The season 1 finale of Lowrider Roll Models features the story of our very own Editor-in-Chief, Joe Ray.
Upon graduating high school, Joe was granted a full scholarship for a Commercial Arts program at a local university. It was the things dreams were made of, and art was what he breathed and lived for, so for him it was good news. From color palette to form and function, art brought forth a new sense of passion for our featured guest, but of course, life had other plans for him.

To be successful you have to success in succeeding.. To have success in succeeding you have to be successful in finding success.. To be successful in finding success is 100% up to you.. Having a vision faith passion patience and really believing in yourself is only the beginning.. When you are able to combine all of it together, others will see that. Some will do everything they can to ruin hurt and destroy you; while others will accept love appreciate and try to out do you.. Just remember: when it's time to shine you're gonna shine like a diamond in the sun.. I wish everyone nothing but the best on their journey to being successful.. God bless

My brother had a El Dorado like that and it had a custom green paint job, back in the 70’s before hydraulics and air bags. My brother put 100 lbs bean sacks in the trunk as my dad owned a Mexican food distribution Co. I have a custom low rider 41 Buick and a custom low rider 62 Continental Lincoln.

Mr. Ray I just want to say thanks for sharing your story. I have only been reading LRM for about 20 years or so, but I will tell you "Dressed to Kill' and The "Vegas" car were both some of the most influential cars of my past. I have a '79 T-Bird and I honestly picture your Vegas car when I look at it. Thanks for being a "role model" and keep up the good work with LRM. Peace.

I remember when your club became a club.. I remember seeing them on Hubbard and Bradshaw. I was one of the first ones to do custom paint on my 63 SS with crush velvet interior, truck and under the hood. That car was painted in a garage on Indiana and Olympic by James in tangerine gold pearl with flaked sides and top.. the first to also have a miniature Muriel on the trunk of an island with flying birds also in pearl's. The paint used was aircraft which I believe is called emeron. My favorite was my 66, was a hell of a hopping machine.. hydros I did myself in my garage, cut outs done at Atlantic mufflers on Atlantic, I was the first to do machine cups and donuts machined at funeral casket foundry on 3rd and Eastern, hero lines were copper water pipes to never bust as hoses did in those days done my my dad. All hydro parts we got in Pico Rivera off of Norwalk Blvd and Slauson. I was the first to use truck 3 quarter ton coils to hop which other didn't know I was using to beat them.. memories... lol... never did another low rider after 75 caprice which I got from Jones Chevrolet in Whittier.. there lots of other cars between my 63 and the caprice.. we used to be escorted out of uptown as that was hot rod territory.. out of Monterey Park from Andy's pool hall... memories memories lol.. I still had 69 impala that's sat for nearly 25 years I got from a lady in Fullerton.. one of a kind copo which is why I've done nothing to it.... anyhow.. your 68 is nice.. simple and clean.. of course I do know who has a FB 68 in showroom condition thats been parked for nearly 40 years..

JoeRey I remember when I was in high school < Garfield High Class of 82 > I used to have a 64 Impala. I use to cruise Whittier Blvd man those were the good old day's. I tell the youngsters of today that I grew in a time that Lowriding was accepted. When music was music. I was Approach by buy a member of Technique's car club. They would meet at Anthony Loya's parking lot on Wednesday night its funny how other car clubs would cruise by in regular car and take pictures of your rides and speed off sometimes the Sargent of arms would roll out and try to catch them.. There was so much competition out there that you had to step it up. I remember when Lifestyle would meet up at the mobile station on Atlantic and Beverly. I had a friend named Herbie who was from lifestyle he cruised in a Lincoln Continental Joe Rey. Sadly my 64 Impala was taken out by a drunk driver. My next ride was 71 Chevelle. I went from low and slow to speed but ended back with fixing a Mini Truck and joining up with < Just for Looks > we had the older truck style Toyota's and Datsun's before they changed to Nissan. When I was President of the Club we were approached by Councilman Richard Alattoye to hold car washes and even a Car Show at Wilson high school in El Serreno to raise money for Christmas gifts for the needy children of East LA and Boyle Heights. Wow what great times we had with other truck clubs. JoeRey do you remember when you had to register your club name with the council that meet up at Lake lake and see other clubs kicking back having Bar BQs and showing off their rides. Great Times by for now. I really like the Lowrider Garage series keep up the the great work JoeRey.

Lifestyle car club are legends in the lowridering game-period. I got into in lowridering in 92 and started buying magazine's every since. And it is my dream one day to finally own a lowrider. I want to spend $15 to $60 thousand on a car and enjoy every bit of it. But lowridering has a sad part about it. Everybody can't afford to spend $15,000-$100,000 on a car and that creates, "JEALOUSY". Some people are only in it for the popularity and want to be noticed. Some people want to just make a lot of money off of it. All of this hurt's lowridering so bad and it directs it into a bad direction. Lowridering is a hobby not a show or glamour-effect-facts. People are in love with these cars and they use these cars to have fun with their families and friends. Lowridering is about respect for themselves, others and the whole community. And it is sad that you have a bunch of ediot's that try to "fuck it up for everybody". It suck's and I'm just trying to keep it real. Let me give a shout out to lifestyle legendary cars like Twilight and Alladin. Lifestyle Car Club still remains on top of lowridering to this very day, since 1992-FACTS. You don't know, you better ask somebody!!!

Idk y. My love for the lowriders is crazy. I don't have one but I plan to. My dream lowrider is a beautiful blue 63 impala ss convertible, 13 inch 72 spoke rims, fender skirt, blue white under glow, black interior. But lil by lil I'll get there eventually, hopefully sooner then later. But for right now im excited to say that my dad has a friend whose mom is trynna get rid of her 92 caprice and she might sell it to me. Like at this point it's not a question of "if" but "when". I already got a mental blueprint of the car. But I wanna get into pinstipping and all those kinda of things bc they look cool and even if I'm not good at it rn I wanna practice so ill get better. Lowriders is and will forever be my life and my culture.

Back when Sunny was editor my high school friend was one, of many, photographers for low rider magazine. Those were my sinning days- from seeing the original War members play, in ELAC stadium, to gig, after gig after gig. I will say this; it was some ride. Lowrider magazine has come along way since Sunny Madrid. They’ve really have cleaned it up its more professionally put together today. I’m pretty sure there’s some wheeling and dealing going on not to say that never goes away. Today, I can say, I’m not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m rolling with the real role model Jesus. I have no regrets of saying; I’m a believer in Christ. No show car can save us from death only Jesus can I’ve been saved by the blood of Christ. My name is Beloved and I’m a role model for Jesus Christ.

I remember Sunny Madrid when my uncle Carlos Sanches (RIP 🙏) use to be a promoter for him and hang up posters for the shows in the early 80's. I remember going with him as a kid to hang them and went to one of the shows and first seen Joe Ray's cars (Hollywood and Dress to Kill) there. We (people) wouldn't have what we now without GOD (which is life) in which he gave us free will to do what we do. Which is why we disappoint him with our bad choices in life.
