The crisis in Venezuela continues to ravage the the country, with the United States and many Western allies now recognizing opposition leader Juan Guiado as interim president. But Nicolas Maduro, who has led the country since 2013, is fighting back. Venezuelan-American comedian Joanna Hausmann, who among other things is a correspondent for "Bill Nye Saves the World," talked to Cheddar about the situation, and how she's using her platform to bring awareness to the crisis.

Why do people outside Venezuela have such strong opinions of what's good for Venezuelans? It seems to me that the mass exodus and economic collapse (however nuance that discussion may be) is a clear sign of mismanagement and corruption.

Morenito Moreno you are blatantly ignoring the fact that there is a humanitarian crisis is venezuela and the Venezuelans actively asking for help. You are also ignoring how many other countries are against the maduro regime. You are also ignoring the fact that colombia is also asking for help because there is a migration and border crisis. Also lets not forget that the US most likely will not get involved besides imposing sanctions because too many people in government will stop any effort to help any further. The American media and americans who have no clue what it is like to live in venezuela, flee venezuela, and still have family in venezuela are using our country as a pawn for their political aspirations and that is just wrong. Stop believing everything you hear.

Juan Guaidó is the President of the Congress and that’s why he was the one to take the Interim President of Venezuela’s duties, also the Dictator is no longer the Legitimate President since 1/10/19 since the 2018 elections were not legal, not only because of lack of opposition but because the elections were promoted by a paralell congress and supreme court created by Maduro not elected by the people. Also the US is the only one that has always paid for our oil, all of this countries supporting Maduro has received it almost for free or completely for free, like Cuba.

And why does that rule out Maduro as a dictator? Defending authoritarianism is defending a genocide. Be it Pinochet, Maduro or Mao, they all have in common one thing: totalitarianism. Venezuela is a country that should be ruled by democratically-elected government, not by a dictator. We do not want him. I dare you to come here, to my country, and see with your own eyes how people are literally starving because of the mismanagement of this government. They only care for the cubans and their well being. And no, I do not defend Carlos Andrés Perez nor what happened with Venezuelan politics since the 70's, because the oil wasn't well invested, but this regime has gone way too far for way too long doing things wrong and killing protesters.

@@MrMarkopetrov I do not know what your country is (but I am interested in knowing so that I can understand you better). Where are you from? Certainly the US has done things wrong, they aren't gods. But wanting to take Maduro out is not a mistake, it would be our salvation. We've been invaded by cubans, all of our resources are for cubans and for the government "enchufados" while people are starving. Things were done wrong since the 70's in my country, the oil wasn't well invested and the coffee and cocoa industry wasn't developed... but at least it was in the name of venezuelan people: there were scholarships and public education has always been a thing in here, since the 1800's (with Guzman Blanco). The economy wasn't the best but it wasn't as ugly as it is now. Right now the only thing that matters to the government is drugs and Cuba. (Maduro's nephews were arrested in the US for selling drugs, we call them "los narcosobrinos"). We are foreigners in our own country, we've been conquered by cubans and russians. And we want them out, so we can be ruled by venezuelans and for venezuelans again. (Maduro is colombian, born in Cucuta, which goes against our constitution and law)

Not so easy lad. We don't have a second amendment like in the US and most civilians are unarmed. The so-called "colectivos" are a paramilitary force trained by colombian guerrilla ELN and FARC, and also by cuban and russian mercenaries. Maduro's government is sending this troops on to unarmed civilians to kill them and causing terror and control against us. This fucking pig is also taking sentenced prisoners (murders, rapists, etc.) out of prison, training them and giving them war weaponry to make sure humanitarian aid can't enter through Venezuelan-Colombian border and Venezuelan-Brazilian border. People are killed by the dozens and the National Guard and the rest of Venezuela's Army can't lead a coup to turn down Maduro because they're infiltrated by the Cuban Army. Maybe you don't understand this but former President Hugo Chávez let Cuba bring troops to Venezuela I think to protect himself for any attempt of coup. There are basically cuban spies in every military fortification. So you think Venezuelans can figure this out by ourselves? We tried, we tried for almost 20 years and we couldn't. And is because this regime is lead by drug dealers, terrorist cells, guerrilla and other crime organizations that represent not only a real danger to the people of Venezuela but for the rest of the continent. Venezuelan people are kidnapped by this regime because they don't live of alone. Now you understand why everyone is against Maduro but we can't kick him out without international help?
