In this video I show you how to install a map from a different region on a Garmin Device. This is useful if are travelling to a region that you don't have the maps for and wish to use your Garmin while there.

It was great the first week I used it, but Garmin is super behind on map updates. I drive, and travel a ton for work. I ended up using Google maps on my phone than the Garmin because just about every address I put in it didn't recognize, or find. There are roads paved, and named yet Garmin screen is grey. Nothing. However, Google maps can see it. My maps, and firmware is up to date with the updates, and I still have the issue. Some places I work are still under development which is understandable, but some have been established for gears, and Garmin can't find it? I spent $300 bucks on this thing, and it's a great device. The display is superb, lane isolations, and previews of exits are great! However, the only drawback to it is the maps, and traffic is awful, in my opinion. Drive smart is on my phone, and connected I still have my phone running just in case. I should have bought a tablet with a service plan. It would've costed the same with a bigger screen, maps would've been more reliable.

Hi Joseph (or Moto Guru), I might be commenting as of late (sorry I just found this channel) - but I do have a remaining question following this video : how can we now install this newly purchased map to BaseCamp so that we can plan routes without having the GPS connected each time? You can't unfortunately. The software will only let you download the native map to the computer.

I hope you are still active. Do you think buying a garmin drive smart 55 and then use a japan map will work? Drivesmart 55 is not available in JApan but gamin have japan website

Hey. When you navigate to the maps for sale on the Garmin website, it tells you which devices they are compatible with. I looked on the Garmin website and I can't find an automotive map for Japan though.

Should I order the pre loaded sd card straight from garmin? Or do the download? It's the same price either way, right?

I don't think it makes any difference. I suppose the only thing to consider is you wont be able to use the SD card for anything else whether you use your own or one from Garmin. They offer map deals occasionally. I got a great deal on the USA map for my new XT. Something like 90% off. The last thing to be aware of is that the maps are not transferable so you can't move them to a new Garmin if you upgrade. They are locked to the device.

As far as I'm aware it's locked to a single device. Otherwise you could just clone the SD card and use it on numerous devices or upload the map to the internet.

hello I bought my garmin Drive 65 in February 2020 in Oman used it with the installed Middle East and north Africa. I went to Tanzania and I bought East Africa map when I came back to Oman my Middle East map was missing all other embeded maps are available please help me to re install the middle east map

I think you should install Garmin Express and then check for the latest map updates. This should reinstall your original map.

Hi I have a Honda crv 2019 touring trim. I have exported the vehicle from Canada to United Arab Emirates. Dubai. My issue is that Radio and Navigation does not work. Radio channel jumps 2 steps. Which is different in my region. Middle east. Navigation is also not working because the vehicle is already having Northern American/Canada maps installed which I can’t change. Any help

You'll need to take it to a dealer and have them update the infotainment system so that it matches your region.

16GB would be more than enough. They are not expensive though so throw in a 32 or 64.

That's strange. What happens if you specify a country in Europe when setting a destination.

Sorted problem was with the formatting the Sd card before installation. you need to make sure on the mac that you choose the correct option for formatting needs to be fat 32 regards D@@JosephByrne

That is unlikely to every happen because the maps are hosted on the device where as Google maps are hosted in the cloud. The accuracy of Google maps relative to the real world is also very bad. The Garmin maps are much better when it comes to the actual position of roads. Garmin devices are also serving a different market. Those who want to use Google maps and their smart phones are already doing so. Garmin users need a map and a device they can rely on in areas where there is no connectivity.

Here are good. I used them on my Windows phone before. Mount your phone to your motorbike and the vibrations will wreck the camera though.

the effort to complete these simple steps will kill Garmin. Seriously, this should have been plug and play, maybe click one button. Garmin is dangerously lagging and outdated. This was the norm in 2002, not 2022.

Yes it is a bit pants, but the flip side is you get a reliable map and you only have to do it once. I do agree though, there should be a map store on the device where you can purchase and download them directly. That would be far more convenient. I think you should also be able to take out a week's subscription for a smaller fee like, £10 if you were in Dubai for a few weeks. Then after that the map deactivates. I think they invested so heavily in their original technology that it's difficult to transition but they'll get there. They must also be concerned that many modern bikes are coming with built in GPS like cars. A casual consumer will always default to what is the least amount of effort and if your bike comes fully loaded you probably won't look elsewhere unless you are an enthusiast or want to navigate offroad.
