Epiphone and Joe Bonamassa are proud, no, really nerding out to present the Joe Bonamassa “Lazarus” 1959 Les Paul Standard. A guitar inspired in part by a conversation over a plate of meatballs at a favorite Hollywood guitar nerd hangout.

As the story goes, a red, dinged-up Les Paul was literally brought to Joe’s table at Barone’s in Hollywood, which in turn launched an impromptu investigation into the true identity and origin of the guitar in question. Kim LaFleur, of Historic Makeovers, confirmed Joe’s nagging suspicions that the guitar was indeed a 1959 Les Paul Standard. Joe was ecstatic and so moved by this stroke of good fortune that he named the guitar Lazarus. Much like Lazarus of the Bible, this ’59 Les Paul literally came back from the dead. Not wanting that to be the end of the story, Joe teamed up with Epiphone to honor this great guitar with an artist model aptly named the Epiphone Joe Bonamassa “Lazarus” 1959 Les Paul Standard. Try saying that with a mouth full of meatballs. The Lazarus features a mahogany body with a maple cap that is topped with a wide-grain AAAA flame maple veneer. The sweet tone comes from some of Joe’s favorite pickups; Gibson BurstBuckers paired with 50s style wiring and CTS® potentiometers and Mallory™ capacitors. Lazarus comes with a vintage-style case sporting Bonamassa graphics and a certificate of authenticity.

Not too long ago I bought the Epiphone 1959 Les Paul standard outfit, which I wanted for a while and I'm very happy with it but then I seen your Epiphone 59 Lazarus Les Paul. When I got the 1959 LP standard outfit I was was happy with my collection, a Gibson Les Paul Custom, a 2010 Epiphone limited edition Slash Les Paul another Epi Classic LP (that has everything upgraded), a couple of Ibanez RGs (a 91 and a 2018) a 1991 Fender Heartfeild Talon an SG, a Yamaha Pacifica, instead of a good Strat (I've got a Squire for home use and another 10, or more, other guitars so when I got the 1959 Epi I thought yep, that'll do but just lately I've been seeing your Epi Lazarus and it looks like I'm buying another guitar. Epiphone have made a great guitar, I'm sure you'd b proud of it. I also like the idea of making a Epiphone version so more people can enjoy it. Thank u Joe. 👍🏻

@@danielktdoran Polyurethane finish is a much, much more durable finish than lacquer. But, some people don't care for the shine or deepness of the look. Remedy is not buffing out the Polyurethane finish to the extent and stopping the process short with a satin or medium gloss. But then there is the "wood breathing" crowd and the folks that like a finish to check and to deteriorate in the way that lacquer does.

I missed out on the Lazarus as unfortunately by the time I found out about there were all spoken for but on the bright i already owned a killer epi 59 and I just got a second one and my second one sounds exactly like some of the Lazarus 59s I have heard in demo hideous. Accept for the finish the only difference is a one piece neck vs a 3 piece neck but despite having 2 epi 59s i still want a Lazarus and that had nothing to do with the Joe Bonamassa aspect it's just a really cool looking and sounding guitar and has my favorite epi 59 finish . It's the most natural and authentic looking of all the epi 59s . I have my eye on a third epi 59 . It's one of the retailer exclusives in Canada its the aged royal ice tea or royal tea but to my eyes it looks like one of the lighter tobacco sunburst finishes from the early to mid 70s like the one Alex lifeson had . Kind of a reddish brown . Today a tobacco sunburst is along always pure black . I have one epi 59 with the stock Burstbuckers 2 and 3 . The second has Gibson custombuckers and if I get the third which I should probably not buy but most likely will buy I will put a 57 classic plus in the bridge and a Burstbucker 1 in the neck as I don't like the regular 57 classic as a neck pickup for a les paul and I have a couple Of BB1s in a drawer . It would be cool to have 3 epi 59s loaded with pickups from all three of Gibsons modern PAF pickup families. The custombucker Burstbucker and 57 classic families. That would make some very fun interesting and informative playing session s

The specs look good on this one (well, except for the fretboard …). But it‘s obvious that the top doesn‘t look as nice as the one on the original Gibson, a feat which would indeed be hard to achieve with just a veneer. But man, I am kind of on the fence regarding this one. If it had a nicer fretboard however, I would probably directly pull the trigger …
@Edward1312
@Edward1312 2 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that some of the batches of laurel that Epi have used on the Epi 59 are v dark and indistinguishable from rosewood, I have a darkburst myself where you would be hard pushed to tell it wasn't Rosewood in look and feel, the laurel is that good. Its pot luck what you get to a certain extent as the laurel on the guitar featured here is very grey whereas if your lucky you may get a guitar with a much darker and browner hue.
@yannick2047
@yannick2047 2 жыл бұрын
@@Edward1312 yep, the color of the fretboard and also the quality of the flamed top (veneer) is pure luck, at least as long as one orders online (and let‘s be honest, most people are probably going to do it this way). The Color and look of the laurel fretboard will probably also depend on the amount of care you apply to this board, I.e. oiling and moisturizing the board properly. Furthermore, the amount of care invested here will most likely also raise the playability and ‚feel‘-factor of the guitar, since strings and fingers can slide over the fingerboard more easily. I just hope they didn’t use too porous wood for these fingerboard because at some point, even the best fingerboard care cannot save it any more. In some shots of these commercial videos it somehow looks like this were the case. However, I have seen some recent demo videos on KZfaq where the fingerboard looks much better.

It varies. I bought a left handed 50s standard Les Paul and the top is gorgeous. The fretboard looked pale like the one in the video but after putting some oil on it, it darkened up real nice and it looks like rosewood. Of course, it all depends. I’ve seen some really awful looking ones

I’ve become very disenchanted with Epiphone of late- you’ve come up with some amazing guitars; The Vivian Campbell The Lifeson The ‘59 The Lazarus And NONE of them offered in a left handed model. I mean, come on, guys. There are left handed players all over the world. More than in the US, a great number of EU, AUS and Japanese left handed players. Still, Epiphone, and Gibson, for that matter, release these great instruments, and give no options, or scans few, for left handed players. Now, i guess you could say, “learn to play right handed”. Yeah. No thanks. I love being a lefty. But as a maker, I’d think you’d want all the sales, not just some of the sales. There are a lot of major makers who offer left handed models out of hand. So come on, epiphone. Let’s get some left handed models of note.

It's not that simple as you have to change all your tooling which is expensive because the LH playing population is much less than 10% (the percentage of the LH pop) because a lot of LH have learned to play right-handed. What this means is because there are so few LH players it doesn't make commercial sense to make LH guitars.

@@Edward1312 not sure I agree with you these days; first off, if you have left handed models, especially in the Les Paul line, you're set up to do lefties. it comes down to discrimination, and a company with believes its not worth their time. also, brick and mortar stores keep lefties on the shelves too long, then think its because there aren't any in their market, when in fact, the lefties they keep in stock are cheap, black, and not of the quality a right handed player would pick, let alone a lefty. left handed players make up a larger market abroad than in the US, this is true. however, we are here, nonetheless. the EU, Japanese, asian and Australian makers have so many lefties, entire store chains are committed to providing high end left handed guitars to their customers. only in the USA do you get a full compliment of 180.00 black Ibanez starter packs, Squier starter guitars in black, and that's it. seasoned players usually have to buy sight unseen. and I would buy a LOT more sight unseen if Gibson/epiphone gave a shit about us. look at schecter and ESP/LTD. nearly all their lines have lefty models.

Pat told me do not go buy his guitar to me I said I wouldn’t as I don’t play guitar and didn’t plan to he thought his guitar liked me a little he’d been over there for a while at peters motel room I think his dad took it back for him maybe where they bought it asked his name Simmons his dad said Pat hD said and that was it. Peter had asked he may have been thinking of taking a guitar back. Butnotthere but he wondered if theyguitars not from there I remember he called the store up and asked. I noticed he had a British accent which I hadnt actually noticed very much before. So on the phone it was very noticeable I think he might have taken a guitar to them. He might have had Stevie nicks take it there for him maybe with Lindsey buckingham. The store owner was suspicious as the guy who called had a British accent they admitted it and he took the guitar they brought the money to Peter later handed him the money and Change and receipt. He was happy to see. I wondered what I would have that mattered ? Nothing? Maybe I decided to trade Peter green in…. I don’t know why he thought I should write albums why I get a high price and he gets royalties? Like I said. I thought I wouldn’t tell him about those thoughts. Now I wonder what still? I need money for that what would I buy? I think I would buy a solid heartwood pine guitar. From long leaf pine. There must have been one around? There are new trees growing around here some marshals planted like a cash crop they are almost entirely heartwood. Near red winds casino on the right side approaching is a cut log almost all heartwood.
