I greatly admire Edward Said. Here he is still passionate about the Palestinian people, and about going beyond the CNN and ignorant war drum beat that arises seemingly endlessly in the US. He argues for humanism, for understanding history, and to avoid the mistakes of empire and imposing brute force to solve problems when it only destroys people and countries. He was a courageous man, an American citizen, a scholar, and a humanist. This is perhaps his valedictory address. He is as passionate as ever, and to die only a few months later of his long fought cancer. What a great man he was! totally admirable scholar, humanist, American and Palestinian.

No doubt his is one of sanest voices of Humanism, preaching moral ethics, social Justice and fair play. Pity his critics misconstrue his anti imperialism with anti-Americanism or anti-Westrenism.

Hey Khalid! You’re on point. But I think there’s a subtle meaning which I construe whenever I read his book and watch his lectures on Orientalism. I think we shouldn’t limit the term Orient to specific geographical lands. An Orient is in general anyone who was colonised and suffocated. Based on this premise, America in itself is an Orient as it has also been a victim of European colonisation. What are your thoughts on it?

One of the greatest minds there ever existed on the side of justice. There was a time when President Obama or the then Senator Obama used to feel Professor Said made a lot of sense.Yeah, but then at the time the president himself was for the most part on the side of justice and not the drone-hugging leader of the "free world". Besides when did zionism & justice go together? The world could be blessed with one & only one Edward Said but it sure could do with a million more. Thanks for the vid!

@BerlinerOmar In his books, he focussed mainly on European Orientalism; only a few chapters were concerned with American orientalist representations. Orientalism reached its apogee during the colonial period from 1600-1945; then the process of decolonization changed the landscape, sometimes for the better, not always.

I prefer Edward Said as a formidable and perceptive music critic. In that field he was purely motivated by enthusiasm & free of the bitterness and resentment towards the West that characterised his other work.

I actually admire Said's work. Both scholars and laics knowing his work are torn apart wheter to dismiss him as a "butthurt (which he is) or adore his clever observations (which his work is undoubtedly full of). My view of his persona omits neither: yes, he is, indeed, full of shit and his rampant antiamericanism and antiisrealism (I refuse to use the term "antiemitism", as it would warp both the context and target of his hate) often prevents him from attempts to look at the situation objectively, but on the other hand he often has a point and brings something new to the discussion. I would say he's Karl Marx of modern era; controversial, yes, and also often misled, but great in that he brought new point of view to the discussion on his chosen topic.

Whao... ... Edward Said really hates the American government dude.... haha... On a literary note, he is only focusing on American Orientalism. Those who know Ideological criticism might wanna use this critical technique to consider what he just said.

Orientalism is about Said personally, his own feelings of lack of self worth, perceiving himself as powerless victim,etc. He then projects these feelings on Arabs. This is what I resent. The world would be a better place if Said had gotten psychotherapy to understand himself instead of writing his pitiful book.
@tmuna23

Instead of attacking Said, you would do better to discuss the specific ways in which you disagree with his work. In my opinion, Said did not offer a vision of "the Orient" as victims. Actually, he often places blame squarely on Oriental leaders. He might argue that some of the "victims" in this scenario are the general Western public that endure the misrepresentation of the Orient by power brokers who perpetuate selfish goals. His ultimate hope was to elevate the dialogue about the Middle East and the Orient in order to reveal deeper truths. There is no way to solve complex problems without fully understanding the reality in which they are grounded.

tmuna23 Thank you for confirmation that you do not know the motivation and reasons for Saids Orientalist absurdities. I attacked Said because his motivations were as much a problem as his now debunked ideas. Read Defending the West by Ibn Warraq for a systematic PARAGRAPH by PARAGRAPH refutation and destruction of Saids bullsh %t. An apologetic response is all too typical of the pandering empathy that is counter-productive when dealing with delusional belief.

jonnsmith180 In this video, Said reveals his motivations. He says, "I've called what I try to do humanism...Humanism is the only, and I would go so far as to say, the final resistance we have against the inhuman practices and injustices that disfigure human history." (27min) Critique him as you wish, but I believe his writing and teaching forwarded that noble goal.
@jonnsmith180

tmuna23 If you are relying solely upon this video to discern Saids motivations then I can understand some confusion. Long after Said wrote @ Orientalism and the refutations started debunking his position(s) he embraced the idea of "humanism" to save his arse eputation. Respectfully, you do not seem to know much about Said. Thinking apologetics is noble? As stated, read Defending the West by Ibn Warraq and then return and try to support your misconceptions and incorrect belief @ Said.
