From the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House, Joan Sutherland, with pianist Richard Bonynge, perform a recital on August 9th 1974. The programme consisted of the following repertoire:

I love me some early-mid 70’s Joan! To me, her color, tone, and vibrato had the perfect balance, while still maintaining the fluidity and flexibility from her earlier years. Stunning

Like Rosa Ponselle before her, Joan Sutherland decided not to do a big overblown "Farewell" at The Met in New York. She sang a program very similar to this on a Sunday afternoon in March, 1989 --- lots of obscure songs, rare repertoire, several languages, all with Bonynge at the piano. Charming, beautiful, still a great singer, she sang her heart out for hours --- and then she was gone! I miss her every day and this concert reminds me how much we have lost. We’re used to being amazed by Dame Joan but this is really something else. She is in such good voice here and throughout the whole performance and in all sorts of repertoires. Singing in all five languages of opera too. The highlights for me are the Ponchielli and the French melodies but the rest of the recital is also nothing short of stunning. Many many thanks for sharing this gem of a concert!

First, I'm a HUGE Sutherland fan. However, she obviously took this recital to several cities, because I heard it (every song) in the Bay Area in the early 70's. I was so disappointed because I was expecting a coloratura spectacular and all we got was these art songs, which, perhaps because of where I was singing, I couldn't understand a word of. Yes, the singing is spectacular and I appreciate it so much more now because many are, in fact, sublime.

Yes, in some US cities, Joan received negative reviews for her recitals on account of the programming, not the quality of the singing. I think she was so much more the artist for presenting prgrams of this quality and variety with some spectacular coloratura thrown in here and there.

Thank you Sir for uploading this gem. The sound is absolutely amazing (Better than a lot of her studio recordings, if I may be permitted to say). And what a fantastic programme 😁😁💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
