Hello! :) I love to use the Key guard! Its one of my favorites because you can use it to break a guard or bait your opponent sending you into a great position for the "after". For example, start with Key then thrust your sword out to get into versetsen then once your opponent blocks you can use the momentum for a fast zwerchhaw. This can be done to any opening thats appropriate, remember you want to attack to the opening from where he came. Also!! I love to use the Key guard against those dirty hand snipers that target my hands on openings. Its a great defence against that. :) You can also use it to hide your distance if you're sparring someone who isnt familiar with range. You can also use the Key guard to preform middlehaws (middle cuts) from it. It works great to throw your opponent off when you take a step out. This can also be used to preform a krumphaw! The Key guard is a Great Defence guard especially on the withdrawl. If you think about it, its essentially the ochs guard but lowered. Try it with people who also stand in pflug! Hope this helps! Moving from a forward position retreating into Key is a way to use it as a "retreating-to-guard" when your opponent gets too close and/or you want/need to make some space between you. Such as if they are coming in binding your hanging guard, you could safely retreat to Key and threaten with the thrust from Key.

Fiore (Italian) uses the terms True/False. German sources tend to use Long/Short; but True/False makes more sense to most students that is what we use.

I do really enjoy learning the translated names of the guards, because in training we normally stick to the anglicized names.

I know this is five months late but you can find them 1. at Purple heart armory for more affordable version. or at Black fencer Ensifer Danelli Regenyei Castille Armory And others The "blunts" are called Federshwerts aka Feders for short. However these are steel. If you don't have at least a partial kit (Jacket, helmet, hema approved sparring gloves, back of the head protector, throat guard, cup for men), I recommend not to get steel. On Purpleheart armory or Black Fencer you can buy Synthetic Pentiis for 120 bucks or so. That is the cheapest safest way to get in to hema without hurting your friends since you don't need a jacket for it. With those you just need helmet, lacrosse gloves or hema gloves, and a cup for men.

The proper position to end the cut is the Change and Unicorn guards, that is in no way overreaching. Trying to cut into ochs and plough leads to very weak cuts. There are times when you want to keep your point on line, but for a real committed attack the point rotates through the target.

In the translation we use, the term is spelled as Hangen, or Hangentort. That's not to say there weren't dialect differences based on the region, so it very well could have been spelled hängen by others.

In the manual you find Hangetort as well as Hengetort. I am pretty sure it is the same thing. Mann wir müssten mal einen Linguisten fragen. Mittlerweile bin ich echt unsicher geworden. Ich hab das Fechtbuch jetzt nochmal gelesen aber ob hanget, hangenden und hange jetzt passiv, präsens, präteritum sind wäre echt die frage. Wenn man es mit a ausspricht kommt es mir eher wie passivsachen vor (Also wie ein verhangen zb, nur ohne das ver), aber mit e.... nicht^^ Und wie es nun genau in der Grammatik war weiß ich nicht, aber es gibt sicher Leute die es wissen. Sicher ist zumindest, dass alles schön ins einfache Präsens im Englischen übersetzt wurde. Die Frage ist, ob aus Korrektheit oder aus Verständlichkeit.

Who makes the training swords used in this video?

Yes, I and others at Blood and Iron have used Key successfully, but it still isn't as high percentage as most of the other guards. Part of it is that we don't spend a lot of time on drills involving it. Even if you can understand a device it doesn't help without a ton of repetition. The other major obstacle is that Key is probably the position most inhibited by protective equipment. There are so many devices to develop and train, and so little time. :(

I am not convinced... let's fight^^ But one srsly Question: Why is the Arm under the Blade? I can holde the sword like Schlüssel but can easily put the left arm down. I am very sceptic against Schlüssel.

In my experience, the arm under the blade can help to steady the point in order to make a more precise thrust. Having the arm to support the blade is similar to how gripping the blade while halfswording makes it easier to aim a thrust.

It's to prevent long term wrist fatigue with more drawn out fights with larger blades. One day try and hold a fullsise for at least an hour and a half, then try it with Key. You'll feel the difference, the longer you hold it.

A "greatsword" (which is not a real sword, there is no such thing as a "greatsword", it's actually called a Zweihander or Montante) is used similarly to a longsword, but its longer reach allows it to almost handle like a pike or spear as well. The guards/wards/stances in the video are real, they are used as passing stances and you will find that you end up in them during fights. Now, sword and dagger is a very useful combo that happened all the time. Sword and shield also obviously happened all the time. Regal Render Zweihander is german name for greatsword. Spadone, montante, claymore, zweihander, miecz wielki, two handed sword, great sword. All mean either big or two handed (sword). Just in diffrent languages.

Although the names are really more of a modern construct, back in the day you're probably right they'd just call swords whatever.
