August 2nd, 1970, Hockenheim, Germany. 28-year-old Jochen Rindt stands atop the winner’s podium, holding the German Grand Prix championship trophy. His wife and young daughter stand proudly at his side. He looks across the crowd of cheering Germans and thinks back to the 1961 German Grand Prix - when he was one of them. A schoolboy watching his first ever F1 race, realizing for the first time that he wanted to become a driver. Nine years later, he was on top of the racing world, poised to become world champion. Little did he know that this would be his last time standing atop the podium. Today on Past Gas, the story of Jochen Rindt.

I was taking a bite of cinnamon and sugar toast as Nolan said "That's the sound of a Porsche driving by." I laughed blowing air out of my nose, spraying sugar and cinnamon all over my lap, keyboard, and computer desk! Dammit! I'll clean it up later.

I'm Austrian and from the same city Jochen lived with his great parents. It's also the city where he's buried. It's tradition amongst many of us to visit his grave side during all hallows and place candles. As a car guy it brings a tear to my eye every year that people remember this underrated legend. A few years back, the city of Graz developed an entirely new borough and its main square, so to speak, is called the Jochen-Rindt-Platz. When it was revealed, Bernie Ecclestone and Sir Jackie Stewart were also present. I know Jochen wasn't as well known as Niki, but for me he'll always be *the* Austrian racing driver (even though technically he was German).

Jochen Rindt was a true champion. In a poll for best F1 drivers of all time amongst 211 F1 drivers past and present he was voted #14 despite his career being cut short so tragically. For his close friend Bernie Ecclestone he belongs to the Top5 most talented F1 drivers of all time. Jackie Stewart, another close friend believes he very likely would have become a multiple world champion. His 29 F2 race wins represent an all time record that holds up to this day. P.S. The photograph you show at the beginning is of the Zandvoort 1970 victory ceremony. Jochen looks depressed because his friend Piers Courage burned to death in the race before. R.i.P.

He did not lose control, one of the brake shafts (the 72 had inboard brakes) failed and sent him into the barriers. Also there are wild kangaroos in Austria, since some escaped a few years ago and nobody was able to catch them again. Also also Austria has hill climb races, like pikes peak, on local levels.
