Why did Guru Sahib create Khalsa?
Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, created the Khalsa in 1699. There are a few key reasons for this:
Defense against persecution: The Mughal Empire, then ruled by Aurangzeb, was enforcing Islamic rule. Guru Gobind Singh's father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, was even martyred for defending Hindus. The Khalsa were created to be protectors of the innocent from religious oppression.
Equality and Unity: The Khalsa represented a rejection of social hierarchies and a focus on equality among Sikhs. It replaced a previous system with appointed leaders.
Commitment to the faith: The Khalsa initiation ceremony created a dedicated community following a strict code of conduct.
