WTF REALLY Happened to TOMBSTONE (1993)?

For many of us, 1993’s Tombstone remains the definitive Wyatt Earp movie. The film had a tortured production history, which included the sacking of the original director Kevin Jarre and Kurt Russell’s controversial claim that it was him, not credited director George Pan Cosmatos who called the shots on the finished film. Still, we already dug into that in another episode of WTF. In this one, we’re going to look at the history that inspired the film, namely Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, the Clanton’s and the iconic gunfight at the O.K Corral. Screenwriter Kevin Jarre took some huge liberties with this one in order to craft an action-packed western that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the big-budget action flicks of the time, but what in the movie was his invention, and what was real? We dig into it in this special episode of WTF Really Happened to this Movie!

Saw TOMBSTONE the weekend it opened with my buddies. The entire theater was on its feet by the violent climax, cheering and applauding! A brilliant Western then--and still a masterpiece now...

Even though it probably never happened, that Latin-off between Doc Holiday and Johnny Ringo was peak cool. Now that I think about it, Tombstone was almost kinda like a proto-Expendables. Some of the biggest action and western stars thrown together in one awesome movie. And all of them hold their own in every scene.

This movie got me into Westerns and American History in the West so I am perfectly OK on not everything being accurate. The movie is a classic.

If you like westerns that are historical but not factual. You have to check out Louis L'Amour, particularly the Sacket Saga. Good stuff ^_^

I think the liberties taken with historical accuracy are justifiable. Otherwise, they would have had to make a trilogy (maybe even more) or a teevee mini-series.

I was a kid who hated westerns when this came out, but when I finally watched it a few years later I was shocked by how good it was. Still not my favorite genre, but man is this still one of my favorite western movies. Val Kilmer is truly great in this role.

The remake of "3:10 to Yuma" was the movie that made me appreciate westerns. I was same as at a young kid I didn't understand the appeal, but now I totally get them and have gone back to all these great Westerns that I originally missed when I was young and dumb.

It's a sad shame what happened to him later in life and his current medical condition. If you haven't watched the biographical documentary about Val's life do yourself a favor and check it out. It's very poignant but it's a very good watch.

I grew up in Valdosta (pronouced like "DOS" in MS-DOS not "Doe's") and my grandfather grew up in Doc's house. We have pictures. It's cool to have a connection to Doc.

Everybody likes Tombstone and loves Val as Doc . This movie has magic in it. As my dad used to say: it takes a whole helleva lot of blood, sweat and tears to have all this luck.

It messes with the timeline for the sake of making a movie, but other than that it stays pretty close to accurate. It takes one or two theories as fact, but that tends to happen in historical tales where we don't have all the facts.

For those interested in further information on Wyatt Earp I strongly recommend the book Inventing Wyatt Earp. It is extremely well researched and does much to debunk both the haigrophies of Earp (Like I married Wyatt Earp and Frontier Marshall) and those accounts with an ax to grind against him like The Earp Brothers of Tombstone (written by Virgil's wife Allie who despised Wyatt) and Helldorado (written by Billy Breckenridge, a follower of Sheriff Behan). For my own taste this is one of my top five favorite movies of all time and my favorite Western by far. Stupid red sashes aside it does an exceptional job of getting the costuming of the era accurate as well as the dialect that was common at the time. The casting and acting are exceptional and it is absolutely criminal that Kilmer was robbed of an Best Supporting Oscar for his role as Doc Holliday.

That is true about Mix. One of the problems with Earp is that he embellished his life story so much that it became a challenge at times to tell what was real and what was not. For example he boasted for a long time that it was he that killed Johnny Ringo. Course now it's common knowledge that Ringo probably killed himself rather than either Wyatt or Doc.

@@jamesrawlins735 Well, apparently there were no missing rounds in Ringo's guns... so the obvious question is "how did he reload his gun with another round when he was already dead?". Could have just been someone with a bone to pick and simply shot Ringo when he wasn't expecting it. But you're right I think. It likely wasn't Earp or Doc.

I can't verify whether he was at Earp's funeral or not, but John Wayne met Earp, and styled his walk and his speech after the old lawman.

@@LordBLB I looked into this a while back, and there were five rounds in Ringo's revolver -- which would be normal if it were a normal situation, or a normal person (neither of which is really true in this case). Of course, the best evidence for it being suicide is an interview with one of the coroner's jurors which was published something like thirty years after the event, which claimed that it was obvious that the bullet had passed from under Ringo's jaw and out his temple, with the bullet track still visible in the tree above his body.

Of course everybody's favorite in this movie is Doc Holliday. I do like the part when Wyatt Earp told them that I see a red sash I killed a man that wears it. So run and tell all the rest of them the run. Because hell's coming with me you see hell's coming with me.

Of course Doc is the most quoted, but Wyatt has some fantastic lines, particularly with Billy Bob Thorton. "You gonna do something or just stand there and bleed" is one of my favs.

Good recap of the actual history of Wyatt Earp and the background to Tombstone. It really doesn't matter. The movie is a great retelling of the Earp legend and Val Kilmer is dazzling as Doc Holliday. Kevin Costner's "Wyatt Earp" might come closer to history, but is dull as dishwater.

I love how "Wyatt Earp" was released like it was the most amazing western and accurate depiction of him ever, and it was hot garbage in almost everything. Then we have Tombstone, which had solid action, acceptable amounts of characters fused together, and an amazing cast. This movie will always remain a favorite of mine. Val Kilmer OWNED his scenes. (edit) regarding Johnny Ringo's death, it really was a mystery. On one hand, I believe Doc stated that he indeed killed Ringo on more than one occassion. But he was supposed to be in a court in Colorado at the time. However, it's possible that someone represented him in court, which would have his name still on it as "attending". Then there's Wyatt who didn't keep his story straight as you point out. My theory, is likely that Wyatt found him and gunned him down. No self defense, just straight up killed him. This would put him in hot water if Ringo had surrendered or was caught offguard. So... maybe Doc decided "hell I'm dying and considered a murderer anyway, I'll take the fall". Either way, it's one of the most interesting unresolved mysteries of the end days of the Wild Wild West

Wyatt Earp is far from hot garbage but it is definitely the weaker of the two movies. It's too ambitious by far in trying to cover so much of Wyatt's life instead of sticking with the Tombstone era only. Honestly if there were ever a historical figure that needed the "Deadwood Treatment" it would be Wyatt Earp and Tm Olyphant would have been a good choice for the role. He is getting too old to play it now unfortunately. That's one of the problems with Wyatt Earp the movie to tell the truth. Dennis Quaid played the role well but even though he is only a few years older than Val Kilmer he looked far older than he was in the role of Doc Holiday. And while Kurt Russell was even older than Kevin Costner, Kurt at least LOOKED the part of Wyatt. In fact the casting for Tombstone was just better from top to bottom. Sam Elliot, Powers Booth, Stephen Lang and Bill Paxton ALL turned in memorable quotable performances. If we didn't have Tombstone Wyatt Earp would have been a decent if not exactly memorable addition to the lexicon of Earp movies and TV shows out there. But we DO have Tombstone and it suffers by comparison.

@@ashleighelizabeth5916 there was a tv show or tv movie that I watched YEARS ago as a kid, it was about Wyatt Earp but I have no idea what it was called. It mentioned Wyatt looking for one of his brother's kids who was running with a bad gang. It might have been Return to Tombstone but Im not sure. Also, maybe "Hot garbage" was an unfair description. It had good moments. But it very much tried to embellish Wyatt Earp as an almost legendary character. Tombstone shows him more "flawed" and humane (though it does portray him arguably better than he was).

@@luciomanson I agree! The 1st time I watched it I was unsure of Dennis Quaid portrayal of Doc but in fairness I was comparing it to Val Kilmer's version of Doc which was masterful. After watching it again I really enjoyed Quaid's performance. Definitely #2 to Kilmer's #1 portrayal

Historians are uncertain how much contact Kate and Doc had after Tombstone. There is no evidence of her being with Doc in Colorado.

The actors in this film vanished into their roles so hard that I didn't even realize who was whom until much later in life. A legitimate masterpiece. The "NO!" scene gets a lot of flak for some reason, but that was always one of my favorites in the film. It's just so awesome.

Thanks for the video! I had heard that this movie was closest to the truth of all the "Wyatt Earp Sagas" But as the newspaper editor told Jimmy Stewart in the movie "Man who shot Liberty Valance" - "This is the west sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

i just love how much of the movie is shot like 60s spaghetti westerns. so many super close up shots and everyone is so so sweaty. only things missing was an Ennio Morricone score and over dubbing.

My father was named Wyatt because his mother loved the 50s TV show and just last year I went to Dodge City, Kansas to pay my respects to the iconic Lawman whose name I also inherited. When Tombstone came out I don't think Earp was well known to people born between my Father's birth in the late 50s and mine in the early 80's because I heard tons say "so that's where your name came from." Since then there has been a strong resurgence in the name Wyatt. I gotta say, it's pretty cool to have Kurt Russell portray your namesake.

0:14 I have long wondered if Wyatt disembarking from train car "No. 5150" was deliberate. "51/50" is a slang term referring to the California law code for individuals who present a danger to themselves or others.

Tombstone is my favorite western of all time. If anyone has a chance to go to Tombstone AZ I would recommend it. I have been there twice and had a fantastic time watching the OK Corral reenactors and getting hammered at the bars and restaurants. Great place with friendly people!

For a better appreciation of this movie, get the DVD with the commentary and making of additions. That explains why the artistic licence was taken, and where, and which aspects of the film were as authentic as possible.

Great video, but I notice a huge deservice to the making of the film. They shot a different movie and the theatrical one was vastly changed by reshoots. Originally there was a much less clear distinction between good guys and bad guys. The Earps were doing bad things and the cowboys were more sympathetic. I want to see a recut of this film including the original storyline

In real life the Earps were indeed the bully aggressors. The brothers that were killed during the OK Corral fight were just poor farmers and didn't deserve it.

I love this movie. I watch this every time I see it on. Doesn’t matter where in the movie it is. It’s my favorite and I’m not a huge western fan. But Val in this is absolutely fucking amazing. It’s his best acting. His back and forth with Biehn is great. Love the line "I’m your Huckleberry". You can see the fear in Ringo’s eyes.

The gunfight actually didn't occur at the OK Corral. The shootout actually took place in a narrow lot on the side of C. S. Fly's photography studio on Fremont Street, six doors west of the O.K. Corral's rear entrance. All Western movies about the gunfight at OK Corral have this detail wrong. It really doesn't matter to me. 'Tombstone' is my favorite depiction of this story. Great cast and great acting.

Considering how sketchy historical accuracy was back in those days, it's likely there are very few true accounts of anything that occurred way back then. Either way, as far as movies go, Tombstone is by far the best modern western ever made. It's damn sure the most quotable. Almost every line is a famous quote. That's when you know you have an iconic movie on your hands.

I know that Kurt Russell basically directed the entire film and I believe doc had many friends/family around when he died . Also their was a really crazy drunk fight between doc and Ike that the film kind of touched on .

I'm part of the younger generation (1992), but Tombstone was my first favorite non-animated movie. It's special to me, and I was surprised it isn't as well known to people my age & younger. I always advise people to keep this movie and the history in separate camps.

All the leads should have gotten Oscars!!! Everyone was at the top of their game and spirred the other actors to do the same.. That doesn't happen often but it sure did here!

However, the movie shows that Doc Holliday left the Corral unharmed, in reality only Wyatt was unharmed during the Corral shootout and the reason for Wyatts and Docs fallout is because Doc was actually opposed to Wyatt and Josephine getting married and Doc refered to Wyatt as "a damned jewboy" (Josephine was from a jewish family).

I read that Johnny Ringos revolver had only 5 bullets in it when they found him. Either shooting himself or at someone who killed him. It was ruled a suicide by the coroner. They would not have done that with a fully loaded pistol.

The only fact I take exception to was the gunfight with Curly Bill . I had heard that first off, everyone left and Wyatt was left alone; plus, he stood perfectly still , and not one bullet hit him; just his coat. He did , in fact kill Curly Bill in that fight, though.

According to Earp when Curly Bill's bunch opened fire Earp pulled his shotgun and dismounted. Holliday and the others turned and galloped off. Earp and Curly Bill exchanged shotgun blasts. Curly Bill was killed. The other cowboys were still shooting. Earp tried to get to his rifle but his horse was spooked and he couldn't reach it. Finally he mounted and rejoined his posse who were surprised he was alive and unwounded, especially with all the bullet holes in his clothing. They offered to go after the cowboys, but Earp said he'd had enough and they retreated.

The only thing I dislike about the movie is the way Shakespeare is depicted as something foreign to the "common people" when in fact this was the height of popularity of Shakespeare and most "common people" could recite favorite selections from the plays, while at the lowest levels of society fights (and some famous riots) could break out over discussions of which actor portrayed which Shakespearian role best.

I was a 17 year old kid into Star Wars, Aliens and Terminator when this came out, so yeah, I missed it. Only later I started getting into westerns, but somehow this one still kept eluding me (even though I had a heavy mancrush on Michael Biehn *and* Val Kilmer as a teen). Last year I got it on bluray and finally got to see it. I'm looking forward to years of regular rewatching. :-)

I know a guy who lives by Johnny Ringo's grave - it's a neat place, but it is on private property. The family that owns it allows visitors to access it freely. The family that owns the gravesite goes back to the original ranching family to this day. If you do visit, please be respectful of the family.

I have such fond memories of sitting on my friend's couch watching this vhs on repeat week after week while cleaning our guns and packing for hunting trips and such. We must have all watched this movie a hundred times or more over the years and it just never got old. The buddy who's house we used to watch it has since passed on, so I really cherish these flashbacks. I was also lucky enough to visit the little town one day while driving cross country to a new Naval duty station. I was all by myself and just up and decided to make the trip out of my way. Bought a little wooden pocket knife with my name on I still have! lol Good memories. It was a beautiful day and the people were all very friendly.

Absolutely my favourite cowboy movie of all time. Great choice to feature. It only beats 'Unforgiven' because the latter was such a bleak deconstruction of the cowboy genre. Tombstone was well written, directed and filmed. In my opinion, a cowboy character outside of the genre better be played by Sam Elliott, otherwise it's gonna suck. Elliott as Virgil Earp is the epitome of the cowboy, the very AVATAR of the cowboy.

I may be off on this but I remember a story of a bounty hunter hired to kill Wyatt (before tombstone) showing up, he and Wyatt cleared out a saloon to talk in private and the bounty hunter left not fulfilling the bounty and nobody knows what exactly was said.

Remarkable that you didn't point out that the gun fight at the ok corral - as accurate the depiction might have been in the film - really didn't happen at the ok corral. It happened a few plots further.

This movie is a perfect adaptation of American Folklore/History. Embellished and theatrical as necessary. Its like how we actually recount stories to pass down but visualized perfectly in the medium of film. Truly a masterpiece.

From what I remember reading about the "Vendetta Ride", only 5 or 6 people were killed by Wyatt and his posse. Tho I also heard several more came up 'missing'. The Kevin Costner movie, Wyatt Earp was a much more accurate portrayal of actually historical events (albeit less entertaining). Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc is iconic to be sure, but I actually prefer (ever so slightly) Dennis Quaid's performance.

Interesting that Wyatt Earp went back and forth with his admittance of killing Johnny Ringo. Was he trying NOT to be official in killing him for worry about publicity or even vendettas on him? If it's more decided that he did kill Johnny rather than he had no involvement in this, then it's further interesting that this film not only goes for the story of Doc killing Johnny, but also to state that Wyatt was unable to do this, as it portrays Johnny being a faster draw than Earp. I find it a bit odd that it weighs heavily so much toward Doc being the one to kill Ringo over Wyatt. Yes the movie results of Doc vs Ringo were incredibly intense, unbearably suspenseful and altogether explosively exciting though and I loved it!

I think Kurt Russell is the best Wyatt. The way they described Wyatt Earp in newspapers, fits Kurt Russell. He even has the warm smile. I just have this gut feeling that Mr. Earp's mannerisms are much like Mr. Russell's in that movie.

Easily one of my favorite movies ever, and I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Westerns. Too many iconic scenes to list... every minute is great! I'm not too concerned with historical accuracy; I'll watch a documentary if I want to learn the facts. I will say that it does have the second cringiest "NOOOO!!" in movie history, behind only Darth Vader's in Episode 3.

The original script was so much better than what they came up with. There are more deleted scenes such as the Cowboy Bonfire Scene. There's also a scene between Wyatt and Josie that for some reason, the director did not include in the deleted scenes. I keep hoping though!!
