Metropol, Berlin, Germany
Composers : Gary Brooker, Keith Reid, Matthew Fisher
This song is Procol Harum cover
The Band :
Lead Guitar - Cliff Goodwin
Bass - Howard Hersh
Keyboards - Larry Marshall
Piano,Arranger - Mitch Chakour
Drums - B.J. Wilson
Vocals - Maxine Greene
Vocals - Ann Lang
Vocals - D.E. Washburne
Lyrics :
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said:"There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
As I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well been closed
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
Her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
Guitar Solo :
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first was ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

I asked the vicar on my wedding day if they would play Whiter shade of pale , he declined said no , I will not have that being played in this church. I was so upset that I told the organist to play what ever he wanted, if I couldn't have this music just play whatever ! We have been together now for nearly 50 years. When my time comes to say goodbuy to all who have loved me ,this Whiter of shade of pale music will be the very last thing I hear ,

As usual, Mr. Cocker used both his incredible talent, and his knowledge of how to blend with an enormous backing band, to crank out a great cover of a classic tune. The original Procol Harum tune, is pretty amazing. This doesn't top it (something Joe has actually done a couple of times with his covers), but it's right there with it, which for a cover is pretty special. Man, Mr. Cocker was an absolute favourite of mine. He'll be missed.

What a great rendition. Joe Cocker, the back-up singers, and the musicians FEEL the music. I just couldn't imagine how I would feel if I watch this live. I can feel the music just watching it on KZfaq. Rest in peace, Joe. You may be gone, but you're still with us.

Man you can hear Joe's soul through his voice, he gives it all he's got in every song he sings.... I can feel his emotional version of this song....as good as the original. RIP Joe.

Remembering Procol Harum when In 1967 I landed in Southend on my way to Mildenhall Air Force base to catch a hop on a C130 back to the States to join my US army unit after visiting my parents in the Netherlands when this great song came out.

How much better live was Joe he owned every song he sung, the original artist’s would have been in awe of his talent. I’ve only seen him live once and if I had to pick the 3 best concerts I’ve ever been to his was No# 1 absolutely brilliant the world has lost a great talent RIP Joe

I would note that Joes recreation of songs are usually not just better than the originals but devastatingly better as to make the originals look like a pale comparison. But in this case I would say that the original Procal Harum version was vastly better in every single way especially the vocals, which is a rare occurrence. That’s not to take away from Joe but to show how great Brookers performance was for this song particularly.

The first time I saw Joe was on TV, I was young and did not understand this amazing singer. As someone said, Joe became the song. I don't think I ever saw that level out of anyone else, maybe young Elvis Presley. Joe was special for sure. Get to know this man, you will be glad you did.

Do you remember a time when this great performer walked amoung us? I do. I also remember as a 14 year old kid in 1969 hearing this man for the first time on my beloved Woodstock album. He was and always will be revered for his unique voice and performances.
