Psychology is still in this weird place between science and pseudo-science. Trying to categorise all sorts of interconnected phenomenas from an incomplete map of the human psychology without having a complete picture of all the environmental/genetic factors that might come in play. Focusing too much on the symptoms instead of the potential external causes of these things. Take for instance the high prevalence of kids getting diagnosed with ADHD and put on medication. Instead of wondering if the environment we put them into might cause these symptoms, we conclude that the children themselves are what's wrong and need to be fixed and medicated.

I think it's really easy to say that someone shouldn't be taking medication for being bipolar when you've only been around them for a couple of hours. You have no idea what can happen when someone is in a manic state, or a depressed state when they are bipolar. I'm not saying that everyone who is bipolar is a danger to themselves or others, but we have no idea what that looks like behind closed doors for him when he's with his family. I'm sure that the medication would have some effect on his creativity, and he has decided it's not worth it, but I doubt his family always feels the same all the time.

Totally agree, was surprised more ppl didn’t say that in the comments… you hit the nail on the head though! If you only interact with someone during a manic episode then of course it’s hard to see why someone would prescribe mood stabilizers! I do find these kinds of convos tough bc I don’t think anyone, not even Kanye, should have to make a major medical decision while being constantly scrutinized by the international media and the general public. Unfortunately it means that a lot of stigma and misinformation can get spread as well, even if done unintentionally. It’s a lot to ask of our podcast hosts to expect them to provide a nuanced, unbiased and evidence based perspective on mental health topics, so no shade to Joe lol My sibling has bipolar II and I was living with them during their first manic episode - they were an artist at the time and during that time they definitely made very compelling work. However during those nine months, they were sleeping 2-3 hours a night tops, going into enormous debt (which they are still paying off over TEN years later…), destroyed nearly all of their platonic and romantic relationships, contracted an STI, and spent so much of their time making art that they lost their day job. And the entire time, I just had to watch it happen, because my sibling just could not see what was so obvious to anyone who listened to their rambling for longer than five minutes. Then, just like that, they fell into a depressive episode so severe that they were catatonic. they didn’t speak for nearly a week. They were absolutely in danger of hurting themselves, and THAT is why treatment is so crucial. Medication AND some sort of therapy are the gold standard for these kinds of disorders- the efficacy for both goes wayyy down if you do not do them at the same time. It’s a LOT harder to participate in a therapy session if you’re manic or severely depressed. My sibling still struggles with adhering to their meds, just like everyone I’ve ever met with bipolar disorder.But that is one of the major things that they work on with their therapist- it’s a way of supporting someone who is trying to manage a serious chronic condition. Joe’s argument for not taking medication is one that I bet plays out in the mind of every person with bipolar disorder, because from what I hear, mania can feel pretty fucking nice at times. If you want to avoid the lowest lows you may also lose the highs that mania can make people feel. But it’s not about how good your music is during a manic episode, it’s a question of whether those episodes are getting in the way of your overall physical, mental and social health and wellbeing.

The way Joe understands and supports Kanye in that mental sense, I really wonder how he feels about Tech N9ne. Because the way he described Kanye here is so true in the exact same sense for Tech if not even more for him. Especially his old shit, Tech could use his twisted ass mind and twist the entire energy in his music or the room itself and it still be super lit. Every single album is like a new color and all revolving around that crazy unique vibe of a color. Some can be really fucking dark but he tends to give off this vibe in a message that he's on this Demon/Angel shit, oh man. He's so slept on still to this day. Can you imagine a podcast with Joe and Tech? The combination of those 2 minds could possibly be one of the best podcasts so far.

The thing about mental illness that a lot of people miss is that it's technically not considered an "illness" unless it seriously affects functioning and quality of life. So even if a person has symptoms of an illness, such as mania, it's not categorized as such until/if it's affecting those life domains.

@robertovaccari7078 Жыл бұрын
What joe probably doesn't understand is how far down that illness can take kanye, and how hard it can be for people around him to deal with him if not medicated. Mental illness is more complicated than the dichotomy crazy/normal. It comes and goes and happens gradually in many cases and, if it is not stopped in some way, things can get pretty rough. Although it's true that strong medication tends to inhibit creative process in many people, unfortunately progressing in your mental illness doesn't improve your creativity either, this has been proven. Creativity and mental illness are sometimes co-occuring, but when the mental illness gets too bad, the creative part is also jeopardized most of the time. There are several well known case, Syd Barrett and many others. A non-famous non-billionaire Kanye would by all means be considered 'crazy' and I'm pretty sure, if he wasn't treated he would get really really bad. There's a difference between being eccentric and quirky and slowly losing your mind, and Kanye west over the last few years seems to be falling under the latter category

Yes it will. Idk if you have ever taken bipolar meds, but it changes absolutely everything. Kanye, his family and his doctor can probably decide how serious it is.
@grada4ever3 жыл бұрын
Yes it absolutely can be destroyed. Either directly from the medication suppressing the best unique traits about the person taking it, OR (and this is even more common) because of the branding of it as “mental Illness”, the person takes a massive self esteem hit and thinks their positives are primarily negatives and never ends up discovering who they really are and how to use it for great things. This is rampant and something the medical community is just not wired to understand.
