9/18/23 update!
Hey everyone, an easy way to support my channel is to shop at Sweetwater using this link: sweetwater.sjv...
Thank you !
6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for KZfaq. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free KZfaq Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on KZfaq.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
Every guitar player struggles with chord changes early on. It's the only thing keeping your playing sounding like the REAL thing, right? This video identifies the most common habits that are holding you back. You can conquer chords !!

Jonathan I recently found your channel as I surfed through all the channels on playing guitar. I'm 73 years old (almost, next month) and had started learning to play as a teenager. I gave up guitar for girls and never picked up the guitar except on occasion. For Christmas my family bought me a new guitar that fit me. I've always had guitars in my house but had problems. My previous problem was the necks were all too small for my big hands, still somewhat of a problem but not like before. Of all the channels I've watched your's has been the most informative, you're easy to learn from and explain things real well. Thanks for starting this channel and all the best for in in 24.

Great video. I've been playing C,G and D chords in progression, one strum each, over and over and over and over and over again, whilst watching episodes of the US Office (20 mins per episode) to keep my mind slightly occupied! I've nailed G and D, still getting used to C!

I'm self taught and have been playing guitar longer than this man has been alive. :D Which means I've picked up LOTS of bad habits like playing a G as: 2-1-O-O-O-3 instead of 3-2-O-O-O-4. The former, means that making the change from C to G requires a fairly big shift in finger positions. The latter, which Jonathan shows here, is ultimately the best way since it requires the least amount of finger-switching. This "minimal finger movement" philosophy is one I've seen taught by many, many guitar teachers. Someday I'll get that through my little flea brain. Thanks for posting this video.

Jonathan, the video is from 2013 but it looks like you are still paying attention and responding. I found the instruction very good. For a 28 minute instructional video, you stay on poin and don't ramble and wander aimlessly. I am new to guitar, about 9 months in. I practice a lot, especially chord and chord changes. Sometimes I think I've got it figured out, then sometimes it slips away! I had some instruction but because of the quarantine and staying in, I am just running through a lot of self practice. Here is the issue I am having. You eluded to it at about the 16:00 mark of this video. It has to do with thumb placement and trying to avoid contact with other strings. The suggestion is to move the thumb to the middle of the neck and let the hand curl around the bottom of the neck. This accomplishes space between hand and bottom of the neck thus preventing the bottom of the hand from contacting the bottom string. All fine and well. But in doing this, the left hand is not really supporting or holding the neck - the neck is free floating. So here's what happens, even when I try to practice chord changes slowly: I'm playing the chord, the guitar is basically being supported by thumb and fingers that are playing the chord: I'm holding the guitar neck between thumb and fingers. Well, when I change chords, the neck sometimes moves just because the right arm is strumming. When I release the chord, the neck moves and in order to get it into position, I grab the neck from the bottom with my left hand muting the bottom string and wasting a lot of movement. What happens often is I'll ever so gently pull the neck towards me to play the chord then when I release, the neck pops away, outward and there's no way to pull it back in easily. I'm sure that the mechanics I've just describe should not be happening when I use this 'invisible' thumb method. The concept of minimizing finger motion when changing chords makes perfect sense. But even when I work on reducing finger motion, as long as I'm not supporting the guitar from the bottom, when I release a chord to change to the next, the neck floats and can move and I end up touching strings while I chase the neck. What am I doing wrong here? So a follow up video and/or explanation what's wrong here and how to fix it would be great. In other words - how to change chords using the invisible thumb method would be great! Thank you.

I don't know if this will help, David, but I hold the guitar tightly against my ribs with my strumming arm whenever I need to stabilize it. Thanks soooo much for this. I had a 3/4 acoustic guitar as a child but I never bothered with lessons or videos in the past, I used an old book. Soon got bored. Recently bought a Crafter guitar on Amazon UK (it was a steal, crazy cheap for such quality) with the intention of getting some proper lessons. But wow this vid is a revelation. You made things clear and understandable. My main problem is toughening up my very soft tiny finger tips (oh man they get sore) and using my pinky, but I'm slowly getting there! I'm trying to practice for at least 20mins every day. Your vids are gonna be a huge help!

Hey! You are the GREATEST! Thank you so much for taking the time to post these videos! I started taking lessons about two years ago ... no, make that five! Wow...time does fly! Anyway, during that time, I was at the grocery store and slipped on a shopping list that somebody had dropped and before I knew it I was on my hands and knees facing the opposite direction! At one point during that nice little flip I heard my neck pop! Well, the gist of this tale is that now I have some serious spinal damage that is taking a toll on my hands ~ and whatever it is, the numerous doctors have not quite figured it out. So, for the past year and a half I couldn't even handle touching water! The good new? I've found a new doctor...yeah me! and....even better ....YEAH YOU~~~I picked up my guitar yesterday for the first time since Nov. 2014 ~~~ found your videos on KZfaq and played around for about six minutes then had to give in due to the pain!So, not only will I donate I'll also KNIT YOU A BRIGHT BLUE CAPE cause my friend, YOU ARE MY HERO!!!! so...now for some bad news? I do not knit...I do make jewelry...alas, no knitting. You are safe. No BRIGHT BLUE CAPE in your future friend. ... ;0)Peaceout!TeriUrban Muse, LLC

This video is awesome! Your experience with teaching really shines through. Very easy to follow and understand and not dry at all. This video is perfect for exactly where i am in my journey of learning the guitar. I had an electric for a few years and basically only got as far as learning most of the open chords, some power chords (Black sabbath type stuff: Sweet Leaf, Iron Man etc), a pentatonic scale and diatonic scales (of which I only remember 1 diatonic). I recently sold the electric which I hardly ever touched anymore and picked up an acoustic which I was itching for. Since then my practicing has gone way up again but i was hitting a wall. I was trying to learn by learning snippits of songs but that seemed to be slow learning and kind of hard just looking at tabs. I'd practice trying to learn the song for about 10min then get frustrated because it seemed harder than it should be, so i'd want to practice some other aspect of the guitar but i didn't really know how or what I should try to practice/learn next. After watching this video i'm seeing things much more clearly. No wonder learning the songs was slow going, although I knew some of the chords my chord changing wasn't developped at all. I was totally removing my fingers in between chord changes (worst case scenerio), and I hadn't been practicing that repetition to commit the chords/changes to memory. Gotta take things back to basics! You totally just knocked down that wall I ran into and provided me with many hours practicing potential! Thank you for that! Great video, great teacher. I've watched many of your other videos as well and made tons of notes and now have months of guided practice ahead of me instead of staring at a brick wall! I also bookmarked the new website coming soon, subscribed to this channel, followed on Facebook and instagram. (Also told some of my friends about jkehew1 here on you tube) Thanks!!

Great advice! I'd like to add something about the A chord. If you have large fingers like I have you can use one finger on the 2nd and 3rd string and it makes the same sound. I tried and tried to get my fingers lined up using 3 but i just didnt have the room.

I want to learn guitar, Haven't bought one yet. My question is , I'm left handed . Should I stay with a left handed guitar or try a right handed? I feel staying left handed would be more natural, but all the experts say if your beginning go with a right handed one. I'm just wondering if a right handed player tried playing left handed and learned how unnatural it is to use your nondominate hand.
@PiPArtemis
@PiPArtemis 6 жыл бұрын
I'm left handed and started playing right handed because that's all that was available to me as a kid. Since then I've messed around with left handed playing and it feels entirely unnatural to me. Then again, I do a lot of things right handed despite being a lefty. It's just a right handed world in the US

good video, but i might want to add that personally when i play the chord E minor i play it with my middle on A string and my ring finger on D string. by using your pointer you are closing off the ability to easily switch to a E major or down into an A minor. i only use the pointer on the A string if im doing a rare Esus4 or my pointer on D string if im doing an A major chord. basically im just saying to get used to doing it both ways because is you only get used to doing it one way you will run into problems switching into E major and A minor.

+Song Bike - jkehew1 After a year what should be expected?
@jkehew1
@jkehew1 8 жыл бұрын
+Lyle Barrow great question - after a year you should have the basic 16 chords memorized and sounding clear (no dead strings.) You should be able to change quickly between at least one "family" of chords, such as A to D to E back to A. Changing quickly between chords is the biggest challenge! It's important to start with slow songs first. Often I'll use Knocking On Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan) or Helpless (Neil Young) as good beginner songs. The main thing to remember is that it takes patience and persistence!
