This shit gets to me man. These old school, revolutionary war/civil war guys really are the reason we have our freedoms today. My best friend was deployed in Afghanistan in the early 2000’s. We talk about it sometimes and he now questions why we were ever there. War is ugly, and not always necessary. I will never take away from my brothers and sisters of the recent wars. But these old school guys had CLEAR reason and purpose for their fight. To all who have fallen for the betterment of this country, thank you.

You got 20 years of no more 9/11's. You showed a generation of Afghans what freedom and education looked like. Girls went to school and got an opportunity to read. The Taliban will struggle to contain this spark. It's going to suck for them but I predict an eventual overthrow of the zealots.

Something about this keeps bringing me back. It's like I'm addicted to it. The line "my courage does not halt or falter" embodies what I want in my life yet I am ruled by fear. It's the idea that I want my courage to neither halt nor falter that I'm addicted to. I must do it

Sadly, like so many men in this country, Sullivan Ballou died to enrich merchants, and to defend his government's right to trample its citizens rights all under the pretense of patriotism. It makes his sacrifice all the more tragic as I have no doubt he thought what he was doing was just.

I remember way back in 1990 when PBS showed the "CIVIL WAR" by Ken Burns. That letter from Sullivan Ballou to his wife Sarah, was read with a sad violin playing in the background. To this day, I still get emotional, yet proud of the poetically beautiful words he wrote.. The true essence of being American: Love of God, love of country, and love of family!! God save America!

@@stephencruz9658 I appreciate and agree with your viewpoint to certain level. There a many people in society, to include myself, that will still lay down our lives for our freedoms. Those are the not the radicals we see protesting, but the ones that are prepared to do so if ever came to it. Those that are retired military like myself are always just as active duty are. I think the whole state of Idaho where I live is ready if need be. There is a lot of patriotism out there, it’s just not always put out there on social media.

What makes attaining freedom through war different for other nations? As I see it, this narrative and the sentiments in it could be expressed by a man from any region. Only the language, which is ultimately arbitrary, makes it specific to a nation. Perhaps it's the unnecessary, excessive emphasis of freedom, to the point of redundancy, what makes it feel so American to you. Liberty can be appreciated reasonably.

@@gabrielguerrero7189 You’re stupid. Every first world nation fights for freedom. Every person on this planet yearns for some type of freedom, and many have died for it, not just Americans. Freedom isn’t an American concept. Before America even existed, people were going to war for their independence and freedom. The most ironic part is that America ranks at number 1 for most incarcerated citizens. How’s that for freedom? Sounds like you’re the one that needs to study history.

For those of us in the South, we called it "First Manassas." Yankee casualties were some 3,000, with 1,750 for the Rebs. Despite the Confederate victory, the was so much confusion on the part of the South, they were unable to effectively pursue the Union forces, who were able to escape. As the North had expected an easy victory, it came as a shock, and led the South into a false sense that they too, would soon win a political victory. 4 bloody years later, that effort came to an end.

As awesome as this is.....this is the only other thing that comes to mind "I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.” Smedly D. Butler
