As a regenerative farmer myself I appreciate his take. We're pretty small scale but we use rabbits and ducks to keep pests down, and gives us a use for grass etc that are otherwise "waste products". We generate our own compost and fertilizer and are able to feed a large number of families in our local area. If we need something we don't make, we trade with other small farms so that in network we have no outside need for any outside input. And being in the US South West we have about 10 months for a growing season and can easily utilize greenhouse technology for the 2 other months. Regenerative Agricultural farming can reduce carbon in the atmosphere FAR more than any of these "green initiatives" because not only does it reduce output but actually removes free carbon in the environment. Plus it's more sustainable long term than the commercial factory method of farming which destroys the soil and leads to dustbowls etc. Simple crop rotation for what plants input/take from the soil, good bed planning, and maximizing the effectiveness of what naturally occurs, such as microbial symbiotic relationships with the plants etc goes a LONG way.

Can we have more Will Harris? I could listen to him explain farming methods all day...

The first way to reduce costs for meat and eggs from a regenerative farm is to find one close to you. Our model relies on our customers coming to us. We don’t grow corn but our supplier is two miles away. We lost money for two years and are breaking even now. It’s all family labor, the only machine we use is a small tractor. It’s very very labor intensive. Any profit is put back into our operation. Until our farm store is up we sell to local stores close by. Looking forward to some profit soon!

The only thing that prevents mass starvation is six inches of top soil and timely rains.

As one of the people who doesn’t look like him, or have a similar life story, but hangs out with him and talks shop at the conferences about how we solve these problems together, I really don’t think he is saying what the title says he’s saying.

I just moved to Georgia and went to visit his farm. Beautiful....and at first glance, you can feel it is different than anything you've encountered. We bought a ton of grass fed meats to take home and had a few burgers from their kitchen. Fantastic. I'd encourage everyone to go see his farm and take a tour. Its really eye opening to how destructive we are with current farming methods.

When referred to his costs being x% percent higher than industrial he forgot to account for all the externalized costs of big ag: poor health, environmental degradation costs, increased health care costs, costs on infrastructure, etc. Regenerative/Organic/ Sustainable farming doesnt pass the buck. Factory farming methods are only cheaper cause the tax payer foots the bill. Your taxes go to subsidize corn, soybeans, wheat. That all goes to commodity crops ie grains. Grass and grazing animals receives zero subsidies, of course the farmer and consumer has to pay more for the food!

people need to start asking themselves, how much did i spend on whole foods (minimal processing, not the store) then ask yourself how much did i spend on phones, internet, gaming, gambling, alcohol. and all the rest of modern life's essentials. If you look at the effort it takes to grow food and get it to your table, it it pretty cheap, but you need to remember that the big grocery chains are making huge profits while the producers have to keep cutting costs because the chain stores dictate the price. If you consider how big a farm needs to be for a farmer to make a living these days , it is obscene. They are forced to grow more and more food for less profit each year. which means more industrial inputs and chemicals. food production is now being driven into the hands of multinational corps. and we all know how that ends up going. just my observations. from Australia

I think this is one of the most interesting conversations he's had and most important topic too. A point that wasn't mentioned was what Sahd Guru brought to the show. The current farming system is actually destroying the land. The bacteria biom in the soil is dying due to the fertilizers.

What's destroying farming is out of area investors buying farmland. Once pension funds and billionaires own all the land in rural America it will start looking like the hunger games in this country

the fun part about running out of land, this management system has it's eyes on using deserts. literal deserts, where other methods are leading to using more and more forested land.

I'm so blessed to live 40 miles away from white oak pastures. I only buy thier beef from whole foods and the quality is excellent. Mostly 90/10 grass-fed beef but there's usually around 15-20% fat despite it saying 10. Thier steaks are great, extremely lean but fresh.

We own an organic beef operation and he is 100% right it’s at least 30% more to operate our cattle operation that it is for the industrial method but they’re literally putting in hormones and medicated antibiotics every time they eat it’s full of it in their food basically just eating steroids and antibiotics and if you think that doesn’t affect the meat you’re eating you’re crazy our cattle don’t get as big don’t grow as fast but it’s 100% natural organic in your body process is the meat way better and it taste way better and the cattle live twice as long in a non-stress healthy environment then stacked on top of each other in knee-high shit just waiting to get a rod in the head

The $1/pound chicken from a “corporate” farm has MASSIVE hidden costs! Too many to go into in a comment. 1) health consequences 2) corporate welfare from government 3) congressional corruption 4) fraudulent weight (plumping)....on and on and on.

Will Harris is using a Systems Model to understand his production. It looks for the feedback loops, it is aware of the inputs and outputs and is always working to make a more sustainable system as a result.

As far as egg production, I would like people to be aware, that chickens in industrial production live horrific lives. Cages stacked on top of cages 5 high. Their waste at the top dropping down on the chickens beneath. They live and die in the cages. I worked in a chicken house for a few years while I was in high school. 286000 chickens were in the house. If you can afford to, please buy eggs from cage free or free range producers.

Also around where I live anyway in Northern Minnesota is finding a farmer who will sell to you they would rather truck their beef to the cities where they can sell for prices that are twice what we pay up here which I can't blame them for.

I pay more for grass fed/grass finished beef because it tastes better and, in my opinion provides a better quality of nutrition, i.e. it is minus all the added hormones and fillers found in feedlot beef. I do the same for chicken, when I can find it. I also find, personally, that better quality beef is more satisfying, so I don't eat as large a piece.

man i always wanted to be a hipster😅. I am right in that generation, right in that age hahaha. But I never was! Can’t grow a beard, wasn’t able to become snobby enough about hipster indie folk music which I liked a lot, but also really enjoyed 1990’s rap metal and regular metal and rap and country too. Could never pull the trigger on trying to afford the hipster fashions because I’m a oenny pincher by nature😂. ayyyyeeee but for a while there.... in college, circa 2009, yes I was quite enamored with some of the hipster things. And I personally think it’s just like anything else.... there’s shitty hipsters and decent hipsters and all in between just like most or all other groups of people.

I live in a small farm and community and watch all these hipster farmers move in and take over farms after these industrial farmers have retired and they are not real farmers, they simple do not know how to farm correctly, their animals are sick, they have more waste than anyone I’ve seen as they grow but don’t have someone to sell to, so most of it ends up in the compost pile, its a real shame. They all want 10x the amount for a tomato as well. No-one is going to be buying 1 tomato for $5.00. There has to be a in between.

Something not touched on in this clip is food security - most of the base inputs that are not oil derived come from outside the US, and are concentrated in a few nations, some of which are at best neutral and more often hostile to the US. Case in point - one of the major inputs for farming is Ammonia, and Russia accounts for 22% of world exports.

It's quite simple. grass fed beef takes longer to get to weight and for grass fed to work you have to use the right breed that gains fat marbling getting finished with grass or hay. "finished" means being in a stockyard getting fat and getting larger for the meat to be a certain size. And grass fed beef does not have the flavour profile we want.

He is clearly a smart man, but his making fun of Stuart Varney wasn't fair. He went on a 3 minute segment and then wanted to give a 15 minute background instead of just answering the questions. Just like here. He's one of those guys that you can't pop into the office and get a yes or no answer from.

“Regenerative” agriculture has been debunked already. The peer review of Harris’s own study (Ecosystem Impacts and Productive Capacity of a Multi-Species Pastured Livestock System ) concluded that although “regenerative” agriculture does in fact reduce up to 66% the emissions it would take 2.5 more land. So no.

Anyone with the ability to conceptualize, and apply reason, can see that ultimately there will one day be no more fossil fuels to burn for energy. Coal, natural gas, oil, these will eventually be depleted. Long before the point where fossil fuels cease to exist, their cost of extraction, and their rarity, will make the cost of using them prohibitive for food production as farmers currently use them. Another thing to consider in the industrialized, commoditized, linear, vertically integrated food production model that *Big Ag* controls, is that most of the inputs are subsidized by the federal government. The prices of diesel fuel, gasoline, kerosene, lubricants, nitrogen fertilizers, phosphorus, potassium, lime, corn, soybeans, wheat, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, nematocides, antibiotics, have all been kept artificially low in price in order for consumers to be able to purchase *Cheap Food.* If the subsidies were eliminated immediately, then Will Harris's model of raising beef cattle would be very close in cost, if not slightly less expensive, then the *Big Ag* model.
