Hi everyone, and welcome back to JJsays! For anyone that knows anything about me at all... the FIRST thing I might tell you about my language learning journey is that speaking to people makes me really nervous... I mean, really, really nervous...! PARTICULARLY when I'm filming it! That being said, I think it's important to get out of my comfort zone in order to inspire other language learners! Wish me luck! 🤞

I like that JJsays can speak Chinese well and is so well-versed in Chinese culture. I hope people see it as a beautiful thing when Asian people speak English. When Asian people speak English, they’re mocked for their accent. When Caucasians speak an Asian language, it’s such a monumental event.
@hangtuah888
@hangtuah888 4 жыл бұрын
It so true as I too used to find it but now I do not as I am an attorney and also hockey coach so from the standpoint of being the one delivering the knowledge, I do not get mocked now plus somehow I have got to the stage where I speak like a local. But it is true they mocked your speech to cause a feeling of insecurity. Have no fear and just plough on.

This is interesting actually. JJ CHOSE to learn Chinese and is so into Chinese culture to the point where she can be considered an egg. It's all her choice but Chinese Americans on the other hand, who are typically called bananas or Twinkies must learn English well in order to survive here and fit in basically. Many ABC's(myself included) have always strived to be treated the same as our white counterparts so we have gone through phases of refusing to speak our native language in public or throwing our lunches our parents packed for us in order to avoid being ostracized. I feel like a part of the reason why so many ABC's are not fluent in Chinese is due to the very reason that they fear bring ridiculed for not speaking accentless English and not being able to assimilate in predominantly white communities such as their schools. This type of behavior will continue as long as the media continues to perpetuate various minority stereotypes by casting minorities as the token character of their race, which is the underdog more often than not.

Friend, If youre going to nearly stick your head all the way through the ordering window, speak directly to people at such short range, and walk around in public, at least have the courtesy to wear your mask. It's absolutely possible to speak and be heard with your mask on. If you insist that people need to see your mouth when you speak then perhaps wear a face shield instead. Don't be risking yourself and others for a video.

Between 2 languages, there are hopefully the 4 relations 1) Word order, meanings etc are the same--- only the words are different. 2) Word order, meanings etc are similar 3) Word order, etc are opposite 4) Word order, etc. are just different, including sometimes 1 language simply does not speak or write on a topic. If you focus more on 3) and 4), 1) and 2) should be easier. Chinese basic word order is like English, but not all. There are NO !!! verb conjugations !!! Verb modes use modal auxiliary verbs and adverbs, like English (plus some particles) However, there are (only) 4 tones. There are the pictorial ideograph characters (but a relatively small?? no. are commonly used, but repeat in many words. Textbook conversation needs tone replaced by instructional videos that explain real current speech--- fortunately, many exist on internet On line teachers and conversers, are on italki.com and etc??? I wish I had the intellect to learn a language that fluently. I am learning German now and individual words aren't difficult, but putting together sentence after sentence seems an impossible task.
@xaviermt1
@xaviermt1 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is a matter of intellect. I think it is more about putting in a substantial amount of effort, and continually exposing yourself to full sentences (spoken and written) in your target language that are 80-100% understandable to you. I have generally been very successful in 'intellectual' pursuits like philosophy, math, programming etc, but I find languages one of the hardest things to master. So I would encourage you not to be limited by (potentially wrong!) beliefs about your own intellect, or its role in language acquisition. Every idiot can speak his native tongue fluently! I am slowly acquiring Mandarin, but it is an absolute grind - hours per day over several years. That is just the nature of language acquisition. So don't feel like you can't learn a second language - you are no doubt sufficiently intellectually endowed. Instead accept that it will be a journey over several years, requiring significant, consistent effort (just like learning your first language was from the age of 2 to 12), and decide whether you want it badly enough.

@@c1arkj so, you still believe everything your government or social media say? I'm Russian, and I come across the same thing over and over again: people are careless, they remain blindfolded denying anything, whereas the situation is so much worse than they make you think. How do I know? Because I work in a medical field, to be more specific - in the biggest Covid 19 hospital in my area, in fact, my whole family are doctors, and...we're exhausted. We've never seen this before, the beds in hospitals are not enough, the number of patients increases daily, and many of them are in such heavy condition, you can't even imagine! The first time when we started to work with Covid 19 positives was in March, and during this while period of time it was ok, just manageable. But what we see now...is totally different. People are dying in dozens every day, and this is no joke! Please, don't believe what government says. Talk to the doctors who work with Covid 19, they will tell you the truth. Take care!

@@aishas2974 If you had a Chinese person speaking English like this "I woulda likea a flied lice prease", would you say that this persons English was good? There is this weird thing that just because its "Chinese" everyone becomes extremely lenient because "CHINESE" is such a mystical and magical and difficult language so of course we cant expect anyone to speak it really good and we will praise anyone that speaks it just so so. No one has ever told me that my English is good and I understand that because my English does not sound like native speaker. So why does everyone tell foreigners speaking Chinese that their Chinese is so good? If you heard a Chinese person speak Chinese like she does you would think they never went to school or had a speech impairment. Her Chinese is not bad for foreigner but its far from good.
