I'll say what anyone else who stumbles across this vid is probably thinking......'there was a 2022 remake of Joe & Mac?'

I think the big problem with the artstyle of the remake is it reminds me of an advertisement for something like Gardenscapes or Hero Wars. It's got a lot of personality, but at the same time feels sort of empty, like something intentionally off enough to frustrate you into trying the "actual" game.

That mammoth losing its trunk in the original was uncanny. The remake makes it less cursed.

The aesthetics of the pixel art is so far better than the new look.

Interesting how Cronenberg's body horror influenced everything in early 90s, even a prehistoric video game, as can be seen on last level.

I programmed the bosses for the Genesis version (also title and credits screens, etc.) I don't remember there being so many of them! It was certainly a bit of a rush job.

I'm not a fan of the art style of the remake, but I'll give it props for properly designing the bosses so they look good with large sprites and they all look quite unique. Granted, the remake doesn't have to deal with the limitations of the old hardware, but still. Also, the Mammoth gradually losing pieces never made much sense to me, so I'm glad they didn't try to replicate that. It would have been better if the animations didn't look so cheap, though.

I’ll give the remake workers props for their attention to detail. It’s cool that they actually show more of the boss on screen. Also, I never thought the next final boss was a giant snake; it looked like a t-rex with a long neck in the original. I still prefer that version, but the update gave a decent effort

This remake would be more interesting if the SNES exclusive boss which is a demon was a secret boss.

I feel like hitting enemies is missing a subtle sound effect in the new version, something is off, but just in some bosses

I prefer the pixel art. I think what the players need is wide screen and actual new stages and enemies.

And let's not forget the arcade version, where there was also a Lightning and Clone weapons, as well as the fact that each boss fight had Joe or Mac's eyes bulge in fear when they saw the boss. But...there was also a scrappy mechanic: hunger.

Amazing how different some games were from console to console. I played J&M on the SNES and that boss music is a completely different track. Bosses made drastically different sounds when hit hard enough to stun them. I also don't remember the girls sitting around in ropes during the fights. I don't recall having the ability to wind up your weapon and throw a big one either, but it could be I just never knew about it.

Never played either game, but man I love how eerie the bosses are in the original! I feel the limited hardware actually helped to keep it solidly within the uncanny valley, which comes across as undead (as at least some of them are supposed to be). The boss sounds when they get hit may be more unique on the new one, but it lacks the chilling shrillness of the original. I feel that the sound designers on the remake really missed the heart there. Though I suppose that's hard to say: this game has such mood whiplash between creepy and chilling, then immediately jumping to the goofiest, cheesiest poses. the new version adopting an artstyle so closely associated with cheap mobile games didn't help. Keeping the eyes open on death definitely recycled some of that lot creepiness, but not fully. Honestly, my favorite bosses have to be: 1) Skeletal T Rex 2) Brachiosaurus 3) Pteradactyl 4) Titanoboa 5) Mammoth

It's interesting that T-rex in the 1991 version has lips, cause the lips on T-rex recently became relevant

My only gripe with the Remake is that it seems the enemy lacks I-frames (Invincibility Frames), that you can spam Charged Attacks and still always deal damage even after hitting the enemy less than a second ago. The Genesis/SNES versions at least gave the bosses a second of Invincibility before being hurt. The remake looks like it was made with Speedrunners in mind. But other than that, They're both good versions.

Watching this I now realize how superior the SNES version’s graphics was to the genesis. The sound quality was so much better too lol

I prefer the genesis and arcade versions to be brutally honest as a whole,close to toki remastered as well that didn't had the same impact like the original ones! Its like you remake a movie or an animated series from 2D to cgi those flash style animations doesn't work that well! They should also put accompanied with the remake-remastered versions the original ones as well i believe.The sounds also are really hollow close to the classic,you can barely hear the voices and screams and sertain animations are missing when you hit the boss dinos with strong attacks,its like they get lazy or something.For me they should make entire collections from data east,taito like in ps2 with those instead ruining the original ones!

maybe its just nostalgia for me but i preferred the Snes version........if i had to play one of theses versions though be genesis hands down something about the remake is putting me off

Oh man, it's animated in that weird Flash puppet model thingy. When it's used well, it's pretty smooth... but here, it's very noticeable that there's no stretching or any a those dynamic animation techniques, and it feels like we're looking at articulate dolls with very stiff and restricted movement. And the weird thing us, this applies moreso to the humans and playable characters, not so much the dinos, those do look neat. But even Mac and Joe look off with the style.

When I was a kid they only had a handful of snes games in the beginning. I always thought this game looked amazing but I never got to play it. Even at the rental store it was always checked out, I think it still looks great but so does the remake

Never played original game nor remake, but in my opinion, original game looks way more detailed and better than remake. Cause, original has color depth to it and more details. Like on that volcano level. It has animated volcano on the background, while remake has none of that. Also, remake looks flat and colors are too dim.

Having only played the SNES version, this video ironically leaves me wondering how many differences are between the SNES and Genesis versions. Seems there're quite a few!

I firmly believe that some games that have had remakes didn't need them at all, games like Toki, Snow bros or this caveman ninja were graphically perfect in their arcade versions and had great gameplay. I respect all tastes, but I think that being able to play those games in mame, making these versions only has one purpose: to make money from nostalgia. Nice video 👍

for a long time i thought the second to last boss was another dinosaur, especially with those little ones coming out

I admit some of these bosses scared me when I was younger enough to have nightmares... The Skeleton Dino now renamed to Skeletal T-Rex was one of the hardest and scariest bosses because in the original which I have, the Genesis version, if you jived too long he can insta-bite you and quickly too when angry enough! Conversely the Mammoth Boss before him like shown here is the easiest and least frightening despite being the largest boss in the game able to cover 1/2 the screen... but he was such a big target with very little actions in his command roster. For fun or fright, here's my list so far, I don't have the remake yet but from the Genesis: The hardest of all: Skeleton Dino (lethal potential and a swift sudden attack that's not patterned, Very High HP and Defense who never flinched from a single full-charged hit either! I also thought he had a counterattack as well but not sure. His Sudden-Bite attack will hit you even if you're out of the screen, and it hurts a LOT! He killed me the most of all the bosses in the entire game!), 2nd hardest: Green Devil (yes the Final boss is only the 2nd most scariest and reasonably hardest boss in the entire game from being called "Final" Boss, has a nasty counterattack too), 3rd hardest was Spiky the Anklyosaurus due to him never stopping his attacks and also never flinched from a single Full-Charged shot, 4th hardest was the Petradon Mother since she ALWAYS counterattacks with perhaps the best counter of all bosses and the fastest one too. That counter double-dash was a mark of fear at high difficulties and/or low HP. A surprise change in names kind of did get me but one boss entirely threw me off; The Red-Rex was replaced by a giant snake boss? That's new....

The art style looks like one of those flash games from the early 2000s

I'm a sucker for games that use a hand-drawn style, though I wish their movement was a bit more... natural, maybe? I'm not sure how to put it, but it's a little too fluid, like they're made of rubber or something. Other than that, I think it looks pretty cool.

Reminds me of the new Battletoads, something that appeared and disappeared like a fart in the wind. I don't know how you went from super Battletoads with decapitations and boobs, to whatever that new remake is. I don't know how you remake Joe and Mac, and have it seem to run three times as slow and much more simple?

I remember playing the game back when I was a kid, but never beat it. I rented the game at the local Blockbuster, and had to give it back... I reached the final level, but never beat the final boss. Though I don't remember being able to "charge attack".

I'm not a fan of the art style of the remake. Mayne it's because I grew up to the original Joe and Mac, but I find the original has more style and class to everything. Truthfully they should've done the remake in the same style just smoothed out for new resolution
