The first LED headlight I put on my TW200 was a cyclops H4 bulb. That worked great for about two years until one day; the high beam just stopped working. I then bought The 1st JNS TW200 LED drop-in replacement headlight, which worked pretty well for close to another two years. It still works fine today but not too long ago, JNS came out with a new DOT approved LED headlight for the TW200. JNS sent me the new light to try out, so I thought I would make a comparison video to show the difference between all the headlights. Thanks for watching, and ride safe!
Disclaimer: work on and modify your bike at your own risk. You are solely responsible for your actions. Always use proper safety equipment for the job.
Full Disclosure: I purchased the original JNS light and cyclops bulb with my own money. JNS engineering sent me the new DOT light and brackets for free to try out. Other than the free product, I'm not being paid to do this review.

Thanks, bro, cool comparison, helps much deciding on what light to go for. I've been wondering on how to go about enhancing my beam, so far I've found that keeping the stock bulb and adding some side spot lights give me the best solution, but I'm obviously worried about the voltage, so I've started looking for options to replacing the stock one for an LED. I've somewhat reduced my voltage demand by replacing the stock rear bulb with an LED one, but that's not much for sure. My other thought is to get rid of the stock header altogether and replace the whole lighting solution with a couple of aftermarket beamers, which can be calibrated separately for low and high beams, but that'll take a considerable amount of customizing the whole front of the bike. Maybe it'll be worth it; I'll give it a try when I get the chance.
@TDubsKid

hey no problem, glad the video is helpful. yeah best to go all led so your not over taxing the electrical system. changing the rear to led will help. should work as long as your not blinding oncoming traffic. best of luck

I think the Yamaha universal heated grips consume 22 watts on the highest setting for the 600+ cc setting (there are three heat settings you can change easily, and then three motorcycle size settings you set one time). So that means you could easily run them on the 600cc + overall setting, then still have enough power left over for 20 watts of aux lights and still not be over factory wattage pulled from bike. So yeah that is definitely a great reason to use an LED headlight, not to mention the better light output!
@TDubsKid
@TDubsKid 3 жыл бұрын
nice! good to know, yeah I can't wait to try some heated grips out. and see how much power they use. for sure so worth it, if you change the rear tail light and running lamps to led you could save even more!
@bwxmoto
@bwxmoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@TDubsKid yup 👍 The Yamaha grip heaters have an auto off function that works very well. I’ve tested it on my XSR. They just detect if your bike is running or not with the voltage drop From 14v to 13v or whatever. And they shut right off if you forget.

I've watched a few other motorcycle channels over the past month because I want another bike and decided on a 2010 xl1200n sporster. But I gotta say not one channel I watched held a candle...... or a jns headlight to yours. If anyone out there has a position high enough on the food chain at a motorcycle company I'd recommend they give you any bike you wanted, matched your income and then some and bought you any video equipment you needed plus a company credit card for fuel and lodging to make promotional videos for the company.

Great comparisons for the headlight look at possibly getting a - Parabellum Suzuki DR650 Headlight Cover, its a acrylic lens to protect your lens, as both bikes have the same headlight should work fine on your TW. Helped keep my JNS headlight looking perfect 1000s of miles later.

Not sure if this is useful for you but it may be worth a try. My dad told me a story about how when he went hunting, grandpa told him to sleep in only his boxers to stay warm in the sleeping bag. He didnt believe him so he didnt do it and slept terribly. Second night he tried it and it turns out to be true. I guess the idea is that your clothes keep the heat close to you, and doesnt allow it to escape. Therefore there is less room for heat to build up, therefore your colder. I guess sleeping in your boxers allows the heat to spread to the whole sleeping bag to keep you warmer. Could be worth a shot ya never know.

I'd go with the DOT myself...having a wider arc of illumination _might_ give you enough warning when a deer (or any other big critter) thinks *now* is a good time to cross the road / trail. 😉 A good set of AUX lights should give you a nice near ground light patch (making up for the DOT's shortcomings in that category).

Awesome comparison! I would love to see you compare the Cyclops Ultra 10,000 lumens bulb. I made a video comparing it to stock but would love to see it in a controlled environment with the rest of yours. That JNS DOT is pretty awesome, but I love my cyclops. Definitely a different spread pattern.

Surprising how well the stock light lit up the forest and roads with a much wider spread and usable light. It seems like you can see more trees and contours with the stock vs even the new JNS. Your comparisons are awesome and scientific so we can really see the differences. I’m really curious how the upgraded LED bulb in the stock casing and lens compare to the JNS DOT. Maybe there’s something about the stock lens that helps spread the light better?
@TDubsKid
@TDubsKid 3 жыл бұрын

Another great video. Neat to see the headlights by the numbers, and pictured together, well done! I have the older JNS headlight like yours on my Honda XR650L, it is good, but it never really thrilled me. When I installed grip heaters on the DR650 I added a AUXITO H4 fanless LED bulb to the stock DR housing to save my charging system, and have been super impressed on three different night rides. (There is a shameless video on my channel) You can get them on Amazon for under $40. bucks and comes with two bulbs. They work so well I was considering removing the JNS and installing the stock XR headlight with the other AUXITO bulb that came in the package. For the light that comes up around the housing, I went low tech and picked up a few Black hand towels at Wally and simply roll one up and mash it between the light and the housing. It is nice to have a towel handy to clean the visor then just put it back. Pick up Aviation plexaglass cleaner or plastic polish for the scratches in the JNS, mine still looks great after almost two years.You need to get those grip heaters on! It took 45 minutes and even in AZ. they are Sooo nice. I look forward to your next video. Nice to get up and have my coffee watching TDubskid. Time for me to Ride!! Take care.

@@TDubsKid I have the grip heaters wired so when the key is switched off the power is cut. That way they will be off , when the key is off and you don’t come back to a dead battery. Went out today and rode back in the dark, JNS is coming off the XR650L and the stock light is going back on, with the other LED bulb that came in the pack of two. There’s a huge difference! Going to get another pair of $30. Dollar Tusk heated grips for the XR too. I’m spoiled now that I’ve rode the DR with them. Take care. Thank you.

Another great video T'D'Kid! Inspires me to go ride my '21 w/ 490 mile on it. Haha Put a whopping 70 miles on it last weekend. It has the cheap scamazon led bulb. It's throws much better light than the stock. JNS DOT looks like a winner! Still considering what guards with built in auxiliary lights to get. And heated grips.. And a different phone holder. And where to plug in the microwave... kidding.

A cheap and effective headlight upgrade is to use a Sylvania Silver Star H-4 bulb that you can usually find at WalMart. The light is much brighter than stock and they have a fairly long service life. They are a great upgrade for anything that uses an H-4 bulb.

Great video, thanks! While the JNS v2 (DOT approved) is clearly better than the JNS v1 ("high beam is a small dot"), it isn't as clear to me that the light thrown by LED is better than OEM. Yes it looks much brighter, but it is almost so much brighter that the over-illuminated near objects make it harder to see the far objects. I wish LED lights were much more orange or at least natural light in temp than white/blue. The wattage savings are very appealing.

I'm an old guy and old rider, but I recently bought a couple Tw200s for my family to share. I have been binge watching your videos for upgrade ideas and tips... YT is the best resource for info. I must say, after this video, I actually like the flood and color of the stock light the best. Yes, the JNS dot is bright, but I can't have that sheer blackness directly in front of the bike. Have you found an LED in the last year that beats the JNS?

hey glad to hear! congrats on your TW's. hope you have been enjoying the videos. I agree, I have learned so much on YT. yeah I like the beam pattern of the stock light. not sure what the sheer blackness in front of the bike means. you do need a good cutoff so your not blinding oncoming traffic. I use to have cyclops that was super bright. I think its brighter than the JNS, I have a video on it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bK6gi5WUqN6upoE.html. it eventually burned out. They have a new upgraded version that is way brighter and better. www.cyclopsadventuresports.com/Cyclops-100-H4-LED-headlight-bulb_p_192.html I would like to get that bulb test it out in a video. make sure to select ultra if you want the brightest possible on high beam

@@TDubsKid Many years ago, I had a Husky 510 that I took to Baja Designs for a street legal kit install. The headlight was an LED system and it was super bright, but it didn't broadcast any light downward directly in front of the bike. Something in the bulb and reflector design made the beam very bright way out front, but cast a shadow up close. Running fast through the dunes or on a fire road was great because you didn't out ride your lights. But on low speed climbs or descents on rocky or bouldery trails, I had to remember the obstacles that were 20 feet in front of me and hope I was on the correct line by the time the front tire was near said rock/rut/turn because by that time, I couldn't see them. I have since ridden a few friends bikes with LED lamps and find they still have the same issue. Don't get me wrong, I love how bright they are, but stock light/lens combo offers a better flood of light directly in front of the bike, with the only shadow being cast by the fender. On your video, you can see that the light from the DOT version shows a halo of light where the center of the beam is focused, about 50-70 feet in front of you, and there is a shadow about 10 feet ahead. If the beam were tipped up, you would get longer vision at speed, but the shadow up close gets worse. I know, it seems petty in regards to a bike as small and slow as the Tdub, but it's something I've always noticed on the LED systems. Notice how much light is flooded around the bike from the stock lamp... it is more helpful than we give it credit for, not just when riding, but for trail repairs or even setting up camp. I suppose some pods or an LED bar could supplement the LED main light, and I am likely asking too much from one system. Great videos though! They are a great how-to resource when I need confirmation that I am fixing something correctly.

I think a lot of the lighting contrast and detail is due to the different spectrum from the stock incandescent bulb as compared to the pure white LED, I prefer the warmer stock tone, easier on the eyes and does show greater definition and contrast.
