Hey Jj the trucker, I drained the tanks but the blue color gauge on the air dash never seems to go down, just the white one?

The next step that I would suggest is to do an air brake test. The same kind as in the pre-trip. Turn the engine off and the key to the on position and keep pressing on the brake pedal until all of the air has been drained and the warning lights come on. Does the needle go down to 0 or near zero when you do that? If it doesn't then there is an issue with the gauge itself. If it does go down to zero then I'm not really sure why it wouldn't go down to zero after draining the tank.

It's 20 grand not 2. Because it gets into the motor as well. I saw that the other day and couldn't believe the amount of damage. The truck was really old and the mechanic who worked at frgtlinr for 20 years now has his own shop told me it was a common problem because the drivers are not aware of the extent of damage. It goes further than the air line.

I'll be hauling Refer starting on Monday. The company I was with just layed off a bunch of drivers and terminated my lease. Luckily I own my truck, so I'm leasing on with another company to haul refer for now. I'm not looking forward to being gone all the time, but gotta do something. I've been local for about ten years now, so I almost don't even remember what it's like on the road! 😂 The longest I've stayed out in ten years is maybe 3 weeks. And the only time I've ever done Refer was in Iraq and it was pretty much a home made refer in a conex, so it'll be interesting... They are overnighting me a Qualcomm, truck decals and fuel card and stuff so I can get my truck ready for work on Monday. Need to go ahead and get my oil changed before I head out, too.

Just got a new 93.5 inch catwalk, and new airlines, brake lights, I changed out the utility lights for brake lights, too, and got some really bright work lights that I mounted on the bar that the airlines hang from. Also got some nice mudflaps. So my truck is looking pretty good now! 😁 And, of course, I have a 32" TV, fridge and microwave, so I'm definitely ready to go... One thing that I love is I put an Android Auto radio in the dash, so I have 8" of Google maps and Pandora and podcasts and all my apps right on the dash. Highly recommend!!!

@jpierce1987
@jpierce1987 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, when you pay off your truck, you should definitely get an Android Auto unit! Or if they'll let you do it now. It's perfect! Obviously you can't always trust Google Maps, but its so nice to have traffic updates and rerouting and a map to look at on the fly. Plus, it tells you what the posted speed limit it, which is very helpful. Of course, the day I paid it off, I set it to the max speed, which for Freightliner is 94MPH.

Another thing that makes a big difference on the interval, is pulling the same trailer all the time OR dropping and hooking constantly.
@simranpunia2069
@simranpunia2069 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, n The most important thing to keep in mind is when you start this (all air tanks drain or empty) process, your truck must be in neutral mode because if your truck is not neutral n you drain all of the (gear) air, n your all air tanks empty, n you start the engine, but the truck will not go into neutral because it is in gear and not start, n you will get air into the tank again.
@JJtheTrucker
@JJtheTrucker 6 ай бұрын
Interesting. I hadn't thought about that. I know that if I'm in gear and I set my brakes, my truck automatically goes into neutral but maybe not all trucks do. Good info

Not to be a SMART A, But as you said you don't want Water in the Air System at all, I worked as a Journeyman Diesel Tech for Many Years, and this is my take, Even with the Best Air Dryers and Maintenance New Truck or Old its not Just water in there, you have other Contamination such as Oil and Dirt! My Recommendation is a Quick pull every Day on the Pre Trip , tractor and Trailer, then the Complete Job like you show once a Week, (great Job by the way, because this is the Most overlooked Maintenance) Also I can tell you this not being Done can Cost you WAY more than Money, having a Failure in the Air Brakes is A Life Changing possibility, Again this Schedule is my Recommended thoughts. The Drier it is in the Tanks the Better because there will be Lubrication and moisture as soon as the Truck is Started !!! The Health of the Control Valves and Such is Vital to preventing Future air Leaks and Proper operation of the Brakes and all the other systems! Thats All dont mean to Ramble on and thank you for Bringing this Most Overlooked Topic up!!

Newer trucks have air drier installed ...thats that black canister by the radiator core under the hood also acts as an air pressure regulator..
@wecameasramens1758
@wecameasramens1758 4 жыл бұрын
Air dryer’s purpose is to prevent excessive moisture from entering sensitive parts of the air system such as the compressor, but does not remove all moisture from the air. It is still crucial for air tanks to be properly drained daily even on brand new trucks.

Do automatic trucks have clutch air tanks!
@JJtheTrucker
@JJtheTrucker 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. They're not really automatics (like cars). They're automated manual transmissions. Just no clutch pedal or human leg lol. The computer decides when to shift and engages a pneumatic clutch and shifts gears for you. There is a manual mode if you want or need to take over for the computer.

If you have a new truck with an air dryer built in, then maybe once per month in the summer and less during the winter. If it's an older truck, it technically should be done every day, but if you don't see any fluid coming out, then maybe weekly. To completely drain, takes a couple of minutes. At the very least, go for 30 seconds if no fluid is coming out.

Does this cause moisture to get into the brake pressure sensor . The stop lights turn on and cuts off the cruise control. Then you have to stomp on the brake pedal so the stop lights to turn off .

Do you drain tank with engine off or on ?
@JJtheTrucker
@JJtheTrucker 9 ай бұрын
If you want to drain them completely, you have to do it with the engine off or else the compressor will keep filling it up. If you just want to do a quick 10-second pull to get the moisture out and you're doing it regularly then it's okay if the engine is on.

Well, depends on what you consider "too hard". Using the bungee shouldn't be too hard though. But if you feel it's too tight, get a 1" longer bungee.

@JJtheTrucker

No, that's when you really need to do it. Drain that moisture out. You will want to replace your dryer filter if your truck has one, and it would be a good idea to drain and dry out the lines from compressor to brake chambers.
