The term wizard can be thrown around a lot. Wizards make magic, can create life from the ether, and conjure things that are beautiful and sometimes monstrous. There aren’t many wizards out in the world these days, but I know of one by name and that name is Rick Baker. Rick Baker is a master of the monsters and a wizard of special effects. He’s an artist and a visionary who made some of the most memorable creatures and effects to grace movie and TV screens of the last few decades. He’s also an unabashed Monster Kid who has never lost his love and fascination for the classics.
On todays episode of What Happened To This Horror Celebrity we’re meeting a wizard of the wicked and magician of monsters (no really, he’s here to talk to us) as we reveal what happened to Rick Baker.

Rick has always been a hero of mine. First heard of him on an episode of "Movie Magic" back in the day. Rick will always be the man.

Baker had a hand in giving us one of the best "King Kong" movies. Not only his makeup, but HIS direct performance as the ape categorizes that movie as COLOSSAL in my view.

The special effects guys and stunt guys are my favorite people in movies cause they make the magic look real. Actors gotta make you think it's real but it's the artists who make it look real. Rick Baker is a top tier master of the craft.

Baker is the finest artist, Savini Pioneered Splatter effects, KNB went from small movies to doing more work than anyone, and Stan Winston was a go getter who hired the best artists on earth to bring his ideas to life.

He was worried that CGI was going to replace Makeup and practical character effects, as it was slowly changing movie history.

It wasn't changing movie history, but rather the industry moving forward. History is THE PAST, which cannot be changed. Baker is worried about the future, which isn't history. I'd explain further, but left my hand puppets in storage.

"Track Of The Moon Beast" needs to be fully restored & presented fully uncut for a new release on DVD/Blu-ray. Every version that's currently available on VHS/DVD seems to be taking from the same source, a dark murky TV print that's missing most of Rick Baker's make up & gore effects. The movie isn't great by any means, but it still deserves better than what it's received so far.

In watching all those clips & stills it was striking to see a cg werewolf hand for one second, from the 2010 Wolfman. It looked so immediately fake. Meanwhile all the other stuff looks good, looks real. One of the standout moments for me was the Beauty & the Beast segment. He nailed that assignment. Make it a monster yet attractive.

I'm affectionate for Baker's work on An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Michael Jackson's Thriller, and Hellboy 2004. Those were my four favorites out of his entire filmography. But I was surprised there are those who defend the 1976 remake of King Kong. Sure, the climax didn't age well(regarding the World Trade Center), but it's fine if y'all defend it and think King Kong 2006 is hot garbage. What a legend. 🥰

It was funny the look on Rick's face when she mentioned "Saw". I'm not as old as Rick, but I have been a SPFX Makeup Artist for over 35 years, and can tell you that people who grew up when we did, have no interest in "Torture Porn". H's probably never even seen a scene from any of these new films.

Not to be pedantic, but I will. Technically, the first Oscar for makeup was given to John Chambers for Planet of the Apes. But to be fair, that was a special Oscar, for that one year, due to the makeup Oscar hadn't been added to the list yet.

The man won the 1st ever Oscar for Best Makeup and deservedly so among his other excellent wins & nominations. I hope he is enjoying his retirement after such a distinguished career

I don't suppose you could redo the whole video with a different narrator.. This was a shame because i was looking forward to watching this when i got the notification!
