The Radical History School kicked off the Sunday for the Tolpuddle Martyrs' Online Festival with the story of Joan Maynard from her biographer, Kristine Mason O'Connor. Plus an interview with Barry Leathwood, former NUAW leader and TGWU national secretary.
Joan was a controversial left-winger but remained a champion of farm workers throughout her life, whether as an activist, Vice President of the NUAW (National Union of Agricultural and Allied Workers) or even later when she became an MP.
She was also a Tolpuddle regular and there is a bench in her honour in front of the cottages.
