The Blade Trilogy: Revisiting Wesley Snipes's Iconic Daywalker

As far as superhero movies go, very few are quite as important as the Blade trilogy. The fact is, when the franchise began in 1998, superhero films were largely seen as a joke. Batman and Robin put an end to the DC film series in a major way, and Bryan Singer’s X-Men was still a ways off. New Line took a big risk making a movie out of Marvel’s half-vampire hero, with them even going so far as to turn it into an R-rated vehicle for action hero Wesley Snipes. Before it came out, people assumed it would just be a routine New Line action movie, in the vein of Mortal Kombat or Spawn, but it wound up being a significant hit. It was followed by an even bigger sequel, Guillermo del Toro’s Blade II, before the franchise case to a premature end with Blade: Trinity.
In this deep dive, we take a chronological look at the franchise, from its early days as a mid-level New Line movie, through it becoming a franchise and, eventually, going disastrously awry. With a Marvel reboot on the way (eventually) now is the perfect time to revisit this iconic series.
Which Blade movie is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

What I loved most of Wesley Snipes being Blade was that despite how badass he looks with sunglasses on, whenever he takes them off, those are the most pure, mercy, melancholy pair of eyes underneath.

So much was made of "Black Panther" being "the first time I saw a superhero who looked like me" and it became such a major event in African-American culture. Yet so few people mentioned these films, and that one of the first really successful superhero movies, the one that, arguably, convinced other studios to take the chance, starred a black man. Wesley Snipes deserves a lot of credit for doing this character justice.

It's the same BS like all those vacant-headed girl boss "actresses" saying that "it's so refreshing to see a woman in a leading role for a change" completely forgetting that Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor existed DECADES ago! And even they weren't the first. Hollywood just loves patting itself on the back for being so original while shitting on everything that came before.

You're not alone. It wasn't marketed as a "superhero" or "comic book" movie, and if you weren't a comic fan in the 90s, then you probably had no idea who Blade was. It was just a really fun horror/action movie starring Wesley Snipes.

I think the superhero movies back then did a better job, it have that risk-factor i grew up with, today, though i don't like superhero movies, the effects that too much of a front-stage, the writing is sub-par etc, there really isn't that much substance as movies, not all aspects was bad, there was enjoyable moments, but without that risk-factor and play it safe, they tend to carry too much of the same sub-plot.

The first two movies made EVERYTHING for comic books to be adapted seriously. And, people credit Christian Bale's _Batman,_ knowing Snipes not only did an R-rated movie first for comicbooks (That was HIGHLY successful), but was transcendent for the film industry.

Blade 1 was better. Blade 2 is not a movie to enjoy watching over and over. After a while you realize some of the excitement was the fact that you were glad to see a sequel that lived up to the original, which was and is extremely rare. The Blade films updated/revalitized vampire movies, the genre was still stuck romanticizing vampires.Blade made vampire's organized into families/clans,even modern day business men.As you saw in this film series the vampires had wealth and were smart to not let humans know they exist. Also Blade and the special forces vampire had mad fighting skills, something not seen in old vampire movies.

When I found out that Luke Goss, the drummer from my sister's favorite '80s band _BROS_ was going to infiltrate and play the lead vampire villain Nomak in a comic franchise I loved, I was mortified. After seeing his performance in Blade II, I was floored. He knocked it out of the park. The delivery of his final line before his death, _"It hurts...it hurts no more"_ was pitch perfect. One thing I would add about Blade II: Luke Goss as Nomak made an incredibly sympathetic villain. When he and del Toro work together (like when he played Nuada in Hellboy 2), they create a villain who's fleshed out, and you can definitely see what motivates them. And kinda say, "He's not exactly wrong, y'know?"

Blade and the doctor could have gotten together off screen even just once and resulted in her having a son. Since Blade ages like a human, Wesley Snipes would be perfect to come back. This would give us older Blade fans a chance to see the original day walker again. I would really love that, and the time period just about fits for him to be Blade's son. What do anyone else think?🤔

The best Batman stories are the ones where he isn't a cold stoic character who doesn't feel much outside of his motivation to avenge their loved ones. They're the ones that show him as a real person who cares very deeply about other people. You don't have such an expansive cast of characters (taking in orphans, philanthropic endeavours as a billionaire, compassion for villains, founding multiple teams, mentoring young heroes) by not caring about people. One of the worst things about Batman on film for me is how almost every director has ignored those elements and created a perception of Batman as a miserable loner. Yes he's experience trauma, but in the best comics and the 90s animated series (for me the best non-comics interpretation) Bruce Wayne is a fleshed out person who wants to live a life and wants to be part of the world. So many interpretations of Batman these are like a PG version of the Punisher, just a cold vengeful asshole and I hate it.

Cool. Thanks for this. I love Blade and Westley as Blade. Blade II is amazing. I guess I'll go rewatch Blade Trinity and see if how i feel about it. I think I was 16 when it came out and the last time I saw it. Ive rewatched the first 2 several times but not that one

I don't think they expected the movie to do anywhere near as well as it did since they killed the Lamagra first.

What was great about the original Blade was the worldbuilding itself. It shows us the modern city life we live in and introduces the inner workings of that world hidden right in front of our eyes. It says "Hey, the life you live, the streets you walk, the job you work at, there is a secret layer you can not comprehend". Alex Proyas had a similar theme with The Crow as well as Dark City Goyer was also a part of, and the same theme continues in movies like John Wick, Constantine, or Hellboy. In Blade, pure blood vampires are aristocrats whereas the made ones are like spoiled rich kids of the urban night life. Both parties are representations of the filthy rich percentage of society, but the aristocrats are traditional, elite and try to adhere the rules of the system they shaped in order to keep things going. The brats, however, don't like any rules, night life belongs to them, they go through bodies like there's no tomorrow, they love the power they have and want to use it to its full extent. Just like real rich kids. Anyways, it was a great take on the vicious, ravenous modern life where we live to work to make our bosses richer and we serve even when we are clubbing and having time off.

TRIVIA NOTE: Wesley Snipes originally wanted to play Black Panther. He discussed it for years with John Singleton, who would've directed. But Wes got caught up in the Blade Trilogy, and then Singleton passed away. Also ,there was the matter of Snipes' arrest for tax evasion.

Loved these movies and even the TV series. I seem to recall Wesley ended up in some trouble and that sucked but he was great in these movies and I wish him well. Looking forward to Blade in the MCU!

I've would've liked you to talk a bit more about Parker Posey. She was the indie film queen and I think this was her first major studio film. I enjoyed her performance in this film. Yes, Dracula was a waste of space.

Had the pleasure of seeing Blade 2 in the cinema and it was fantastic : original movie was good - as is "Trinity" - too bad it didn't have another sequel (perhaps a couple) : either way they're good entertainment!.

A friend of mine said that Blade took "The Suck" out of Marvel movies. Neither Spiderman or X-Men had come out. You had an unreleased Captain America and Fantastic 4 movies. Only some made for TV Hulk movies were halfway decent. Pretty much all Marvel movies were mediocre or worse until Blade.

Wesley Snipes martial arts training prior to this film made the fight scenes real stand out performances. Some scenes had to be reshot because the speed at which he executed his moves was so fast that the camera didn't pick them up. So he had to do them again at a slower pace so that the viewer would be able to appreciate his technique.

I like the blade films, especially the first. At the time if felt so fresh when you compared it to all the other films around at the time. Though the 2 and 3 had flaws, i thought they were at least trying to do something new rather than a lazy rehash. What I also wanted to comment on was your 'Final Destination' first 3. I'm not a horror fan, but I have a fascination with horror. I have watched far more material about them than actual horror films. I really enjoyed the video.

I loved the first Blade film. It was unique and refreshing as an R rated superhero action film. I didn't like Blade 2 as much when it released but have liked it more with time. Trinity still sucks to me. Dracula was so lame and Blade felt sidelined so much.

The studio wanted the human vampire hunters to have their own spinoff films, that's why Blade was sidelined in his own movie.

An old friend of mine used to be the Manager at a local theater back in the day and when blade 2 came out a lifesize blade cardboard cutout was sent to theaters to put up in their lobby. Anyways, when blade 2 left the theater my friend took the cutout home and put it in the corner of his front room and blade used to scare the shit out of people when they saw him for the first time if they walked in and the lights were dim he looked pretty real lol

Luke Goss remains one of the great comic book action movie villain actors. With Blade II and Hellboy II, it's clear Del Toro sees it. Luke needs to get an invite into today's action scene, comic book or otherwise. His talents are wasted in his C- list relegation.

My biggest gripe with Trinity is that, by his own admission, that wasn't his first human. He was at over 1000 human familiars. Why did they just now have footage of him doing that? Surely there was at least one occasion where he was on a security camera or something before.

Ryan Reynolds has made a career out of playing Ryan Reynolds. A lot of our favorite movie stars have done that, from Tom Cruise to John Wayne and many, many, more. ;) They're kinda like Big Macs. Going in, you know exactly what you're gonna get.

I never think of the blade movies as superhero or MCU. They're just kick ass 90s dark edgy action movies and I love the first film. I wish we had more blade, underworld, unchi resident evil in theaters. Sadly that brand of film seems to be dead and I miss them very much.
