Joe Calzaghe - Is a Welsh former professional boxer who competed from 1993 to 2008. He held world championships in two weight classes, including the unified WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, Ring magazine and lineal super-middleweight titles, and the Ring light-heavyweight title. Calzaghe is the longest-reigning super-middleweight world champion in boxing history, having held the WBO title for over 10 years and defending the title against 20 boxers (a record in the division, shared with Sven Ottke) before moving up to light-heavyweight. As his super-middleweight and light-heavyweight reigns overlapped, he retired with the longest continual time as world champion of any active boxer at the time. Calzaghe was also the first boxer to unify three of the four major world titles (WBA, WBC, and WBO) at super-middleweight, and was the first Ring champion in that weight class.

Criminally-underrated on this side of the Pond, but it makes sense. His dad was a jazz musician and incorporated some of that into his son's style (the same way James Toney picked up "bebop" from his trainer) and what's the old George Foreman quote? "Boxing is like jazz: the better it is, the less people appreciate it."

@Lapaza There are some biased fans like that, but I know Europeans who have some issues with Calzaghe, not fighting Jones in his prime. You can't really talk about fighting B-Hop in his prime, because B-Hop was a freak of nature who was at his most dangerous when he fought Calzaghe. Joe has the fastest mitts I've ever seen (look up his work on the double-end bag).

@@hallvardvalde3882 I'd say it started around the time where people were predicting Pavlik would retire him until his wins over Pascal and Cloud. @@ReservoirPunk But where is it written that Knockdown makes you win the match? The match is evaluated at 360 degrees, and then Pacquiao who in the first match against Marquez knocked him out three times, Marquez defended himself flawlessly and managed to win. rightly that first match, the knockdown is decisive if there is already an advantage of the boxer or at least it is closed, but Hopkins never won that match, more fair to assign it to Calzaghe by at least two points, the most incorrect referee could assign a draw at most!

From a technical perspective what made him so good? I guess it was that he was such a natural fighter, he is always somewhere between unorganized and all over the place with exception punch accuracy, that put his opponents off-balance, no one was ever really able to get a read on him. His awkward style flowed so seamlessly from offence to defense that it made him boxing like water. Every time he knocks someone down they have this look on their face like they just got stung by something they didn't see and when they miss is there face says "how did I just miss him?'' the Welsh/Sardinian drunken master.

One of the All-Time-Great swarmers! I think Calzaghe was 1/3 of the Harry Greb enigma - both were relentless swarmers (blitzing fighters under storms of punches), but Greb also had *very* fast feet and a draining inside clinch game (from descriptions). It's no surprise Calzaghe was a very risky fighter to face in his prime and a great champ.

The main reason Joe was so underrated was because he was simply a nightmare scenario opponent, boxing trainers generally don't like South Paws, they are far and few between so fighters typically build techniques around traditional fighters, not South Paws. Also because they are rare to begin with, there isn't many great ones, you can run through an entire division and never face a left handed fighter. Even when you do, chances are, they are not that good. So when you have a tough as nails, fast as lightning, unorthodox South Paw fighter who can take a punch and throw a punch, you stay the fuck away from him. This is why Joe was underrated, he was a nightmare scenario for any boxer, they wouldn't even put him in the picture to say that he was "dodged"... People just stayed the hell away from that crazy Welsh kid.

@@jakubkowalczyk8992 Styles make fights. Calzaghe's swarming, pressure in-fighting has been shown (historically) to be especially problematic / dangerous to pure boxers...but falls apart versus brawlers. Ward vs. Calzaghe would have been incredible for about 7 - 8 rounds, before Ward starts to wilt.
@TainoMantis
@TainoMantis 3 жыл бұрын
@@SPIDERM0OSE Actually started wilting part way through the 2nd Kovalev fight. But the point is that I struggle to see any of the fighters he beat at SM having Calzaghe's volume & activity. Kessler (slow starter and measured pace), Froch was awkward and measured, Abraham had even lower activity, Dawson was a zombie. I think Bika was the most active in the S6, but he obviously can't compare to Calzaghe.

I don't care about him resume or anything, I just wanna see him slip punches, showboat and do magic. Seriously underappreciated fighter, but then I guess that's what makes it all the more special, little subtle things to pick up on, always something new. The Kessler and Jones performances for me were beautiful. 'Time to shine, Joe!'

People also forget that Joe was trained by his father, who had no real boxing experience! Despite much pressure to leave his father and get a more "experienced" trainer, they stuck together and achieved greatness.

I mean in all fairness he didn't destroy Hopkins it was a close fight in which he got dropped in, Roy Jones was way past his best as well. I do think Calzaghe was a great fighter but using those 2 fights an example for that.. I'm not so sure. He had a really long reign at Super-Middle with an amazing win over Kessler.

I honestly think he would have been too much for canelo. The volumes of punches is completely unmatched and the boxing iQ is phenomenal. To stay in the pocket and let your hands go isn’t an easy thing to do and not get stung back. He was unbeaten for a clear reason and he fought world class fighters

If this man’s hands weren’t so bad all his career, he would have been next level. In his earlier fights he was throwing hard fast combos, in the later half of his career it was fast medium to soft punches as his hand couldn’t take it. Even with this, he still goes down as one a the greats
