I could remember several years ago, I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Was actually diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. This is something that really need to be use globally to help people with related health challenges.

I'm 56 and have suffered for years with addiction, anxiety and severe ptsd, I got my panic attacks under control myself years ago and they have come back with a vengeance, I'm constantly trying to take full breaths but can't get the full satisfying breath out, it's absolutely crippling me, i live in Germany. I don't know much about these mushrooms. Really need a reliable source!! Can't wait to get them.

One of my favorite sayings about mental health and specifically anxiety is: Genetics load the gun and environment pulls the trigger. You can can be predisposed to mental health battles but grow up in a healthy atmosphere and never experience these issues. On the other hand grow up in chaos and you’re likely to manifest some sort mental health issues. Take care of your children folks…love them, support them give them the tools that you didn’t have. Glad Joe and Theo addressed this topic, it is often swept under the rug.

I've never been diagnosed but I clearly have constant anxiety. And it makes sense when I'm told stories after my mom passed in 2021. Being smuggled into a country at night on a boat, doesn't help. My mom lived with anxiety all the time. It's so obvious now. She was always on the move, couldn't stay still, had to be doing SOMETHING all the time. She hated staying home too. She would push me and my brother so much. Eventually my brother started studying medicine and shit and was telling my mom what she was dealing with and to see a doctor. She tried to change but ultimately stayed in her ways until the end. Love her so much. Best person I've ever known, hands down. Best mother I could've hoped for. But yeah, she passed down this anxiety. I'm always thinking too much and it lead to being diagnosed with depression, taking meds, etc. No wonder I can't stand still either. Boredom gives me anxiety.

As an older adult, I learned a valuable lesson. I saw this in myself and many others. If you are faced with a problem that you don't know how to solve and don't have the tools or knowledge to solve it, you will become anxious. If you stay in that situation day after day, you will be trained to immediately become anxious. Think of a teacher demanding homework or testing on subjects that weren't properly taught. Or a boss or client who are unable to explain their needs but will hold you responsible anyway. Once in a while, it happens, but if it's every day, you have to change the dynamic. Get away if you can't fix it. This isn't good for you long term.

Theo hit the nail on the head with his explanation of depression and SSRIs, for me at least! I just switched from Zoloft to Wellbutrin earlier this month (I was having annoying side effects), but an SSRI basically keeps your head above water, and creates a baseline for you. You still have to do the work to maintain your physical health and even your mental health to an extent, but without it, it’s like there’s an anchor tied to your leg that makes it 10x harder to stay afloat.

I’m really glad to hear Theo be so open about his depression and taking meds. As well, to hear that Joe has changed his outlook on mental health disorders from a weakness of character or will and discipline to no longer believing that. Time and time again I still battle with that belief in my head, that I have depression and anxiety because I’m weak willed or I’m just not doing enough. It’s the shame that comes with this illness , and all it does is prevent you from getting better. Glad to hear Joe has changed his outlook.

I still believe much of depression can be significantly improve by being disciplined, Watch Andrew Huberman podcast on the AMCC region of the brain, it’s the hub for many many neurotransmitters, And it literally gets bigger by engaging in behaviours that take discipline. Disapline improved my depression significantly, I had force myself to do things i would have rathered not doing. And no, you’re weak for not having discipline, It’s a learned skill, Just like climbing a mountain is a learned skill, Not being able to climb doesn’t make you less valuable than anyone, It’s okay.

Anxiety, from my personal experience, is not something you get rid of. It's something you learn to mitigate and live with but it will always be there. I've gotten panic attacks where the trigger was the idea that it's possible for me to have a panic attack. Once you have one you're more likely to have another. It's a never ending cycle. Learning coping strategies is your best defense against them. Getting diagnosed with them was a great thing for me because I learned that I wasn't in fact dying and was actually dealing with something that thousands upon thousands of people deal with everyday. Having the ability to go "I'm having a panic attack right now, let's just get through this and it will eventually stop" is a great tool to have in your toolbox in the fight against anxiety.

I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression when I was in my 30s and it makes alot of things make sense for why I was the way I was in my younger years. I've been prescribed medication and sometimes even prescribed medications that would create worse effect when working with one another. Like your guest said , it's like a constant battle throughout the day. I can still do what I have to , but over time it does take alot of confidence to push through. That's why exercising is so important because it gives me a sense of confidence and that would make me narcissistic, but the narcissism is to combat the depression. That's me tho. Thanks for the information. 😁

The good thing about LSD is its non addictive, the best experience I've EVER had on ANY drug was LSD, I've been so happy my face literally hurt from smiling so much for so many hours, but but once the trip wears off the last thing I'm thinking about is dropping another trip, you need time to recover, the closest I'd ever had trips together were a week apart but usuallv months or years, having said that it's been 10yrs since the last time but certainly would again given the right time and setting

I’m really happy to hear Rogan a lot more open minded on this stuff. I’ve started taking SSRIs and was very hesitant mainly due to the stigma around it. I want to be tougher and be able to be proactive in taking care of my mental health, but when you’re really in a rut it’s hard to gain motivation to do anything. I’ve already noticed a huge difference in my outlook on life and feel a lot better equipped moving forward to take care of myself, not allow myself to overthink too much etc. I’m on a low dose so hopefully I can stop taking them at some point and move forward with a better mindset.

Mental health issues can be absolutely genetic. Neural connections are formed through traumatic experiences which literally rewires your brain and gene combinations pass this down. You’ve got a huge nerve running from your brain to your gut, heart and lungs which can heighten emotional responses. I have a Psych degree and been teaching for nearly 20 years and what Theo said about alcoholism and his shirt analogy is fucking profound. You’re a treasure mate 👍

I used to take lexapro for depression, suicidal ideation, then quetiapine for substance abuse depressive disorder. Those drops in emotion, sudden rage and drastic changes like that started because I tried to stop the meds. But I continued being off of them and stood that way cause I realized it was making it worse than before I took them, while I was on them daily though, I felt like happy but for no reason. Then I started doing shrooms the correct way and man was that the best decision I could have taken (not encouraging people to take them, it’s my experience) but yea the difference being that shrooms made me understand and see the ‘why’ I was in a bad mental space, and made me see it in a different light. I’m now off of the things that made me the worse version of myself

SSRIs made me comfortable with living a shltty, sad, depressing, life . SSRIs are a bandaid fix to anxiety and depression and should be last resort after lifestyle change, therapy, exercise, and other ways of natural healing. Shrooms should be prescribed for depression and anxiety not these pills that can make you fat and content with being a depressed bum. Great comment man

@@spencerrichmond5845 Been on them for years and they've drastically improved my productivity and general state of mind. Yes, you still need discipline to workout and eat healthy along with the SSRIs. It's important to improve your general health and circumstances to your best abilities, and I was able to do this due to a baseline "levelling" from the pills. I do not hit the dramatic lows I did before I took them. These pills do not work for everyone, though. To the OP: Make sure you're tapering off this medication correctly. Any attempt to stop "cold turkey" may shock the system and contribute to the mood swings you've been experiencing.

I didn’t feel it was right to be on medication. I can definitely get behind genetics and environment playing a role in bringing out anxiety. My mom is definitely why I am the way I am. What I have found is that people who are highly intelligent, and ate “thinkers” tend to deal more with anxiety/depression. Sometimes when you try to find an answer to a problem that basically has no solution, it causes anxiety. That prolonged anxiety then leads to depression. Been there done that unfortunately.. I agree that beyond genetics it can be a learned response from your parents actions in dealing with their problems.

People that don't have clinical depression will never understand what those of us that do have it go through. People just can't understand that physically painful aching at the center of you that comes outta nowhere. If they've never experienced it they put it in the same catagory as, just feeling bummed out, or sad. But for some of us it's a total lack of meaning, and motivation.
