I appreciate guys like Cuttino. He's not the athlete he once was, but he plays differently than most people I ever see in any of these runs. He makes the simple play. Other guys may make tough shots, but it's a tough way to play. Cuttino was making great simple passes, and taking good shots. Then, as he started getting more comfortable, he started frying guys in other ways. That was truly great to watch. Truthfully, just that IQ is what separates the pros from other guys at times.

The gather step is tricky since there are a myriad of factors to account for. But, in the most common case, as shown here at 7:56, the foot that is on the ground amidst the stride towards the basket the moment when both hands touch the ball after the final dribble is considered to be the gather step. Here, the player driving gathers the ball very low which makes determining the gather slightly deceptive and (if this video isn't mirrored) his right foot is on the ground while the left foot is in the air which which by the rules dictates that the right foot is the gather step and as soon as that left foot, which is inches off the ground when the gather occurs, lands it is considered the first step. After that first step, the player then takes two more steps for a total of three steps after the gather. Higher level referees are often taught to pay close attention to gathers that occur low to the ground because they are the types of gathers that most often lead to traveling. Also, Cuttino Mobley is right about the "rear screen." The general consensus is that the player with the possession of the ball is allowed the leeway create as long as the movement isn't overzealous. Pivoting into a close-range defensive player to attempt to dislodge said defender without using undue force, which is obviously up to the referee's discretion, is a part of that. Mobley pivoting towards the perimeter to set himself up as a screener while using his rear to to block off the the oncoming defender isn't illegal, it's a savvy play, that is also up to the referee's discretion. If Mobley leant over aggressively and overtly stuck his rear out to violently hamper the oncoming defender's progress, then that could be called. But, the defender was able to make it around, although Mobley's screen did afford his teammate moving without the ball the room to gain enough space to put his man in jail, which is the definition of a good screen. Also, Mobley stopped, albeit very briefly, prior to the oncoming defender making contact with him, which is all you need to account for the rule that screeners must give the opposition time to navigate a screen. Why did I type all these words.
