She had the greatest voice God ever gave a singer; no one came close. There were many brilliant and beautiful soprano voices, but no one could do what she could, consistently, for over 30 years. I listen to her every day; she brings me such joy and thrills me like no other. May she sing with the angels forever.

Joan Sutherland was one of the miracles of opera. Together with Luciano Pavarotti they were the absolute A Team of opera. Now that both are gone our world became poorer. We are lucky that they lived in an era where they could leave us so many souvenirs of their great art. For me Joan Sutherland will live forever through her recordings. May she rest in peace and sing in Heaven to all those who are dear to us and no longer here with us.

I had the great fortune of seeing her in some of her great roles at the Met Opera, as well as recitals in offbeat places like Brooklyn and Buffalo. There have been many great sopranos - I won't name them all here - but Sutherland's combination of rich sound and extraordinary agility; I never heard a voice like that before or since. Her son Adam gave a very moving tribute at this ceremony. I remember meeting Maestro Bonynge and Dame Joan backstage after a Don Giovanni - she was lovely and polite; he was extremely friendly and talkative! Both were delightful.

Luciano Pavarotti called her the greatest voice he ever heard. When you listen to those greats who worked with her describe their experiences they almost go into a transcendental state of awe she was that great.

I hear her for the first time when I was 6 years old even I am hard of hearing. I hear her close to the tv speaker. My mom saw me and she turns up louder. I fall in love with the opera ever since til now. I sang with sign language. I performed the recital quite a while. Now I am retired from sign singing.

I was blessed to hear her live and on wonderful recordings. I feel that Dame Joan did so much for opera in many ways. First, she had a miraculous voice - clear and magical, almost effortless. And also, I thank her for bringing opera back to the world of music and art where it belongs. She was a true artist for art's sake. She brought the focus of opera back on the beauty of voice and music. Not on glamour, scandal, papparazzi and celebrity. Opera needed that.

He deeply loved her.As you know only too well, no Bonynge,No Joan as we knew her.For that we will always be in his debt.We can only consider ourselves extremely lucky to have lived throught the Sutherland/Bonynge era. I count myself VERY lucky to have worked at Covent Garden when her career was at it's height, and to have been there whn she eventually retired. Just to show you what she was like.I was in Bond Street about 7 years after her retirement, and her familiar voice called my name!

Tribute to a wonderful woman, a wonderful artist. It was her voice that introduced me to the awesome glories of bel canto as a teenager. I taught myself to sing a whole-step trill by listening to her sing those final seconds of "Caro Nome" where Gilda trills as she walks offstage. Ah, the power of music!!! How deprived we humans would be without it!!! Requiescat in pace.

Richard Bonynge did not "endure" a life with a diva. First of all, Joan was about the furthest thing from a typical "Diva". She was unpretentious and unassuming - she connected with all of those around her no matter their station. But I certainly agree with your thanks to Richard. He deserves much credit for Joan's (it bothers me to be as familiar as calling her "Joan") success. And I also agree with your comment about Joan's recordings. She remains the single most recorded opera singer ever!

Better late than never. Thank you very much for having posted this video and left it her. One thing and another I was just today led to this video although I have been with youtube since it began. In any case I am very grateful for the opportunity to have seen this tribute to one of the world's and opera's greatest singers of any century. I love Australia and its people and what this reminded me of was that Dame Joan was in every sense the best of what Australians are. It is wonderful to know that she in her personal life remained down to earth. I had the uncanny good fortune to meet her personally at a performance of the opera Giulio Cesare with Jennifer Larmore singing Cleopatra at Montreux. It was an odd thought that occurred to me as I was seated quite near to Dame Joan and her husband Richard. I wondered what it was like for her to listen to this young woman sing the part of Cleopatra which she herself had sung so brilliantly. When we met at the interval I did not ask this question :-) However she was charming, gracious and appreciative. Again thank you for this video which I'd have never otherwise had the opportunity to see.

Thanks for uploading this memorial. I come to an awareness of Opera, as many others, from the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles. I had known of La Stupenda, but not what, who or why she was so important to Opera and further to voice appreciation. I am aware enough to know that modern musicions, voicalists and productions owe a great deal to artists (artiste) as she, Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, etc. for bringing Opera to wider audiance. The partnership between she and Richard Bonygne bought a change from Bel Canto works being "Butterfly" works to The grand works that every soprano wishes to attempt. Some Will succeed. Many will not... By the by, it might be nice to return to "Butterfly" productions in voice and staging if we can avoid being thumped over the head with The Message of operatic storylines at the expence of the music and voice... Either that or I need to avoid rabbit hole of KZfaqs binging. Love Joan Sutherland

Dear Ole, Please don't feel bad in her calling her Joan,as you say she was the most un#diva like diva that there ever was.She had a wicked and at times racous sense of humour.Always remembered names(including mine)and was kind and intuitive.Richard is actually quite a shy and retiring person, but was the one that wore the trousers! It was a true partnership, and all the operas Richard found and produced,he did out of love for Joan and her voice,in that order.Richard did not(as you say) endure Joan

@ yortko1. Dieskau did most of those lieders on record. That's not opera. Dieskau did not sing all those complete live operas as Dame Joan's did. Many of those live operas were recorded. Dame Joan from 1952-1989 are a lot of recorded complete live and studio operas well over 200 Lucia alone. Dieskau did not sing as much as 4 times a week like dear Joan did. He may sing one concert every few weeks.
