She is music, she is song, she is goodness, she is kindness, she is compassion, she is empathy, she is unshakable commitment to humanity, the voice to the voiceless, the care to the forgotten. She is a precious gift of God to us all. She is, in one word , LOVE. May we can be worthy of this love. Gratitude forever ,Joan Baez.

I've enjoyed her singing when the world was young and still enjoy it. However let's not confuse her with her talent or her politics. She deserves credit for her role in the civil rights movement and in the antiwar movement. I personally regret that she and others like her failed to persuade the Congress and the public to call it off sooner. That said one of her most famous stunts, refusing to pay all of her income tax was a fraud. What she did, according to Cecil Poole, the first Black US Atty in Northern California, was put the amount that she owed plus interest in a bank account, then after getting the headline, she would disclose the account and the IRS would seize it. So rather than a grand gesture that put her in peril of heavy fines and even jail, her risk was only the interest and whatever penalty amount her lawyers negotiated. The voice of an angel, but one with lawyers on speed dial.

Congress was pretty conservative during the Nixon Administration - for those of us that wished the Vietnam war would end, it seemed hopeless. But the Watergate burglers were inept and got caught. So long, Tricky Dickie! I was at Mountain Home AFB from Dec. '71 to Jan. '74. I loved to listen to Joan Baez in the early 70s - we just about wore out our records since they were the only entertainment that we could afford. That part of my life seems to be a blur now.

@@dhutch71 My major regret about Nixon and his secret plan to end the war by pulling out, was that he did not do it on his first day in office. He could have saved many lives had he been willing to take a political risk. Many lives and much suffering are on his and Kissinger's heads. I would gladly have forgone the opportunity to see Cambodia from tree top level.

@@fred1barb Agree 100%. Also, Robert S. McNamara and his body count of 'enemy' soldiers and U.S. troops.... as a way of determining who the winner was going to be. There is a great Documentary titled "The Fog of War" - it chronicles his life. Toward the end of the DVD, in 1995 - 20 years after the war ended - he is sitting at a large table in a conference room, along with many of the key military officers and politicians from both sides of the war and he blurts out " We all thought the war in Vietnam was the first of many with all the countries in Southeast Asia (the 'Domino Effect')..... but I was wrong.... it was a civil war!" Take care. Hutch

In 1967 I heard from the daughter of then ADA chief that McNamara was telling people that Vietnam was a mistake. But he continued to support fighting it in public. He knew that the Domino Effect was a lie then - but kept the killing going. How did it benefit him?
