Rebecca, Jane Eyre, Letter From An Unknown Woman IMO are her best films.

I've seen 16 of Joan's movies. This time I have seen all of the top 10 and only one of the bottom ten.. No surprise that Rebecca and Suspicion are my favourites. TCM aired Ivy earlier this year so I was able to crosss that off my list of to-see movies. Gunga Din is excellent, but she isn't in it very much. Sometimes I forget that there is a woman is Gunga Din. Great posters.

Thanks Flora. I've only seen 7 of her films - Rebecca, Suspicion, Ivanhoe, Gunga Din, The Witches, Casanova's Big Night and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Well she was the leading lady in Gunga Din even if she wasn't in it much.

Of course "Rebecca" and "Suspicion" are excellent movies, but "The constant nymph" and "You gotta stay happy" have a special place in my heart: in the first one the combination Joan Fontaine/Korngold's music, in the second one the combination Joan Fontaine/James Stewart, my favourite actors ever! Also "Letter from an unknown woman" and "The women" are very special moviesfor me. So this is my top 5 (actually, it is a top 6): 1. "You gotta stay happy" and "The constant nymph" 2. "Rebecca" 3. "Suspicion" 4. "Letter from an unknown woman" 5. "The women"

They are the only sisters to star in Oscar best pictures in an consecutive years. Olivia in Gone with the Wing (1939) and Joan in Rebecca (1940) and nominated as best actress in leading role in 1941 which Joan won. Amazing sisters with equal beauty and talent. That spells FEUD.

Hey Steve.....I know I have been gone awhile...but I thought I watched and commented on this one. Wow...all the way to 11th before my first one seen....Casanova's Big Night....which is an ok Hope movie. #7 Ivanhoe....good action in that one #5 Suspicion....Grant's first Hitch movie #3 The Women...she is one part of a massive cast #2 Gunga Din....one of my dad's favorites. #1 Rebecca...a classic! So that is 6 seen....not too impressive. But this video is...voted up.

Hi Bruce, I beat you by one on Fontaine's films. I can't remember my tally on your web page. We have the same number 1 which is nice. Ivanhoe was actually nominated for Best Picture would you believe, it's one of the better historical films of that decade. Thanks for the comment.

In my opinion, her best movie is Max Ophüls' Letter from an unknown woman. Better than Rebecca, thgought the latter is more famous. Unfortunately, Letter from an unknown woman was not a success in the US when it was released in 1948. Nowadays, it is highly regarded.

What about "From This Day Forward"? It is a great movie with quality acting and scenario. Should be in top 10. Very underrated.

Hi there, not sure what happened to From This Day Forward, when I was cutting this down to 30 movies that must have been one of the films that fell thru the net, sorry about that. Great post Marco. Classic actress, I knew her best from the two Hichcock films Rebecca (a favorite of mine), Suspicion and the epic Ivanhoe. Like her sister Olivia, she lived a long life. Thanks for posting.

It is lame to use IMDB ratings for a list like this. It skews too male, thus Gunga Din and The Women, in which Joan Fontaine had so little screen time as to be almost superfluous.

Hi there, IMDB is just one of the sources I use, if I didn't add the IMDB to my list of sources I might end up with films few people have heard of at the top of the chart. I couldn't leave out Gunga Din because it was a famous film and she was the leading lady, even if her role wasn't very important. I do try and avoid cameos and walk on parts. Thanks for posting!

I would have switched A Damsel in Distress with Ivy or Born to be Bad. Joan is no dancer, but otherwise it's an entertaining movie. Born to be Bad would have been even better if Joan got to be a bit nastier and chew up some scenery.

Tough call. I'm partial to "Flight to Tangier" because I think it was the first Fontaine film I saw and also one of the first vintage movies I saw that made me realize I liked the older movies. Long time ago, tho. "Ivy" is great; the finale surprised me. I enjoyed "Frenchman's Creek' - great color film.
