RIP Joe.... a greatest accordion player!

Had the great pleasure of seeing Joe play in Birmingham at the Ceol Castle one night at the invitation of Pat Molloy a very well known Irish musician living in Birmingham that I was having some lessons with. Apparently Joe was in one dance band in his home village and Pat was in another in his home village and after playing on a saturday night their paths crossed on the journey home at a crossroads in the middle of nowhere. Pat told me that whichever band arrived first would wait for the other and they then shared some tunes on the crossroads at 3am ish on sunday morning. What a great story that I only asked Pat about as Joe during the performance mentioned that they had shared many a tune on the crossroads early on sunday morning which I asked Pat about.

Joe Burke! Since I was a lad growing up in Offaly my old ma Danny Coughlan a legendary accordion player himself always said you were the greatest. And my old man won an all Ireland on a three row in 1958. You guys we’re good pals and playing some serious stuff above no doubt.
