The best I ever saw.. 11/28/71, he was on the bench recovering from injury when the Jets replacement was injured, so he had to play. They were down by 24 and He marches them downfield 4 times.. 3x for tourchdowns, the last time the ball slipped through Caster's hands in the end zonce with less than 30 seconds.. greatest comeback I ever saw.

Anyone who questions Namath doesn’t understand what he was expected to accomplish. He was expected to (1) put football fans in the seats in New York, (2) put football fans in the seats in the AFL, (3) promote the team and league with casual/non-fans through his non-football activities, (4) set passing records, (5) legitimize the AFL and push a merger with the NFL, and (6) win the Super Bowl. The owner would encourage him to stay out at night and make the paper for his playboy nightlife. And then he had to practice and play. His job wasn’t just winning games. He had to win games in spite of everything else. And he did all of it. Respect.

I have loved Joe since the 1960s & I still do . I was so happy when the Jets won the Championship Game & the Superbowl . To me Joe will always be the best Quarterback & he will always be my favorite . Plenty of times when he got injured he would stay in the games. I will love Broadway Joe always 🏈💚❤

Joe was my hero from as far back as I can remember. I recall my brother getting his football card in 1973 and going apeshit over it. I was a little kid, but he was the MAN.

Behind Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath was one of the greatest QB’s of that era.

My hero as a little kid. People will knock Namath because he didn't have the greatest numbers, which he didn't. But what he did have more than anyone else was leadership and moxie. Like the "Guarantee" before the Super Bowl while he was hanging out poolside with the women in Miami. It wasn't calculated, just that he lost his patience with the beat writers that didn't believe the hapless Jets had a chance against Unitas and the almighty Colts. Ironic that Shula's loss sent him to the Dolphins. As they say, the rest is history.

Something about watching Namath speak. It’s like putting together Clint Eastwood and dusty rhodes. He had the brash do it my way attitude of Clint but the swagger, rhythm and flow of the American Dream. Dudes an original. Very reckless on and off the field but one of a kind nonetheless.

Imagine if Namath had had both (a) the same knees he had while a junior in college, and (b) the benefit of the pass-friendly NFL rule changes that were instituted in '74 and '78? His career stats would have been much more impressive, that's for certain, and he almost certainly would have made it back to the Super Bowl at least once. If not in '69, then definitely in '72, when the Jets had a young John Riggins in the backfield.

This was before the heavy steroid usage. An everyman can relate to these players physiques. Maynard's body is what a body of a young, fit athlete NOT on steroids looks like. Love this old footage.

Even though I'm a Life Long Viking Fan, as a kid, I was always Joe Willie Namath throwing to OJ. My life long best friend; even to this day, was OJ in our mean Ass Sand Lot Football Games. In the 1960's & early 1970's, Joe Namath was the Michael Jordan of his era.

Greatest sporting event I ever saw in person.

in 72 , the jets had the best offence in football . they'rs defence was one of the worst against the pass. the defence was old and by the middle of the season they were beat up by injuries. but that offence was as good as any in football history.

I grew up in Baltimore. I hated Joe for years. I cheered when Stan White dislocated his shoulder. But now in 2020 I love the guy. The pansies that play this game now have nothing on Joe and others that played in the 50s 60s and 70s. Real studs all of them. Time heals wounds.

The Jets only won because of a stupid lateral by Lamonica (the Raiders would have won this game if they had just carefully continued to advance the ball to the goal line instead of this stupid pass) and also by the ridiculous rules that saw this game played in Shea Stadium instead of Oakland---The Raiders had a better record (12-2 vs 11-3 for the Jets) and also defeated the Jets in the regular season ("Heidi" game)---the AFL had this archaic rule that saw the title game rotated from West to East each year instead of being based on record/merit. If this game had been played in Oakland there is no way the Jets would have won--even the weather conditions alone conspired against the Raiders that day
