You can plainly see where his technique weak. He never studied classical guitar seriously and that has left a big gap in his knowledge. Until you understand classical (generally speaking) and Segovia specifically you don't know the instrument and it's greatest strength. Once you learn that you will probably give up playing with steel strings because they are so limiting.

@@johnparker7784 Can you link to any classical guitarists that use as wide an array of techniques as Satriani does?

@@digbyinthedoghouse7455 Yeah it is impossible. Tone shaping with electric guitar is huge. And other techniques too. Satriani and Segovia are master players but with different kind of instruments. They can't play vice versa. I like both of course.

Good stuff, another person wrote he could keep up with his chords, but lead licks are tuff, no kidding,,,, I've learned alot by ear, and these u-tube clips are great! they're really helping me with my technique. this guy is great! and there ARE a lot of great guitar legends and nobodies out there (working) Satch does this 24/7, take a look at his schudule,,,, where's he find the time to do clips! thanks Joe!!!

@paqman78 Truth be told, they're mostly power chords. Satch's rhythm stuff isn't overly complex, which is part of the brilliance of his music. To date, the rhythm line in Summer Song is one of my favorites to play... I hardly even care about the lead, because the rhythm just moves so much.. and none of it is difficult.

They're both very listenable by soloist standards, a lot of guitarists like Jason Becker are incredible, but not very listenable, the two you mentioned are both brilliant. I have a lot of buckethead, he's an excellent guitarist to whom I enjoy listening, and I have even more Satriani. Personally I think Buckethead's a better shredder(fast playing), but Satriani's a more diverse musician. Both are brilliant live, as you'd expect.

some of his tips are simple but yet effective when applying to the song..that what matters to me..application and choice of notes when plaing..good phrasing..and control of guitar..some guitarists spend time to know super mind blowing speed.but speed enough cdnt get you anything when talking about the essence of guitar playing?right?

Dude that 1st lick is so easy (the pick tapping), but I remember the first time I heard it I thought "how is he making that tapping sound?" LOL I bought the album when it first came out in 1987 and remember that was the first of many "what the hell was that?" moments :) Please check out my version when you have a chance!
