When I was a kid Henry Cooper lived down the road from us on Ledway Drive, near Preston road, Wembley. I used to see him driving past sometimes. I think they moved away from the area around 1976. I later worked at the Empire Pool where this fight took place and also at the stadium when I was a teenager.

@@elnick1000 About the same for me. I could see a judge (or possibly 2 out of 3 scoring it ‘Cooper by 2’ but it’s hard to see it as a draw let alone a Win for Bugner. Serious error. I barely remember the fight at the time. But my dad - who’d done a fair bit of boxing in the forces during the war - was flabbergasted! Best wishes

Henry put on the better performance. Bugner may have been called the winner, but it cost him the support of the British public. Referee was either blind or paid off.

Cooper landed the better punches and more punches, that's a win in my book. But it was a close contest, so arguably a draw could have been a fair result. But the subplot here, is that Henry had already been beaten at international level including losses to Ali. The promoters wanted to see if Bugner could bring a world belt home to the UK, and a draw would have seen Henry retain the domestic titles and effectively deny Bugner contention for a world belt. Money talks.

@@cliff-nb6bm We can hear that the commentator at ringside was aghast when Bugner was given the win. Decades later in a joint interview with Bugner and Cooper, Cooper said that at the time, he was confident that he'd won, and that when he watched the fight footage back later, if he lost at all it was by no more than half a point. In the same interview Bugner said he was 'surprised' to get the win.

True. Best left hook in the business back then. Ferocious hitting power, very fast hands too. Shame he had a propensity to cut so easily. Ali was saved by the ropes and the bell in their first fight. Had Henry planted his left when Ali was in the middle of the ring, the impact of him slamming into the deck would have caused more brain tilt and put Ali out for the count. The ropes gave him a softer landing. I firmly believe that Henry Cooper in his prime would cut modern heavyweights to pieces, he would be far too fast and boy could he deliver a hard punch.

It’s so hard to tell if he was robbed or just won fairly since it was only highlights however the crowd were strongly on the coppers side so it’s hard to tell if they were booing because of the result being bad or because they didn’t want “our Enry” to lose. This is why we have judges today and not a referee decisions Boxing was so corrupt, still is to be fair. How can a guy have 50 fights and win them all and still not be a contender and another can have ten and be given a title shot? It’s all about who you have as your promoter. Boxing is and always been controlled by a handful of people and that’s why it’s always had that cloud hanging over it. Cooper got robbed against Ali too, Angelo Dundee talks about it too, he said Ali was out cold, didn’t know where he was, he used illegal smelling salts to help to wake Ali up, Ali only got off the floor through instinct but still would’ve not been able to continue had Angelo not messed with his gloves and used to salts, Ali needed more time to recover and Cooper was never supposed to win, he certainly wasn’t supposed to KO Ali, such a shame. Bugbear never got a fair shake by the mainstream fans either, Parkinson during an interview with Ali described Bugner as no where near the calibre of Ali and suggested the fight was a waste of time for Ali.

Henry was beloved - had been chosen as BBC Sports Personality twice in 1967 and 1970. The sense of injustice here allowed him to retire on an enormous wave of sentiment and remain a hugely popular figure for the rest of his life. Bugner was never forgiven.

errmmm! Cooper knocked Ali down cold, Angelo Dundee admitted (much later) to cutting Ali's glove to give him time to recover because he was that spaced out. Ali realised he was in a tough fight and got on top as rounds went by but Cooper only got stopped by the doctor for a terrible cut, he had a tendency to cut which was his weakness. @hotrod29 Your having a laugh, Cooper put Ali on his arse and he was only saved by Angelo Dundee splitting Ali's glove so they had to wait for new gloves giving Ali time to recover, unfortunately Cooper was forced to retire because of blood running into his eye from a cut above it.

Arrogant Cooper saunters over to have his hand raised, Gibbs walks past him without a glance and raises Bugner's; the look on Cooper's face was a joy to behold. Now to retire, to pretend that he could have beaten Ali and be a sourpuss re Bugner. Ten men contested the two versions of the world crown after Ali's disgraceful treatment, Cooper avoided eight in his career and fought two; disqualification win versus Mildenberger and a hammering by Patterson. Why do some blinkered people think that he was world class?
