Despite flopping theatrically in 1986, Highlander, starring Christopher Lambert as an immortal warrior named Connor MacLeod, was an international hit at the box office and cleaned up on home video. After a disappointing sequel (Highlander 2: The Quickening), the decision was made to spin the franchise off into a TV show, Highlander: The Series. The show, which starred Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod, ran for six seasons, spawning a spin-off (Highlander The Raven) and two films (Highlander: Endgame Highlander: The Source).
In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, we take a look into the show's origins, including the pilot, which featured Christopher Lambert as Connor, the spin-offs, feature films and the show’s enduring legacy.
Do you remember Highlander: The Series? Let us know in the comments!

One of my favorite ideas from the series was that the "good" immortals had quietly and collectively decided that having a close-knit circle of friends and allies to hang out with through the rest of Human history was more valuable than whatever the Prize could be. The good guys choosing friendship and love over personal power was the morality the rest of the show was built on.

One of my favorite things about the Highlander series was the use of flashbacks as a B-plot. It gave us a glimpse of what immortality was like for these characters, and really let everyone stretch their acting, costuming, and set design.

The memories would be very strange. Only reason memories are strong is if you are constantly dwelling on them or sharing them with other people. I could easily believe 5000 year old immortals would misremember nearly everything about their past or even forget things from several identities ago. It works great in series but would be a psychological mess for them. Best case get 20 years in an idenity, worst case get a few weeks before another immortal shows up and requires you to move on. Not sure how a modern reboot would cope with the impossibility of country governments and general public not knowing about it in a world of mass surveilance and instant communication. Probably why it is so hard to get off the ground.

@@ironreed2654 Starting with the fact that they introduced a bizarre plotline involving a Zoroastrian demon - in a show that never before had that kind of element - in the episode where Richie dies. Why not just have another of Duncan's endless supply of past Immortal enemies do the deed then spend Season 6 having Duncan (with help from Joe & Methos) track down the villain while meeting interesting new Immortals along the way (i.e., use this premise to introduce the candidates for the new series)?

Highlander was one of my favorite TV series of the 90s. It had everything you could want from a show: great action sequences, a charismatic lead, and decent historical set pieces, given the limited budget. Its focus on history, seen through the eyes of Duncan MacCleod, was what made the show distinct from all the other shows of that era. Very few shows, especially at that time, brought history to life the way Highlander did. It even made people, who didn't have much of an interest in history before, take an interest. The show did for history what MacGyver did for piquing an interesting in science.

In 1994 I worked in a nightclub in Vancouver that held an event every Thursday night. It was called "Chocolate Milk" and it was one of the first spaces to use ambient lounge sounding music in a relaxed setting. It was the place to be at that time, and many "famous" people would show up. Adrian Paul was one of those regulars, and he was a complete joy to deal with. Always super friendly and just a nice guy. I was also lucky enough to see them filming some episodes around the city at times, it was a great series!

I loved everything about it as an atheist kid growing up, but now I see the same annoying, revisionist trends that woke shows today have & I'd love to see more of an exploration of historical ideas & religions outside of Europe, Africa in particular - actual, African history & ideas, not woke crap about them where they are shoe-horned into western, socialist narratives. Everything is so annoyingly socialist/Euro-centric now that it's boring everyone to tears as it's the same old proapganda that we've been hearing for decades while simultaneaously watching that ideology turn the world to crap (socialist wars in the ME for oil also brings out the most genocidal ideology conceived by humanity - islam) over the last 120-150 years of it, racism & eugenics included. Since history is one big revolution & always comes back to the same crap that these religions & ideologies were trying to change, I'd love to see more of these ideas reflected through the experiences of these immortals. Remember that reboots are just unoriginal cash grabs & that Pedowood should be starved, not rewarded for their garbage. The best bet for good, new content is from independent creators.

I loved this show when I was in high school. I was lucky enough to know Stan a little bit in Los Angeles when he was an acting teacher. Really good dude. He was very patient with me when I nerded out when I met him. He was always very appreciative of people who enjoyed Highlander. He said he was shocked when they killed him off. He also said that the his impressions were that the producers became more interested in the merchandising Highlander than producing anymore content. RIP Stan.

I always felt that Duncan loved Ritchie like a son and that was why they were close, yet butted heads like fathers and sons do. I always hoped that Duncan's prize for winning the game was to be reunited with Tessa as his wife and a new born Ritchie as their son. I also liked how Methos was kind of grooming Duncan into being the one to win the prize

Duncan and Tessa is my favorite couple in TV history. A funny note, however: When originally watching the 1st episode here in the US, they have a scene where Tessa is in the shower and the shower looks like it has a pattern to sort of blurr it out. Which is realistic. My wife and I started rewatching a few years ago and saw the international release and you totally see her tits. We were stunned (and delighted).

Prestige TV didn't really exist at the time. It would be another year before The Sopranos came out. I'm sure you know that, I'm just leaving this here for posterity. Highlander is truly inspiring and I dread to think how the property will be handled in today's social/political climate. That being said, with great care, a Highlander series done written with respect to the audience and mature characterizations could be amazing. Henry Cavill as Connor though... big mistake IMO.

I also liked the idea but I think it was one of the weakests aspects of the lore of the franchise because it was executed poorly: their stupid big-ass tattoo (what a discreet element for a secret society to have), the almost comical ease in which they were nearly taken down by one immortal that did not even knew about them like a couple of days beforehand, the also seemly easy way their rouge elements could act using their resources to go against their very core function and that moronic storyline in which there was almost a Watcher-Immortal war. I love the series and even now rewatching it, it still holds itself quite well but also had a lot of silly and nonsensical elements, but hey that's that the story of the franchise, a premise full of potential and with some great stuff but also an example of wasted potential.

@@MrB00mbang I definitely do not argue that.. For me, nobody, really nobody can ever replace Adrian Paul as a TV series Highlander. My sympathies for both actors are based solely on their respective roles I've seen them in (both movies & TV series ones). If there's a reboot I'll probably give it a try, but I admit, I'm prejudiced - mainly because all of the reboots I've witnessed (movies / series / games / etc..) sucked noodles. To me, adding more CGI / action / speeding up the pace / adding stupid drama and similar 'cool & hip' shenanigans.. All only underline the obvious lack of any new ideas, shallow scripts, bad acting, etc.. And I want none of it. Let me give you a personal-opinion-based example of something different to the above - Twin Peaks: The Return - David Lynch didn't any kind of a reboot or re-imagining (which is more often than not just as bad thing to do), but instead developed a brand new continuation to the original story and, thanks to the hard work put into making it happen, in 2017 it came to life to glaring reviews and widespread acclaim - as well as a pleasant, personal feelings of having the opportunity to watch another masterpiece.

One of my favorite lines from the series, there was an immortal actor/musician who mentioned being on stage with William Shakespeare, and The Rolling Stones.

"Masters of the universe" goes off the rail around 2 minutes mark. The first 2 minutes are spot on.

This was by far my favorite television series of that time and I plan on revisiting it very soon. I always preferred Duncan to Conor but definitely loved them both.

Your point about the full version of "princes of the universe" is spot on. The first time I heard it, I was like "what...". And then it grew on me with a few more listens. It really is a great song, start to finish.

I remember as a kid one night I was going through the channels on my television and seen this dude jumping through a glass ceiling and the other guy grabbed a sword, I was a fan from that moment. The one going through the ceiling was Richard Moll and the other guy grabbing his sword was Adrian Paul. The guy playing Richy was also in the store stealing antiques. McCloud thought Richy was the immortal, but it was Moll. I believe that was the first episode. Joe Dawson and Methos were the coolest characters after McCloud, those 3 were always the closest.

I had a hit and miss with this show, in the beginning there were a lot of misses, in that I kept missing it! Looking back on it, I now realise I now know I saw a part of an episode, and didn't know what the show was. Then later, when I still had analogue regional TV, my sister told me about this "amazing tv show you'll love, its called Highlander!" Unfortunately, when i asked her when and where, she said it was on Friday nights, on Meridian ITV, the trouble was, as i reminded her, every Friday I went to our parents for the weekend, and they got Carlton ITV. So I was going to miss it. She then called me back saying its on Carlton ITV, on a Tuesday night! And again, I'd miss it because I was back home again! So it took me ages to finally see the show, 1997, a year before it finished. But I got SO into the series! To the point where my brother claimed thst I was obsessed, and could in fact probably link any subject to Highlander. To prove his point he gave me to subject 'Dinosaurs'! And yes, not ten minutes later I did! And when I told our big brother what our little one had said, he laughed and said try Bob the Builder, (a kids show.). Half hour later, I connected them too! A few years after I first sawbthe show, I started reading Highlander fan fiction, some of which really continued the saga for me. And through which in 2004 it came through one of the Yahoo!Groups that Peter Wingfield, Methos was going to be at the Stargate SG1 Con, as he was a character in the show, but as a nod to his HL fans in the UK, he was doing a side Con, but tickeys were limited. I actually got one and travelled up to London, and met him, and had a photo taken with him. I also bought some pictures for him to sign. One of which was a pic of him as Methos kneeling in the Dojo, with Duncan holding a raised sword above his head. Peter Wingfield signed his name over Methos saying, "I'll sign this here, so when you meet Adrian, he can sign it too!" As you can imagine I thought, if only! Then in August 2018, I had that opportunity when Adrian Paul and his Sword Experience came to Rochester Castle in Kent UK, a part of my home town. And yes, after 14 yrs, I got to speak to the man himself, and told him what Peter had said, and gave him the photo, to which Adrian signed it next to Peter's signature, with the comment, "There can be only one!" To say that made my year was an understatement! A few years before, I was really lucky that my wonderful daughter had actually gotten me the region 2 DVDs of the whole series. Unfortunately the only version she could get was one from Germany. The show its self is in English, but all the tiles at the beginning of S1, the subtitles and format layout are all in German, and it took me a while to figure it out. But the most annoying thing is that the first season is also out of IMDB episode order. BUT at the end of the day, this great series was and is a great joy to watch, and Yes, I aldo have continuity issuses with Endgame, as in "Kate" grrr! As for the Source, I can't even remember what version I saw, just the once. As for the other Highlander movies, despite being English, until I first saw Highlander the movie for the first time in 1994, I hadn't really taken much notice of Queen, as such. There were a couple of songs I liked, including, "It's A Kind Of Magic," not knowing it had anything to dow with Highlander, but as the years have gone on, I've enjoyed their music so much more. And apart from Queen, other songs I discovered through Highlander was Dust In The Wind, by Kansas, and one of the songs that lives 'rent free' in my head, first heard in Highlander 3, is Bonny Portmore, by Loreena McKennitt, this song and version has been a firm favourite of mine. There's also S4E1 version by Laura Creamer. The thought of Ryan Reynolds having ANYTHING to do with the HL franchise terns my stomach! He might be a nice guy in RL, but I can't stand his comedic movies! So I seriously hope he doesn't become a part of any reboot, not that we even need one!
