There were free people of colour in South Carolina, Georgia, north Carolina and Virginia too :D. South Carolina didn't even have any existing ban against interracial marriage until years after the civil war (source: Charleston Charleston: the city of a southern city) It was not solely a thing in Louisiana, but Louisiana did have a unique twist on it.

SC used to have a ban .. here’s a copy of just a couple lines from a law suit ….Under South Carolina law, marriage between a white person and an Indian, a half-breed, or a mestizo is prohibited and declared utterly null and void. Section 20-7, code of Laws of South Carolina, 1962. Under this South Carolina statute the marriage of A and B is void and B could not share in A's interstate personal property as a wife. However, the U.S. Supreme Court on June 12, 1967, in the case of Loving v. Commonwealth of Virginia, 388 U.S. 1, unequivocally declared that any State statute which invalidates a marriage solely on the grounds of a racial classification is unconstitutional and void. Specifically, the Supreme Court declared: There can be no doubt that restricticts…. I just copied a couple lines of the law suit.. it was a social security suit.. wife was denied benefits.. had to sue SC die to its racial laws….

@@WhodatLucy the ban was after the civil war, I am talking about BEFORE, the war. About 40 years after the conflict was the populist movement in the South, which overthrew the fusionist regimes in States like Mississippi and South Carolina which advocated coexist rather than Segregation. Old planter aristocrats who led these movements were overthrown electorally by populists who got their way by insulting the planter aristocrats as degenerate and anti-progressive monarchs à la Europe and by accusing them of being "race traitors" because they believed blacks should have basic civil rights, schools and have a right to citizenship. It is true that these statues were adopted, but only following the populist movement and further americanization of southern life. Which was an unbridled disaster for everyone involved.

@@WhodatLucy also funny story about loving Vs Virginia, Virginia's own "racial purity laws" were only drafted in the 1920s, and had to undergo revisions to make them friendlier to the First families of Virginia, who had recorded black slave and Indian ancestors and thus would be qualified as "negro" under the original drafts (Clement Eaton)

Lincoln wasn't anti slavery. He was anti slavery in New territorys. The war was over a 40 tax embargo on the south which went to the wall st bankers. Lincoln called up an army to fight its own people.

Not a word about the "Neutral Ground" between the Sabine& Calcasieu Rivers. This territory is where the first Protestant preacher west of the Mississippi settled. His name was Joseph Willis, and he is my great, great, great, great Grandfather. His daughter Sarah married Nathaniel West. Their offspring was born in the Neutral Ground. I have read that Jean LaFatitte(sic) & James Bowie smuggled and dealt in slaves after the importation from outside of America was outlawed. They would move into the modern day location of Lake Charles area. NOTE: I pronounce the word Charles like the character "Winchester"on M*A*S*H*. Any other time l pronounce the name like anyone else. I also pronounce the largest city in the State-Nawlins. For what French blood l have comes from my Moms side, nearly a thousand years ago when a "Frog"jumped the English Channel with William the Conqueror. Can ya tell that l'm politically incorrect??? Proud of it too!!!
