braddock was 32 years old, 9 years older than lewis at the time of this fight. he was 30 years old, 4 years older than max bear, when he took the title from bear. he was considered to be too old for the boxing game, at that time.

It says alot about what a great fighter Braddock was that he floored a prime joe Louis, not everyone could say that, he even beat number one contender tommy farr after this fight. Braddock was very skilled and could really take a punch, he was probably the mentally toughest fighter of all time if you looked at all he's been through

That 1-2 Lewis threw at the end, culminating in that marvellous straight right flush on the jaw of Jimmy, was incredible. Joe Lewis was a freak. Absolutely underrated & mistreated by his country in his latter years which was very sad. I can’t get enough of these old clips.

The left to the body - not quite sure where it landed - and right to the jaw, was brilliant. The effects of the combination were monumental, as Braddock would attest, later. I believe BOTH punches were instrumental in decking Braddock for his only count-out. Louis himself said ( in his books) he used combinations like this one.

The were very weak on defensive technique back then.
@andrewr626 жыл бұрын
So are a lot of fighters today. Then like now you have fighters who are stronger in areas than others. Look at old timers like Benny Leonard in the early 1920'sor Willie Pep in the 1950's. Few fighters today have defensive skills such as these fighters in any era.
@nathanbellamy78706 жыл бұрын
Andrew * that's not true at all. Defensive techniques are far superior today. And I hate the current boxers. In fact the superior defensive techniques are part of the reason boxing is so bad today. It's all about getting really big guys to fight boring defensive styles and wait for the opportunity to cash in on their poor attacking options.
@andrewr626 жыл бұрын
I do disagree. What techniques are you speaking of that exist today that fighters such as Benny Leonard, or Ray Robinson or Will Pep did not use? Bobbing? Weaving? Defensive foot work? Stick and Move? Parring? Rolling with punches? Enlighten us.
@nathanbellamy78706 жыл бұрын
Andrew * firstly were talking heavyweights here. Secondly Ray Robinson is a freak of nature. But it's not rocket science to see how far defensive techniques have come. Sure the rules are the same but it is the speed and knowledge used in putting those techniques into practice. Mate you have your opinion and that is fine. But it doesn't take an expert to see how weak the defensive techniques of the older generations of heavyweights were.
@andrewr626 жыл бұрын
I was talking boxing in general. But my comments apply generally to heavyweights as well. Gene Tunney's defense was indeed very good in the 1920's and appears in every since "modern". Jack Dempsey's "bob and weave defensive techniques and shoulder rolls are very modern and his style has indeed been adopted by several modern heavyweights such as the young Mike Tyson and to some extent Joe Frazier. While I'm not a fan Jack Johnson just could not be hit in his prime. His parring skills are perhaps second none of all time. So I do beg to differ. Plenty of modern heavyweights today are very poor in their defensive techniques.

Tyson in his prime would have destroyed both of them in the first round, but I'm sure it's not fair to compare more advance boxing from the future with inferior boxing of decades past. Tyson had much more head and body movement, and much more lethal and quick punching that landed after an opponent missed.

@jonathanblaze16484 жыл бұрын
Louis would KO Tyson and stop Marciano. Tyson had a weak chin and no heart. Marciano had a bad tendency to cut and probably wouldn't make it to 15 rounds. Holmes is the only one who has a real shot to win. He could outpoint Louis but it would be close. I think Joe would win in a very late round KO. Louis came back to beat both fighters. Schmeling in the rematch. Tyson couldn't take a punch from BUSTER DOUGLAS! No way he could stand up to the brown bomber.
