Hello , From a retired millwright / fabricator , one of the things that I found enjoyable and reassuring was the knowledge that with my skill set one could go to work anywhere in the world , in almost any industry for good money and with OT say around 25% , one could expect at least 100K per yr. . The more one applies themself the more OT gets heaped on ya , believe me 7 /12 are common ( great way to save money ,because you are to tired to spend it ) but they really wear you down so be careful wth OT especially if you have family. Others have already mentioned trade schools and or military service, both offer good choices , because without knowledge or experience getting past the HR dept is next to impossible. Once you do get in keep taking classes ,say you start out as a weldor , take classes on blueprint , or machining and other metal forming basics or electrical controls and motor installations , pumps etc , dont stop , the more you learn the more $ you will be worth . In conclusion being a millwright/ fabricator is in my view the best of all the trades open to anyone who wants to live a life full of learning and satisfaction. Carry on young'uns

Only a couple things you need to. Mention, it can be a very dirty job and sometimes heavy manual labor. Also good communication is a must, you will be almost most certainly be always working with someone else and not always be able to choose who you work with. Be versatile and learn to work with everyone, everybody has various skill levels.

Daniel Sweet are you in this field now ? I have some questions but I am 42 and worked hard mechanic jobs my hole life and have a lot of experience with many things but I have to work at a job that's doable after two spine surgeries and metal inplants but don't have big limits but do have some with holding heavy to me stuff out at arms reach but my knowledge definitely makes up for it can you please give me some honest insight of what I need to know and be expected to do

@@garycsfunlife Depends on the industry you work in and how the company does there Standard Operating Procedures. Food Industry requires you to use food grade lubricants and you must know TIG for stainless steel. Widget Manufacturers mostly need knowledge in PLC and conveyors and sensors. Chemicals and oil industry mostly require people to be proficient in pumps and compressors and know fluids and many sort of valves and combination of non destructive testing. Usually lifting anything heavier than your body weight at a certain height , you will use a forklift, scissor lift, chain block, hoist and pulleys. If you are going to install a motor for example in a ventilation duct and the motor is 250 lbs you will need to very clever about using clamps and pulleys and know how to estimate loads in the building structure you are about to attach it to. At work, the best maintenance technician is the one who can figure out the safest and fastest way to do things. Time is money and equipment is money.

Some other technical trades are also Electromechanical Technician, Industrial Mechanic, Instrument Mechanic, Mechanical Technologist, Plant Technician, Process Technician, and Maintenance Technician. They are pretty much the same thing, just some schools have slightly different courses. What is not mentioned here is that industry and company is what usually dictates what you concentrate on, such as whether you are working on valves, or pumps and compressors, or electrical wiring on panels, or field device wiring, or plc programming, or VFD programming, or machining, and so on. Your company dictates what you will specialize in. So if you want to be really an all around person better pick a small company because you do not need to specialize. If you are in a huge company , you will specialize more or less. Also expect to be on call for breakdowns like 3 am or when you are on day off. Some people might be scheduled on those times but you never know and sometimes the company needs as much help as they can get for example to set up new machines or when some people do not know how to do x but knows how to do y, and you know y but not x.

Good question and is one I wish I had guidance on when I was younger. I would suggest start at local JC/CC and knock out basic classes to start like math, english or humanities and in your off time explore what else the school offers in regards to the trades. After a career in the military I got my A.S. in machining and I now want to get into being a millwright specializing lathes, mills and grinders. College is not for everyone but I will also say that higher education is, but if you go you should be able to get an internship with a local company. One last suggestion is do a job search for your ideal job as for location and pay, but also look at the job description then cater your education towards that. In all cases, I will always suggest more education, even if it is a class here and a class there.

She doesn't look like one. And yes, I do mean that you picture a certain thing when you think of a millwright and it's not her. Although men are more often interested in things and women are more often interested in people, the bell curves do overlap.

As a millwright and a welder I promise you she can't do 90% of the jobs out there... some millwright jobs are easy but most are hard even for most men and most men quit the class after a few weeks. Then once they hit the workforce realise this is way to hard for me and go back to school. Us millwrights are a man's man type of guy.
