Anfang 2018 brachte Joan Baez zur großen Freude ihrer Fans ein neues Album heraus: „WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND“. Zehn Jahre zuvor hatte sie auf „Day After Tomorrow“ Songs von Tom Waits, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Josh Ritter und anderen eingespielt. Im Olympia stehen ihre neuen Lieder sowie ihre bekannten Hits und Kompositionen von Bob Dylan auf dem Programm. Neues, Altes und Coverversionen - was will man mehr bei einer Abschiedstournee? GOOD-BYE, JOAN!

I was a fan when I heard her first record around 1962. The first time I saw her was around 1964 at a Civil Rights rally across from the White House. I was just standing in the crowd, and Joan Baez emerged from the crowd. She was wearing a summer dress and I thought she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. She still looks great. I call her America's Sweetheart. The last time I saw her was a few years ago at the Kate Wolf music festival in Mendocino county. She performed with her son who's father was David Harris who died yesterday at age 76. David was a draft resister and served 20 months in a Federal prison. I was a draft resister too but instead of prison, they gave me a permanent 4-F. Our generation is rapidly fading. I hope Joan Baez outlives me and lives to a hundred.

Women and men like this in America are not born anymore. the pacifist commitment and the fight against social injustices are now watered down by imperialist propaganda. Today in front of the capitol there are few voices fighting against the war and the wicked policy of the warmongering USA. I hope America wins back the very soul of her…against all empires and against all wars, true and false

Loved Joan’s beautiful voice and her message to humanity in my teens…sadly, I started going deaf in my 20’s…hearing aids for almost 40 years…then profound deaf in both ears, cochlear implant in 2018 but music tones were mostly lost and it all sounded very electronic. Now, I just got my newest cochlear sound processor…I can hear quite a few more music tones…listening to Joan again…brings tears to my eyes, after years of being in a music desert….thank you God!

In 1969 I had the delightful pleasure of briefly meeting Joanie. She was very quiet and shy and extremely gracious. I was a house guest of one of her friends and neighbors in Los Altos near San Francisco. She was with David and had just cut her long hair. I was so nervous that all I could think of to say was, " I like your hair." The next day, as my boyfriend and I were driving down the hill she was pulled over on the side of the road with car trouble. Of course my guy tried to fix her car for 40 minutes but no luck. She thanked him profusely but as our eyes met she smiled at me and winked. As if to say, "We gotta let them try to rescue us don't we?" I had a crush on her then and now she has my great respect and admiration.

This woman is a summons. She has my extreme admiration for having been a fighting woman alongside Martin Luther King, her fight against the Vietnamese War, and her support for the people of Sarajevo: the greatest woman and artist in the world. She sacrificed her singing career for the great militant causes of her time. A great humanity in this good person, throughout non-violent like the masters of her category: GHANDI, Martin Luther King, etc. Thanks Joan BAEZ.

One of my all time favourites. Surpasses even eulogism. Her composition, composure, clarity and charisma are in a rarefied field of artistic and humanitarian sharing and encouragement for all humanity, My dear wife, Joyce and I, had the immense privilege of seeing her perform in the Place de la Concorde in Pars - a free concert - part of the bicentenary here (1979- 1989). There were three female folk-singers of note in the 1960s, and of the three of them only Joan Baez remained true to her roots and her heart. Judy Collins went top-40s early-on by riding to fame on Josh Rifkin's cheesy pop arrangement of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now. She was quickly flushed by serious folkies after a reporter caught her getting off a plane at LaGuardia in a business suit and she commented, 'You don't think I really wear that hippie stuff except on stage, do you?' Duh.Joni herself turned out to be much more than a pretty, blonde folk-singer; she evolved musically far beyond the simple harmonies of folk music and eventually left some of her early fans behind as she moved through fusion jazz into a musical world that she herself defined. I was almost one of them: I fell in love with her--and her painfully-personal music and lyrics--in my early twenties, and until I saw her onstage in Philadelphia with Tom Scott, Robben Ford, and David Guerin (her current paramour), I could not reconcile my adolescent image of her with the musical reality that she (like J.S. Bach) had achieved as she matured as a musician. I owe thanks to Henry Lewy for helping me to do that.Joan Baez is both simpler and more complex. She has never been a 'musician' in the technical sense--she never learned to read music, according to the liner notes on one of her later albums--but she was born with one of the most beautiful and powerful voices in the last half-century. Had she been trained she could have become an operatic mezzo of international renown. Instead, she learned to use her voice to speak for her heart, and that heart is what makes Joan Baez Joan Baez.I have frequently found myself in tears because I could not believe in the just world Joan Baez wants to see. I still don't. Human beings are not good enough for her. But no matter what, Joan Baez has ALWAYS been true to her own beliefs. Few artists can say the same.
