Joan Fontaine was the epitome of beauty, elegance and grace. We will never see her like again. She lived to be 96 and had a full, marvelous, wonderful life. It doesn't get better than that. RIP Joan Fontaine...WE LOVE YOU!

I never noticed how beautiful Joan Fontaine was. Really ! I liked her personality on screen. Her unique style of acting. Joan had an approachable personality about her. Her smile - her voice. They don't make stars like this anymore Truly an underrated star Her sister Olivia always appeared like a 'snob' to me, but not Joan. Joan Fontaine was here in Chicago many years ago in a touring play. And I along with some others waited to talk to her at the stage door. Well Joan greeted us and was so pleasant. Olivia Dehavilland on the other hand was here in a play and was not interested in talking to fans. What a snob. Yes, Joan Fontaine was of the Golden era of movies. . Oh I realize she won an Academy Award, but she's not remembered like Davis, Crawford or an Katharine Hepburn. Their names are bought up all the time, But there are a lot of great actress's who are underrated or should I say, 'not given the credit that they deserve.

How lovely. Thank you. I wish she had won the Oscar for Letter from an Unknown Woman, her best performance. Harry Belafonte said in his autobiography that Joan Fontaine virtually ended her movie career for playing his love interest in Island in the Sun (1957). No white female star had been romantically involved on-screen in a Hollywood movie with a black man. Joan put her career on the line to break this taboo & Hollywood punished her for it. She made very few films after 1957 & never made a film after 1966. That's what Harry said. I had the joy of seeing Joan Fontaine on stage at the National Film Theatre in 1978 when she was promoting her autobiography in London. I came face to face with her briefly afterwards at the autograph signing. I was so in awe of her I'm sure my jaw dropped. She was very beautiful, gracious & clearly respected her fans.

Beautiful, touching tribute. Joan is my favorite golden age actress. I had the pleasure of meeting her in 1970, when I was just a kid. A year before she passed, Joan asked me to write an article about her performance in The Lion in Winter. It will be published in an upcoming issue of Films of the Golden Age.

It's just so beautiful to see how many people loved her,not only for her remarkable contribution to cinema with her beautiful,tender acting ,but her compassion as a human being. She really was so caring and gracious with her fans,. She is truly, dearly missed,but is in a better place now,I'm sure smiling down upon the people who loved her! Thank you so much, Sara for this lovely tribute to Joan Fontaine, one of our greatest actresses for the classics. No one could play a romantic character as well as Ms. Fontaine, to name a few "Letter From An Unknown Woman", "Jane Eyre", "Rebecca", "Suspicion", "The Constant Nymph", and later "Born To Be Bad". R.I.P. Joan. Just watched your lovely interview with Doris Day, another of my all time favorites who just recently passed away. You both shared in common your great love for animals as do I.

Dear saraismyname, Just came across your tribute to Joan Fontaine,and I must tell you I have never been more impressed with a video, than I am with yours. Well Done! You've done something wonderful when you can bring a grown man to the brink of tears. Joan Fontaine was not only a great Academy Award winning actress, but a lovely lady in every sense of the word, well educated, intelligent,and a woman of many talents. My tribute to her pales in comparison to yours. I must learn to edit old movies in order to create a masterpiece like yours. Keep up the great work!

She was not Rebecca. She was 'I' de Winter. Rebecca is the dead first wife, never seen on screen. I am amazed at how many people make this elementary error. Have they.not seen the film?
@yc7105
@yc7105 5 жыл бұрын
Of course people know she was not Rebecca. But Joan Fontaine was so perfect, if "Rebecca" was alive in the movie, who could play it? Read and try to understand the real meaning!
@jasonhurd4379
@jasonhurd4379 5 жыл бұрын
@@yc7105 I've always thought, if Rebecca had appeared in the film, perhaps in a flashback, Gene Tierney would have been the ideal actress for the part. She could have conveyed the character's duplicity perfectly, the sadism and cruelty hiding behind the façade of beauty, charm and wit. Vivien Leigh might have been good, as well. But no one could have played 'I' de Winter as well as Joan Fontaine. Have you ever seen the various screen tests for the Fontaine role? They are part of the special features on the Criterion Collection mastering of Rebecca, and they are most revealing. Every young actress in Hollywood participated, including Margaret Sullavan (too hard and matronly), Anne Baxter (good but also a little hard) and Leigh herself. It is fascinating to see how clueless these actresses were about the character of 'I'. Leigh in particular is so coy, knowing and sophisticated that it is difficult to believe she was known for her acting ability. Only Fontaine's test shines with genuineness and warmth, as well as a 'frightened doe' quality which suits the character perfectly. She really was the ideal choice for the role.
@beckylink
@beckylink 3 жыл бұрын
Jason Hurd Hard to believe Vivien Leigh was known for her acting ability? Huh? She just wasn’t right for that role. (Although she played it later on radio quite convincingly). But have you not seen the nuance that Vivien is famous for ?! Check out Waterloo Bridge and you will see how far she can play from your description. Myra is shy and completely different from Scarlett but only a few months separate them. Joan Fontaine is also a favorite of mine and was born to play the second Mrs de Winter, of course. Vivien would have made a great Rebecca. Also Gene Tierney. Hitchcock said himself that Vivien was more of a Rebecca.
