High neuroticism, low self-esteem. He probably learned at an early age being seen can be dangerous, whether it was being bullied, maybe a less than great home life or something else. It's relatable though and I think that's where his charisma comes from. If you notice in interviews, speeches and what not he seems almost adversarial. He's already playing defense before someone takes a stab at him because he expects it to happen and is afraid of a blow to his self-esteem. He also deflects compliments because they might feel fake to him or undeserved and it really conflicts with his internal image of himself. It's kind of sad in a way despite his success and obvious brilliance in what he does that he still lacks a lot of confidence.

Not being able to take compliments comes from a place of fear and having an expectation that others will automatically hate you when they meet you.

The latest version of Joaquin (he's changed) is one of the fewest actors who s deeply sincere and aware of planet's problem. When he received the Oscar for the Joker, he didn't bring his "persona" on stage. He didn't bothered to focus on himself, or to start thanking to all the people who contributed to his prize, etc. Very, very few actors are capable of that. His ego is very quiet or absent...and you can see that by the sparkle in his eyes. I want a buddy like this.

Whether he likes compliments or not the fact remains, that he is a genius actor.

Most artists dont like compliments. They tolerate them but a simple "cool" is much better received than being fawned over.

His character talks to me. We have the same wounds. Some ADHD, some imposter syndrome, rejection syndrome, some betrayals. Many, actually.

Joaquin is one of the nicest, most genuine actors (and most genuinely odd humans in the truest since of the term) that have come out of HollyWeird in decades. Had the privilege of meeting him once back before Joker was even thought of, but he was still an A-lister at the time. He inquired as to what kind of cigarette I was enjoying (I rolled my own when I smoked - just quit for the 50-11th time 9 days ago, fingers X'd) and I told him it was Danish Export rolled in Rizzla licorice papers. He seemed quite interested, so I offered him one if he'd like to try something new and take a walk on the wild side haha. He said sure, offered to pay me for rolling him one (I refused ofc) - then, we enjoyed ours together and talked for about 5 minutes tops. I never asked him about his work, nor he mine. It was an understood thing that I knew who he was - I introduced myself, and when he reciprocated, I just went along with it like I didn't know him from Adam. Having worked professionally in the entertainment industry since 2010, I came to learn long ago that artists / musicians / actors, etc. - especially B listers and above, truly appreciate being treated like normal people. Never asked for an autograph from anyone I've worked with or met, but typically if you have kids, they'll offer to sign something for them, or they'll just have some signed head shots they leave out in the green room for the crew to snag if they want. Not always, but often. Anyway, back to the subject at-hand; he had more than enough clout to be a total & complete prick if he so desired, and it would be forgiven by all due to his status and film credits if he had opted to go that route. It was clear to me that he was quite tired already, and seemed like they'd been at it all night. It was only 8:22am when this occurred. But, as is typical in Hollywood / the arts & entertainment industries, that's usually how it goes. It's the actors / musicians / artists on a come-up that are prickish & cunty asf for no good reason the overwhelming majority of the time....like, as in ~80% of the time, I shitteth you not...-eth. I've been very disappointed after meeting certain artists I'd really appreciated and was a fan of - prior to working with them, that is. But Joaquin did not disappoint - and he gave me a wonderful compliment regarding my taste in tobacco and how well the licorice papers paired with that specific cut, along with the quality of my technique. He was just a really nice guy, and had very good energy from what I experienced anyway.
