What was great about Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the great use of sound. Creepy sounds were more effective than any gory effects on camera.

I remember seeing this movie for the first time on VHS, and something about the lower film grade and quality made it even creepier

I first saw this in college. I just sat there in stunned shock at what I had just seen, when the screen made that quick cut to black at the end.

I can never get enough of this film!! Honestly, the older I get, the more I think this might be the best horror film ever made, even over Halloween, the Thing and Exorcist.

My story is similar to yours, but a neighbor friend let us see it in her house! We rented horror films every weekend, and so when I saw this (at 11 years old), I was quite shaken. So I bought the DVD, and since then, it’s been my all time favorite film. Also, when that video store closed, the owner gave me the copy of TCM.

I literally lol'd when you mentioned your first viewing was in a church...i first saw it when i was 12 and pet sitting a neighbours cat...i could only watch it in 15 minute sessions because i was so terrified but i got through it by the time they got back lol

Did you know that despite the title, only one person was killed by chainsaw in this movie and it was done at night not even daytime where you can see the gore

This movie is indeed very scary. Case in point: in the 80s, my older brother played it loud because he had hearing problems. Even though my grandmother was in another part of the house, she ended up going to the hospital because all the screaming affected her badly. To be clear, she did not watch it -- only listened. She was OK in the end, but it reminds me of the stories of people signing wavers before watching a horror movie in the theatre!

I love every frame of this film. Same goes for Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse. I was fortunate enough to meet Tobe in January 1995. R.I.P. Master of Horror.

I have learned a lot about this movie over time and didn't know the story about him needing to be paid in full before hand and seeing the check in his pocket! That definitely tells you a lot about the production. I am glad you shared your story about seeing it for the first time. I have an incredibly similar story about The Terminator.

True story. my family knew Ed Gien and he took my dad and others to the drive in movies all the time. My grandpa lived across the street from the hardware store where Worden's hardware store was, its a True Value today. My grandpa was the one who bought Hogan's bar after she went missing and my brother in law has the bar that came from there. And my grandpa was in the time magazine where the story broke about Ed. All of this is true. I love telling the stories. I mean my mom would take me up to my grandma's house two weeks out of ever summer to visit. I've been in that hardware store so many times. Then when the book came out by the judge who did the trial, my mom had a copy of it when it first came out. When i found that i would take it to school to show everyone.

This film is an absolute masterpiece. What I truly love about it is how it almost feels like a documentary with the way it was shot. It's so dirty, so grimey, that it truly feels plausible that everything in it is real and can happen, even Grandpa lol. And the way it ends so ubruptly is perfect after all that madness. It just leaves the viewer shocked, drained, speechless, etc. The cast and crew really did suffer for their art as making it was an absolutely terrible experience for all involved due to the heat and the extremely long hours it took to shot.

I never got to see the original Texas chainsaw massacre movie until last year. It’s definitely one of the best films of its genre. The original still holds up with the 2003 remake

I REMEMBER GETTING THIS MOVIE ON DVD AT VIRGIN MEGASTORE BACK IN 2008 AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. LEATHERFACE IS WITHOUT A DOUBT KING OF ALL HORROR MOVIE VILLIANS.

I saw this when I was about 6 years old in 86 and it wasn't just scary to me it was disturbing. As a adult I love it now especially the chaos throughout and the chaos in the end when leather face is swinging his chainsaw around when the girl escapes.

I watched this on VHS early 80's in my Nan's house (my uncle living there had rented out this and Airplane!). Naturally sisters aged 9 and 12 year old, we wanted to watch the horror. We had never seen anything like this before. So in my mind this is the ultimate classic. This later went on to be banned in the UK, along with other titles such as The Evil Dead (another fantastic movie). The actors in this low budget movie, did such a professional job, considering the harsh conditions required to work in.

The original is still bloody good and R.I.P Marilyn Burns and Gunnar Hansen.

In the late 80s, a local. PBS station in Los Angeles would show "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Night of the Living Dead" every Halloween, uncut, uncensored and no commercials. Watching these movies while handing out Halloween candy became a yearly tradition.

The true classics will always live on... I was an 80s kid so I grew up with Freddy and Jason and the serious gore flicks of the 80s and the like, but nothing scared the shit outta me like 2 movies, this and The Exorcist. I think what makes TCM scarier is that in those 80s slasherrs you rooted for Freddy or Jason or whoever, you knew they'd die in the end but you wanted to see them kill. In TCM the family is so scary and detestable that you can't help but be terrified for the victims and you desperately want them to live. If you wanna know more of the ridiculousness that went on during the making I recommend reading Chain Saw Confidential written by Leatherface himself, Gunner Hansen, as it goes far more in depth into some of the crazier goings-on on set

It's often remembered as one of the most bloody, gory movies ever and yet there's not even that much gore in it. There's more blood on Sally in the end than in the movie overall. Always thought that was interesting.

The hitchhiker is the most uncomfortable person to be around or see on screen. That actor was great!

1st time I saw it was at a drive-in triple bill in the 70's, with Meatballs & Up In Smoke. What a great, wacky alcohol & pot-smoked night that I'll never forget. Still don't remember driving home, though, but I made it home alive.

I remember watching this on a grainy VHS videotape and was truly terrified. You think you have witnessed a bloodbath on screen, but you haven`t. The clever editing and cinematography are magnificent. I`m still amazed that Tobe tried to get a PG rating. That was never going to happen!

The first time I watched this movie I thought there would be alot of gore and blood. What surprised me and was 10 times more disturbing was the weird sounds and creepy atmosphere of the film. That and just the rollercoaster ride of that ending when all hell breaks loose. You really root for the last survivor as she tries to escape this relentless nightmare.

I remember growing up in the 80s and hearing stories of it was only available to rent for a year or two in the UK then completely Banned, if you got certain horror fanzines or magazines there would be private ads in the back with people selling banned or rare films they’d copied onto vhs , I got my auntie to get me Texas chainsaw with fight for your life on the same tape for 30 quid , quite a rough copy but I still adored it , was my prize possession as a 12 year old lol

My parents allowed me to watch all kinds of horror movies. Jason, Freddy, Chucky, Scream, Puppet Master. and even some of the Return of the Living dead movies. But Leatherface was the one they felt uncomfortable with. After watching it again fully as an adult, I can understand why. This movie felt a lot more real than those ones.

Summers here in Texas can be oppressively uncomfortable. Walking out the door feels like opening an oven and that wave of hot air hits ya can just sap all the joy out of your life. The first time I saw it was in 88 I think. The local mom and pop video shop was typically my go-to for films but I recall they wouldn’t let me rent it so I went to another spot, a gas station. Yeah, back then some gas stations also rented movies to locals and truckers who were parking for the night. Well they not only had TCM but also Creepers so I rented them both.

The one that actually kept me up back then was the movie Criminally Insane with Fat Ethel oddly enough.

That´s how I watched lots of horror movies as a kid. A local video club that did not care about ages.

EVERY TIME I watch this movie it reminds me of the gorilla tactics of filmmaking to which we will NEVER see again, absolute SAVAGE.....And downright terrifying the more I see it.

I don't remember where I saw it first, probably on beta-max in the very early 80's, and it's truly disturbing, but not the scariest. The Exorcist is still the scariest movie to me. But that falls under what I believe in. But great video. Thank you for that and you childhood memories.

I grew up in the 80s watching horror. Nothing phased me. On Halloween night in 1998, my best friend and I rented this from Blockbuster. I was 18 and under the impression that I couldn’t be affected by horror, but I was proven wrong. Something about this movie made me feel physically sick. I definitely believe this is one of the most gruesome movies ever made and the lack of gore is kind of shocking.

Its my fav horror movie. Yes I feel like it is one of the scariest films of its time. I grew up in Texas in the aftermath of this film, we all grew up in the shadow of this movie, the legend, the lore, stories that it was all true and that it DID happen. That left many of us kind of uneasy. Well I can speak for my self… it left me uneasy. And I had not even seen the film. I had nightmares that i was in a house with all the furniture covered in white sheets being stalked by leatherface outside. I remember the dream because it was so vivid. I do remember being a bit obsessed by the movie. One day at a party, someone rented Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 from a gas station. We watched it, it was brutal, and gory and more than I had seen, since all the horror Id watched up until that point was edited for TV. But after finishing it… and it sunk in. I liked it. Love that film to this day. A year or two after that I watched it on a tiny black and white TV. And not the whole thing either. Finally later I got the courage to watch it in its entirety. I now watch it often, once or twice a year. I really feel liked the detail put in to the production is at a genius level. Such a great film. I don’t live too far from the original filming locations here in Texas. If I had tons of money I would buy the land back and recreate the location with the house and all as a tourist attraction. It is horror film royalty, slowly disappearing to construction and encroachment.

I think scariest movie of all time is subjective as it depends on what really gets to you personally. TCSM is definitely horrific, but I'm more disturbed by movies like The Dark and the Wicked.

Great movie, one of the all time great horrors that i got into after watching Halloween funnily enough, for me its not as highly regarded as it should be but i personally love it.

Scariest movie of all time? Years ago I took my nephews(both young at the time)to see the Jim Carrey vehicle “How the grinch Stole Christmas “. I wanted to gouge my eyes out and go deaf. I haven’t let children pick the movie to see since then. Scariest experience of my life.

I love your story about your first time viewing this film. It automatically made me think of a story from my life involving a first time at a church. I'm not trying to be rude or crash or even trying to brag or anything like that, I'm just trying to connect a story. So please forgive me everyone. But, my first threesome was in the parking lot of a church.😂😅😮😊 It's such an interesting story to hear about someone sing this film for the first time in that way. I wasn't allowed to watch rated r horror films growing up as a child until a certain age. I'm only 35, but I was originally raised up on the old black-and-white universal horror films, and some of the hammer films and stuff like that. Some other things that were probably a little bit more mature were peppered in from time to time like house from nineteen eighty-five. But that's not a really bad movie for a kid to see. But I do remember that being one of the first film's that really scared me. Anyway, I digress. I wasn't allowed to really watch any kind of violence or type films until I was about nine or ten years old. And that's still really early but it was a different time, LOL. The 90s were something spectacular that I wish everyone could experience as a child. Strangely enough, it was quite some time after I'd started watching r-rated horror films until I saw the original Texas chainsaw massacre. The very first TCM film I ever saw was the next generation. And I know everyone hates that movie but it's one of my favorites, honestly. It's such an underrated TCM movie. It really deserves a lot more praise. Especially compared to the crap that we've gotten here lately. The last couple of TCM films have just been terrible. At least next generation had the balls to be different. Say what you want about Leatherface in drag, but I think the image and even the thought of a mentally deranged grown-ass man dressed in women's clothing and wearing skin nearly head-to-toe chasing you with a chainsaw and screaming at the top of his lungs the entire time is pretty nightmare-inducing. Where are horror fans, right? Well, I think that's pretty horrific. And I'm a fan of that. Once again, I digress. I didn't see the original Texas chainsaw massacre for the first time until I was about eleven or twelve years old. 2000 or 2001. Rented it from the video store and loved it and we watched it three or four times before I returned the VHS. Even at such a young age, I realized that I was viewing a masterpiece. My taste throughout the years have fluctuated just like anyone else's, but the quality of Texas chainsaw massacre has always remained. Anyway, I just love your story about renting and viewing this film for the first time. It just makes me nostalgic. This was an amazing video. One of the best I've ever seen on the channel.

love Texas Chainsaw 1-4 the original in a sense is a film of it’s time but, History repeats itself so it being a sleazy grindhouse 70’s film adds more organic charm to it (It’s the perfect example catching lightning in a bottle) both Night of the Living Dead & Texas Chainsaw are ground zero for both indie film making and modern horror both are priceless and so important to pop culture and society in general!
