Marilyn Monroe did too!
The Empire Theatre in Leicester Square was the magnet that drew a vast crowd of Londoners, who went to see all they could of those attending the Royal Film Performance. Many well known stars and personalities of the film world assembled in the theatre. The big moment was the arrival of the Queen and the Royal party. Her Majesty was received by the President and Chairman of the Cinematograph Trade Benevolent Fund, Mr Reginald Bromhead. The Queen accepted a bouquet from six year old Nicholas Douglas-Morris, before she proceeded to take her place for the performance of "The Battle of The River Plate".
GV Leicester Square. CU sign "Battle of The River Plate". Arrivals - Brigitte Bardot, Laurence Harvey, Anita Ekberg, Anthony Steele, Vera Ellen, John Davis, Dinah Sheridan, Joan Crawford, Victor Mature, Norman Wisdom, John Gregson, Marilyn Monroe, Arthur Miller, Reginald Bromhead, Sir Tom O'Brien, Lady Harewood, Captain Bell, Admiral Sir Charles Woodhouse, AE Matthews, Admiral Sir Edward Parry. GV foyer. Queen arrives and Princess Margaret. Reginald Bromhead receives the Queen (Lord Mountbatten also in the party). Walk upstairs. Greets personalities. Bouquet presented by 6 year old Nicholas Douglas-Morris. GV Royal party seated. ® LIBRARY MATERIAL ON GRAF SPEE - HMS "Exeter" arriving home. Churchill leading cheering. Members of ship's crew. Speech by member of the crew. "Graf Spee" on fire.

Oh, the glamour and elegance of bygone years. I loved Joan Crawford. She was one of the best from the golden Age of Hollywood. I didn't get the feeling that she was being disrespectful by looking at the Queen. I think that she was merely looking down. Anyway, that's what I got from it. What a treat to see this. And, the sailors at the end of the newsreel. Wow!

The talk about Merilyn as being the most beautiful woman in the world!!! No!!!! They only say that because they didn't get to see the old Merilyn!!! Joan did sth in her life and in movies... Merilyn was only considered a sex symbol that is why if Merilyn hadn't died and got to pass Joan's age in this video she would have looked like a parade with this dress... That is why I say to everyone that they should relax a bit and admire the true beauties Joan and the queen. (But most of all the Queen of Hollywood ❤️)

Not supposed to curtsey Joanie!! Your an American citizen!! We curtsey to: NO ONE!! A simple bowing of the head(in deference to a head of state)would've been suffice.

Joan hated Marilyn. Jealous Joan said Marilyn flaunting her sexuality was vulgar. It must have galled her that the Queen talked to Marilyn but not to Joan. Joan was a confused and tragic woman.

wrong, there was nothing to be jealous of, Joan was too much of a lady to roll around in the mud with the pigs, she had no respect for anyone though that was lazy and did not work hard

Joan didn't have to be jealous! In my opinion she was much more beautiful than Merilyn from the beginning!

Marilyn was the bigger star at that point, but that doesn't mean she was the bigger star. She may have had an unfortunate life, but let's be honest, she didn't have to work nearly as hard as JC did.

Forget Anita Ekberg. Joan's preoccupation was no doubt the elephant in the room, one Marilyn Monroe. Joan's jealousy of the younger and more beautiful star drove her to detract her every chance she got, up to and even after Monroe died. She started in on Liz Taylor as well, but after Monroe died and Liz had won a couple of Oscar's to Joan's one, she backed off Liz.

I adore Joan, but she should not have curtsied. She was an American, and Americans do not bow or curtsy foreign princes.

She was in UK, before the Queen. So, it would be inappropriate not to curtsy.

Marilyn's outfit looks trashy, too bad bad she didn't try to have someone help her dress for this occasion.

Joan was steering with envy and JEALOUSY. Joan was no longer young and pretty. Not that I was a fan of the queen. She was not that pretty. Jackie Kennedy was.

Joan was ALWAYS beautiful and she aged so gracefully! Can you imagine Merilyn old? Sure, Joan would have made her look like any other ordinary woman. Joan was the Queen 👑 our Queen of Hollywood!!! (My opinion don't hate😅😇)

With all due respect to both the Queen and the late Joan Crawford-an American doing the bowing/curtesy thing is stupid-someone should have explained to them we fought a revolution so that we didn't have to do this-along with a lot of other things....

Why did Joan Crawford curtsey to the queen? Crawford is an American citizen, not a British subject!! We Americans curtsey to no one! Even if we are on a visit to another country that has a reigning monarch/sovereign.

I think in this case, it’s because Joan Crawford was in England. It was just a polite gesture. Had the queen been in America, Joan would have probably just shaken her hand
