his leg out on jumpers to trick the refs into calls. That is one of several reasons to toss those activities in the garbage bin. He also let the calls or lack get to him. Victim mode. He almost went masterful, but went down a different path. Klay started fantastic but then his whole game slid. 2 shots blocked by Porter. Fell off on the ruggedness. Was trying to have a big Christmas game. Kind of like him trying to live up to game 6 Klay. Big moments have to come organically. The turning point was the rushed 3 balls to start the 4th. Way to quick. Saric was rushing all night but the 4th looked like guys were trying to deliver knock-out blows in a one point game with 10 minutes left. Turned control back over to the Nugs. What's the big hurry. Had gone surgical after the first quarter then gave it all away. Of course the calls seemed bad. They were not bad. They were expected. Can't have the Dubs smashing Denver AGAIN. Harder to sell the next game. But it exposes things. Travels (Steph travels a lot. Klay not as much but does and did), defensive 3 seconds when shooters are about to drain (not Dubs fault. refs work hard to get Steph off his rhythm. Nobody loses more looks that way), moving screens and flops for and against. Steph has created monsters all over the league. I said before that Murray is to Steph what Kobe was to MJ. But, Murray is bigger, faster, jumps higher, has longer arms and even has a few shots mastered that Steph doesn't even take. Not yet ready to concede stronger. Coach Calipari said years ago that Murray would be better than Booker and some thought he was nuts. Steph, though, is the master still, when he decides to be. When Jordan faced Kobe, MJ sized him up, hit him with several tests, graded them, then put them in his back pocket. He never went kill-mode on Kobe. Kobe thought he surpassed MJ but never did. Kobe was a relentless genius but never got close to the masterful craftiness of MJ. Murray is different. He doesn't fool himself. He only borrows from Steph's killer side but doesn't try to copy him. Steph has to go into Yoda mode, which he did several times, when going against Murray. Can't turn it over or get discouraged about calls. Gotta have that twinkle in the eye and SHOW the young brother the depths of it. JK can show him the physical gifts. Just another cautionary point about BP. The media are all over him because he talks. For me it was hilarious to see BP bungle trying to be slippery at halftime. He's getting better. If I was trying to be tricky, I would send Wigs and JK out there. You get NOTHING! Sometimes when they get too invasive, JK hits them with the "no Ingles". BP is getting better with the press and is playing like a 10 yr veteran, at least yesterday. Can't wait to see him go head to head with the Big Ragu Divincenzo. That will be bigger than Steph vs JP. All in all it was a WOW type game as far as the Dubs versatility. They didn't know what to do with TJD. Moody got lost in the mix. Moody might turn it up a notch on defense and work on ball handling some more. Looking good. Love Loon's new hair style! More power! Go Dubs!

JJ...you make reasonabe statements but there are statements I question.When you define top 5 three-point shooter...what is your exact criteria because different eras have certain volume of three-point shooting. For example, in the 80s, they didn't shoot as many threes as today's NBA, so you can't summate that Bird isn't top 5 three-point shooter due to his three-point shooting volume in comparison to today's game.

Can't wait for the major sports leagues replace refs with AI. Those old guys can keep their jobs but they'll just be there to give the players the ball on free throws and work from the center in New Jersey. This will happen sooner than people are thinking, technology is probably already able to do a better job and keep personal feelings out of decision.
