The sound of the piranha attacks is what made it so real for me.

the sound of the piranhas was made with dental drills on the water and they got that sound

@benjamindover4337 I understand that it is only a movie. Probably, most of the deaths were fake as well.

Watching Dante's interview about this film, I had the same impression when I saw Spielberg talking about Jaws. That we no longer see creative and talented filmmakers like the old ones who turned low-budget films into cinema classics.

Piranha (1978) - (executive) producer: Roger Corman; it was similar to Orca (1977): a film directed by Michael Anderson; killer whales (I'm thinking about "Free Willy" or Shamu, a classic Sea World creature). "Dark Star (1974)" was that 1974 sci-fi/comedy (now a "cult classic") film that was both directed/produced by John Carpenter ("Halloween (1978)" with a classic Scream Queen, in one Jamie Lee Curtis). I wonder if it had influenced George Luca's "Star Wars (1977 / Episode 4): A New Hope" film: some person had written that Lucas created "Star Wars" with: Buck Rogers tv show, samurai films with stars like, Toshirô Mifune (Mifune was the lead actor in that (Akira) Kurosawa film, "The Hidden Fortress (1958)"; spaghetti westerns (Sergio Leone’s "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)" and black and white romance dramas ("Casablanca (1942)") Humphrey "Bogie" Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Piranha turns 45 today! Made $16 million on a $2 million budget Director Joe Dante and the late Roger Corman executive produce clearly what's a Jaws-copy cat This basks in the fun of it all being a close facsimile It's a campy, gory witty ride into exploitation Dante is clearly in on the joke that every person in here is either crazy, selfish to the point of absurdity or cluelessness in the face of danger Lots of black humor with the characters acknowledging how ridiculous the scenario is they're in True the best portion isn't until the very end but it's still satisfying to watch the carnage The film forged a legacy of its own becoming a cult classic even leading to a sequel, a remake, a second remake, and a sequel to that remake Corman and Dante succeed with plenty of satirical winks having enough self awareness to make a fun viewing Rest in peace to Bradford Dillman and Heather Menzies who passed away in 2017-2018 within months of each other

One of my top favorite horror movies of all time. I just wish someone would of remade this movie the right way instead of how they screwed the newer ones up smh.
