Back from the day when rock was rolling and drugs were the corner stone of any nutritious meal. Joe Cocker and the psychedelic love band Mad Dogs & Englishmen gives their rendition of the classic Space Captain, urging us all to learn how to live together. We still haven't gotten it, so the message is worth a listen. Enjoy rock history.

This song provides a good enough reason to live. I'm 70 now and dying of advanced prostate cancer (with spinal mets) pretty soon. When I first heard this song in 1970, I was two years out of Nixon's Army, trying to study at Berkeley in the midst of teargas clouds. If I decide to take the legal / lethal prescription, Space Captain will be playing on my way out. Too bad we still haven't learned to live together; as the Thai say, "Next life, never mind!" Peace out.

i hope your transition from this life to the next is peaceful and full of love. thank you for your service in a war you should not have been in. space captain is even more relevant for todays society than ever. i was born in 71 and my mum says i used to rock back and forth and ooohhh and ahh in all the right places in my walker. this song and the whole album are part of my soul. my first words were joe cocker ! "we all forgot we could fly" i hope you have remembered how to. x

Mad Dogs was a hippie commune on a musical tour, an experiment in utopian community. The leader was Joe Cocker, the space captain, and the mission was to learn to live together. That is the mission of all human beings. When we complete that mission we will fly up to the sky again. You are great Joe!

You’re more correct than you know, altho returning to the sky ain’t heaven. We’re all just aliens. Or, rather, the “gods” are aliens. We’re the experiment, and we’ve been at the 11th hour for a hot minute now. Most think we’re not gonna make it…luckily, a select few still believe. I’m starting to have serious doubts.

Simply put - one of the best singers and entertainers of the the 60's & 70's. We were all "Space Captains" back then and still am at age 62. One of the best live albums of all time - Mad Dogs and Englishmen - double vinyl album. No one put as much emotion and energy into singing as Joe. He may be gone but not forgotten - his legacy lives on through the music of our time. No fancy digital effects - just raw R&B - so saddened to hear of his passing.

As each day passes I am appalled at the amount of hate & distrust, necessary emphases being placed on differences, rather than what we have in common, on this planet earth, which after all is the only place we have to live together. Yes I do realise the forces of evil who plague what should be Universal Love & Understanding, which we should try to encourage to grow. If we don't find some kind of unity in strength for the good of the whole, we would surely join those who feed negativity, hatred & those who seem to be hell bent on ensuring there is no future in Peace & Understanding for all. Please join me in trying to put out the magic of positivity in the hope that good prevails over darkness.

This was from the movie "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" which was absolutely fantastic. Dig the soulful Central Tulsa gospel piano playing by Leon Russell. He directed the Shelter People. I have a Sinatra album called "Sinatra '65" which has the song "You Brought a New Life to Me" and the piano player was Leon Russell. He used to be on those teen shows in the Sixties with short hair. you know, it was easy to make fun of him back in the day (while also loving his songs), but it's taken me until now to realize what a Fantastic bluesy voice he had. RIP Joe
