Series 103 Commuter Train (Part 1)
Japan's rapid economic growth was accompanied by a serious commuter rush. This train was introduced to solve this social problem at a time when all the trains were the old, brown, so-called "old type national tramcars". It was introduced in 1962 as a brushed-up version of the 101 series trains that had been used up to that time. They were used on the Yamanote Line and other commuter lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and by 1983, 3,447 cars had been manufactured. By 1983, 3,447 cars had been built, the largest number of cars ever built by a Japanese National Railways company. With the privatization of Japan Railways, about 900 cars were inherited by JR West, but the number was reduced to 48 cars by 2022 due to the introduction of successor cars. In the March 2022 revision, two trains, NS407 and NS409, which had been operated on the Nara Line by the Nara Branch of the Suita General Rolling Stock Works, were withdrawn from regular operation. This video includes running scenes of the two trains and looks back on the history of 103 Series commuter trains.
In the second part, we introduce the R1 formation of the Akashi depot of the Aboshi General Rolling Stock Works, which is the only one that retains a trace of its appearance in 1962. The sky blue body of this train is the last one to be used on the Wadamisaki Line.
Please take a look.
