Here's a wonderful outtake from DA Pennebaker's documentary "Don't Look Back". Faithfull and Baez create brief but spellbinding harmonies while Bob taps away on a draft of his first book, "Tarantula".
Beautiful as this impromptu performance is, things get awkward when it's contextualized with Baez's and Dylan's turbulent relationship: Speaking about the 1965 tour, Baez commented in a Rolling Stone interview, “I just sort of trotted around, wondering why Bob wouldn’t invite me onstage, feeling very sorry for myself, getting very neurotic and not having the brains to leave and go home. That would be the best way to describe that tour. It was sort of just wasted time.” Well, maybe for you, Joan... But in my opinion, time making music like this is time well spent.
I imagine one of the reasons this scene wasn't included in the final cut was copyright complications with Decca Records, which owned the rights to the song. We're lucky to be able to see it all these years later.
Peace & Love,
~SP

Maryann Faithful said this about the video: I first met Bob at the Savoy in 1965. There’s a clip of me and Joan Baez singing As Tears Go By in the hotel room while Bob is hammering away on a typewriter. Later when I turned him down, he told me that it had been a poem about me, but he’d torn it up. I was so upset, but we got over that and have been friends for 56 years. I really like him.

I never knew Marianne was in the Pennebaker film! Thanks, SP! Her debut album was the very first LP I ever bought as a kid. (Blonde on Blonde was the second -- the guy in the record store convinced me it was a bargain: 2 records for the price of 1!! Lol. Life changing decision!) I was lucky to be in front row at a club called Slim's in San Francisco (owned by Boz Scaggs) when Marianne Faithfull performed there in the late 80s (early 90s?) By this time she was the aging chanteuse & had developed her older, whiskey-and- cigarette voice. She was GREAT! Thanks again for this fantastic clip & for ALL your hard work, SP!

People seldomly understand the concept of beautiful people ,even the metaphors are confused as it is in thier face yet misunderstood. Pain is hiding from view where they've been attempting to be more than anyone would allow them the space to even exist with them .Hidden are so many personalities from view it rather crazy .Narcissistics have thier flamboyant ways to show and sell to others. However quiet intense significant individuals are hard pressed and damaged by life's experiences. Never could they have been where they were and not been damaged by all that which existed at the time. Feel fortunate to have seen some aspects of beautiful people emerging in the old days it was remarkable indeed. Mary Ann Faithful is a individual unlike many and lived her life strong and pure honestly its amazing she even survived it as well as she did. Class acts you really cannot understand until they've suffered it all out and moved on sanctuary is alot the same way.Hey Bulldog backhanders shook the crowds but rock and roll still the big ticket folks know where it's at .Rock On !

Thanks once again Swingin’ Pig this is a great extension/outtake from the original scene in DLB. I really like the Baez/Faithfull harmonies too. Like you said probably a Decca rights issue that it was removed or Maysles Brothers took it out because they felt it was not related too much w/Dylan?? Either way fantastic to have & I personally love this documentary. Again Albert relaxed & chillin talking w/Bob. In the original clip it always amazed me how Dylan could stay focused typing while Joan was singing & playing guitar right near him & it was like she wasn’t even in the room with him. Just my analysis.

Yeh but at least he stopped typing to have a listen, but your right he was an ego maniac and he treated Joan horribly, on this tour especially. There's a fascinating bit of outtake footage on the Criterion DLB release of BD at the typewriter typing out the lyrics to "Jack O'Diamonds". He hands the draft off to actor/Shadows star Ben Carruthers who was in London at the time starring in a play. Soonafter Carruthers recorded the song with his band The Deep and released it as a single on Parlophpone. That's where Fairport Convention copped it for their debut LP.

@@SwinginPig I think BD did it as a favor for Carruthers who needed a song for the play. Not sure the single (credited to "Carruthers-Dylan") was something BD intended. It might be the only instance of Dylan on film writing a song, one cribbed from his own liners to "Another Side Of. . ., and it's not even officially part of his canon. Perfectly Dylan.

@@michaelchaiken2299 Yea can’t think of any other clips that capture him making art, except for the BBC interview where he draws the interviewer haha. Thanks for the info on the single, didn’t know the background of the song. Must be tons of border-line “throwaways” that never came to fruition or entered his canon (at least enough solid lyrics to base an entire album off of-lost on the river). No matter how much I learn about Dylan, the sheer amount of material he managed to produce will always amaze me.

"Word vomit" perfectly describes it-- it was mostly unintelligible but hilarious stream of consciousness gibberish. Wish I still had my 1st edition copy -- it'd be a relic of some very stoned times & might be fun to re-read now. One line from one story stuck in my mind though: "she ate health food and got run over by a truck." I was smoking killer weed while reading that & truly almost died laughing. I wonder if Dylan was influenced to publish "Tarantula" by John Lennon's "In His Own Write" which came out around the same time. I had a copy of that one too, as well as Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This Book." All my cool books of the era, lost or stolen over the years.
