The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Wow, what a voice, the range of which was from G to way above C. In her prime in the 60S, no one comes close.

For the record her range was exactly G3-E6 natural. Though she could reach F6 in warm ups, touched it live in a recording of Madame Herz, and 1 apocryphal recording of Königin der Nacht.

I saw her onstage in this opera, but many years later, 1986. She still sounded stupendous!

The ten seconds from about 2:18 on are really all the evidence you need why this is the greatest voice in the history of opera. Higher, bigger, more focused. It's mind boggling.

Take it from someone who heard her many times. Joan Sutherland was never not in her prime. She was more or less sublime, but that was it.

Lol, while she was still singing she was in her prime..every human stops at some point…it’s the normal way of things, whether you understand it or not

@@lastupendaboy I am a veteran singer, and my voice is in decline. Voices grow old with the rest of the body.. They have their peak years, and then they decline, which is what happened to Dame Joan...and every other singer.

I can remember so clearly the first time I heard this aria. I checked the LP of Joan Sutherland Art of the Diva out from my public library when I was a teenager, and I can remember how thrilling her performance of this aria was. I will never forget that. No one else comes close IMHO.

@@purisermonisamator Sutherland's voice sounds like you put Galli-Curci and Flagstad in a blender. AGC was a great coloratura but the voice was kind of small and the over all effect very soft-grained. Her recordings are immensely pleasurable and she is the only one who actually sounds like herself in the early early cylinders because of the simplicity and clarity of the sound she made. That being said, while she was a sensation in her time she was no Sutherland. Tetrazzini comes closer although the middle of her voice was horrific.

Верхние ноты Джоан изумительны, но медиум и низы чем далее, тем более разочаровывали. Ровность звучания всех регистров у Галли-Курчи выше всех похвал, и оснащенность вокальным "мясом" превосходна - правда, это слышно только на виниле: "цифра" безжалостно обкрадывает голос АГК, как, впрочем, и Джоан. В этой арии я предпочитаю Амелиту, которая превосходит ДС и совершенным легато, и сочностью нижних нот, и пониманием музыкальной формы этой арии. Что касается Тетраццини, то её середина до 1908 года, действительно, звучала по-мальчишески скудно - при блистательных верхах. Следующие четыре сезона она пела в Ковент-Гарден рядом с Мельбой, и записи этого периода, как и более поздние, демонстрируют, что её середина стала и крепче, и шире, хотя это и произошло за счет некоторой потери совершенства верхних нот. Стихия Тетраццини - оптимистическая бравура, тогда как Галли-Курчи - мечтательная элегичность, которая так идет Беллини и которая делала Амелиту незабываемой Джильдой.

Joan looks fabulous here. Great necklace and dress. Her singing is divine but one wishes for better sound from the orchestra, but such was TV at the time. This is one of my favorite arias. I think there is a chorus in it on the Art of the Prima Donna, where the sound was good and you could tell what a huge instrument she had.

This is a beautiful filmed performance by joan, both vocally and physically. However, oh my god the orchestra is awful here. I have never heard anything like that...
