I’m thinking that Valachi felt betrayed by the family. That kiss of death was a sign he was doomed. He was so paranoid he killed a civilian in prison. He had nothing to lose a $100000 price on his head a murder charge ,,,, nothing more to lose. Revenge may be small recompense.

@citypopradioFM23 күн бұрын
Valachi mistook him for someone else and freaked out as he was understandably paranoid that he was going to be killed at any time. So he made a grave mistake. If you're sitting vulnerable under the very real threat of being murdered, it makes why one would react that way. The guy was likely just walking toward his direction while minding his own business since it is a prison yard, after all.
@errickjones499523 күн бұрын

Very well-told story! ... However the [1972] movie (or perhaps, docudrama), *The Valachi Papers* (albeit, having seen it but once, years ago), is rather less-compelling (if not downright boring). I particularly liked and enjoyed the [more convincing] performance of the actor who portrayed Valachi here (rather than of Charles Bronson's _very_ dry performance in the film). Should anyone here happen to know of the actor's name ... well, let's just say all I can offer is: _" ... Lemmee make ya an offa' you canna' refuse ... Or else ya can fa'get about it!"_ ... Thanks in advance!

Rats weren't common at all until the early 90's onward when government technology, DNA, and RICO indictments became prominent. It used to be that guys in that life would do their time, come out, and enjoy a prominent status for handling their sentences like men especially since the prison terms weren't like now. Since RICO, the government can dangle 30, 50, or 100-year sentences and flip guys who simply couldn't do that time with no hope of beating the case. Up to then, convictions relied on witnesses and hard evidence which were harder to come by against people with power to bribe, threaten, and otherwise make people go away from taking the stand. It's simply harder to get away with crimes these days and even belonging to a criminal enterprise, even if they don't have evidence that someone participated in a crime themselves, can mean hefty sentences. Guys simply can't and won't do it anymore so they become rats. Still, there are plenty of guys, even to this day, who don't rat and do their time but you're not going to hear about them nearly as much.
